A dynamic four-day golf camp was held at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) campus in Princess Anne, MD, June 28-July 1. There, the Hollywood Golf Institute from Detroit, MI, left a lasting impact on the aspiring golfers in attendance. Co-hosted by PGA PGM Alum Jamila Johnson and Athletic Director Executive Assistant Marshall Cropper, the camp provided a valuable opportunity for youngsters to learn the fundamentals of the game while receiving guidance from knowledgeable golf professionals.
Jamila, a dedicated DEI Golf Advocate and Community Enthusiast who serves on the Executive Board as Secretary for the Black College Golf Coaches Association, was joined at the camp by fellow PGA PGM Alum Jon Seward, PGA and Blair Waters, PGA as part of workshops. The camp, which garnered praise from participants and organizers alike, aimed to empower young golfers and foster a love for the sport.
Under the guidance of Head Coach Tiana Jones, PGA, who is also an alum of the PGA PGM program, the camp offered a well-rounded learning experience for the enthusiastic youngsters. The agenda included training on the campus driving range, short game practice, workshops on college admissions, NCAA eligibility, and Black golf history, including a viewing of the award-winning documentary “Uneven Fairways.”
“The campers were thrilled to receive instruction from these experienced golf professionals, who imparted their knowledge and expertise with passion and enthusiasm,” said Jamila.
Throughout the camp, the young golfers were immersed in a comprehensive curriculum that covered the essential aspects of the game. From grip and stance to swing mechanics and course management, the campers received a solid foundation upon which to build their golfing skills.
Jamila, in a heartfelt message on her Facebook page, expressed her gratitude for the Hollywood Golf Institute’s participation in the event and acknowledged their instrumental role in transforming the game, one golfer at a time. The Hollywood Golf Institute, a non-profit organization that introduces youth to the sport, was founded in 1980 in Detroit, MI, by Jamila’s mom, Selina Johnson.

With personalized attention and a nurturing environment, the camp fostered an atmosphere of growth and learning.
