Michael Anthony Tatmon Brings THURGOOD to Theatre Row for One Night Only

Award-winning solo play launches the Equal Justice Tour with a special performance celebrating the life and legacy of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

New York City will welcome an important chapter in American civil rights history when acclaimed actor and producer Michael Anthony Tatmon takes the stage as legendary Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in THURGOOD, George Stevens Jr.’s award-winning solo play. The production will appear for one night only at Theatre Row on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at 7 p.m., as part of the United Solo Theatre Festival.

Presented by In Living Colored and directed by Dr. Prodan Dimov, the performance will launch the THURGOOD Equal Justice Tour, an initiative designed to bring the story of Marshall’s remarkable life and contributions to audiences through theater, education and community engagement.

Located at Theatre Row, 410 West 42nd Street in Manhattan, the production offers audiences an opportunity to experience an intimate theatrical portrait of one of the most consequential figures in American legal history. Tickets are $65 and are available through the Theatre Row ticketing website.

THURGOOD traces Marshall’s journey from his early years as a determined civil rights attorney to his historic appointment as the first African American justice of the United States Supreme Court. Through a solo performance, the play explores his courage, intelligence, humor and determination to challenge racial segregation and advance equal protection under the law.

Marshall’s legal career helped reshape American society, most notably through his work challenging segregation in public education. His legacy continues to influence discussions about civil rights, democracy and equal justice.

For Tatmon, bringing this story to the stage represents an opportunity to connect historical events with contemporary questions about fairness, leadership and civic responsibility.

“Justice is not simply a chapter in our history—it is a responsibility we inherit,” said Tatmon. “Through the life of Thurgood Marshall, we invite audiences to remember where we’ve been, understand where we are, and imagine where we can go together.”

Dimov, founding artistic director of Metropolis Theater, leads the production. An actor, director and educator with professional experience in Bulgaria, Russia and the United States, he brings an international perspective to the staging of Marshall’s story.

“Great theater has the power to transform hearts, expand minds, and unite communities,” said Dimov. “Every production is an opportunity to discover our shared humanity.”

The production also carries the distinction of being written by George Stevens Jr., whose extensive career in film, television and theater includes the creation and production of major cultural programming. Stevens has received numerous honors, including 17 Emmy Awards and two Peabody Awards.

Tatmon brings substantial stage experience to the title role. His previous performances include Shakespeare’s Othello, Goethe’s Faust, August Wilson’s Fences and the theatrical work Hush: Composing Blind Tom. As founder and producing artistic director of In Living Colored, he has made storytelling a central part of his work to advance education, cultural understanding and social change.

The Equal Justice Tour will extend beyond the stage through the newly established Thurgood Initiative. Planned educational partnerships, workshops, post-performance conversations and civic engagement activities will encourage audiences to explore civil rights history and consider how Marshall’s legacy relates to their own communities.

The initiative reflects In Living Colored’s broader mission of bringing Black history from the page to the stage while creating opportunities for dialogue, empathy and collective healing. The organization develops multicultural stories through theater, film, digital media and community experiences.

With its Theatre Row engagement, THURGOOD invites audiences to revisit a defining chapter in American history while considering the continuing responsibility to protect equal justice.

The performance runs approximately 90 minutes. Tickets are available at Theatre Row, or through the United Solo Theatre Festival website at unitedsolo.org.
