FROM THE DESK OF THE PUBLISHER
DEBERT COOK, CMP
Dear Family and Friends of the African American Golfer’s Digest,
I am deeply honored and humbled to share with each of you that, on September 13, 2025, I will be inducted into the National Black Golf Hall of Fame—an institution dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich history, contributions, and achievements of African Americans in the game of golf.
Founded in 1986 by the late Harold Dunovant, the first African American to graduate from the PGA’s business school, the Hall of Fame has recognized pioneers, trailblazers, and advocates who have paved the way for greater diversity and inclusion in the sport we love. Today, under the leadership of his son, Jeff Dunovant—Chairman and President, and a PGA member since 1993—the Hall continues this mission. Jeff and his father hold the distinction of being the first and only Black father-and-son PGA members, as well as the first and only Black father-and-son “Quarter Century Members” of the PGA.
For me, this recognition is both a personal milestone and a tribute to those who have inspired, mentored, and supported me along my 22-year journey in publishing the African American Golfer’s Digest. I am also proud to share this honor with my fellow 2025 inductees: Dr. Michael Cooper, the late Carrie Russell, and the historic Shady Rest Country Club.
I warmly invite each of you to join me at the Sonesta Gwinnett in Duluth, Georgia, near Atlanta, for the 39th Anniversary Induction Celebration Weekend. You are also welcomed to purchase your ticket and to consider placing a congratulatory advertisement in the souvenir journal and to playing in the golf classic. View the full schedule HERE.
I hope you will come, celebrate with me during this unforgettable celebration of history, legacy, and golf.
