The Sifford Scholarship Fund was established in 2022 in honor of the legendary and trailblazing Dr. Charles “Charlie” L. Sifford – the first Black golfer to earn a PGA TOUR card in 1961. The Sifford Scholarship was created to help fund college costs for students who attend a Historically Black College or University and minority students focusing their education on a golf management program.
In 2022, the world celebrated the hundredth anniversary of Dr. Charles L Sifford’s birth with various events held in his honor throughout the year. Notably, the 2022 Travelers Championship in Hartford, CT spearheaded efforts to raise funds for the Dr. Charles L Sifford Scholarship Fund, inspired by his historic victory on the PGA Tour in Hartford back in 1967. Continuing to honor his remarkable legacy, the third annual Sifford golf tournament will be organized to generate further support for Sifford Scholarships. Sifford passed away on February 3, 2015 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Born on June 2, 1922, in Charlotte, NC, Dr. Charlie Sifford made history as the first African American golfer to compete on the PGA Tour in 1961. His pivotal role in challenging the PGA’s exclusionary membership policies from 1934 to 1961 paved the way for greater inclusivity in the sport. To carry forward his vision, the Foundation will collaborate with community organizations sharing Sifford’s passion for introducing youth to golf and promoting financial literacy, two causes close to his heart.
The Travelers Championship, in partnership with Skins and Pins Golf Club, are the inaugural sponsors of the Sifford Scholarship Fund. The Cobbs Creek Foundation serves as the fiscal sponsor for the Fund. Cobbs Creek golf course in Philadelphia was Dr. Sifford’s home course. The Scholarship aims to support deserving individuals in pursuing their educational aspirations. Meanwhile, the Grant program, facilitated by the Cleveland Foundation in collaboration with the Sifford estate, seeks to empower initiatives aligned with Dr. Sifford’s values.
