Netflix is about to venture into live sports streaming with the inaugural “Netflix Cup” golf tournament, taking inspiration from Warner Bros. Discovery and marking a new chapter for the streaming platform. The event will bring together stars from two of Netflix’s major sports series, “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” and “Full Swing,” in an exciting golf competition.
In a unique blend of wheels and irons, Formula 1 drivers and golfers will team up to compete at the prestigious Wynn Golf Club in Wynn Las Vegas. The Netflix Cup is scheduled to stream live starting from November 14. The competition will consist of four pairs, each comprising a Formula 1 driver and a PGA Tour professional, engaging in an eight-hole match. The top two teams will battle it out on the final hole for the chance to claim the inaugural Netflix Cup title.
Gabe Spitzer, Netflix’s Vice President of Nonfiction Sports, expressed the platform’s enthusiasm for how their sports series have garnered increased interest in sports leagues and competitions worldwide. The Netflix Cup represents a significant step forward in this endeavor by featuring global stars from their popular shows in a live sports event.
This concept isn’t entirely new, with Warner Bros. Discovery’s “The Match,” where top NFL players and golfers participate, having gained significant attention.
Norb Gambuzza, PGA TOUR Senior Vice President, Media and Gaming, highlighted the PGA TOUR’s pride in participating in this milestone for Netflix. They are excited to showcase their professional athletes to a global live audience, with the belief that diverse audiences have gained a deeper understanding of both golf and Formula 1 through “Full Swing” and “Drive to Survive.” The partnership between Netflix, Formula 1, and the Las Vegas Grand Prix promises an exciting and innovative concept for sports enthusiasts.
