FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(New York, NY) — The National Black Golf Hall of Fame ceremoniously inducted Debert Cook, founder and publisher of African American Golfer’s Digest (AAGD) during its 39th annual anniversary, marking a historic evening celebrating legacy, leadership, and champions in golf. The event, held on Saturday, September 13, at the Sonesta Gwinnett in Duluth, Georgia, near Atlanta, honored Ms. Cook whose contributions to the game—on and off the course—have uplifted communities, strengthened representation, and advanced the visibility of Black golf.
Ms. Cook’s decades of advocacy, media work, and leadership in the golf community sat humbly at the evening’s event where reflections recognized not merely her personal achievement but a life spent amplifying voices, preserving narratives, and opening doors for others in the sport.
From the podium Cook shared her speech and comments, saying, “I never imagined that I would be standing here tonight, and I’m still pinching myself to believe it’s real. The outpouring of love and appreciation is truly overwhelming. I am deeply grateful to my family, my editorial team, organizations, advertisers, and everyone who has supported me and walked with me on this incredible journey. This has not been a one woman show —It truly takes a village.”
“This recognition represents not only a deeply meaningful personal milestone but also a tribute to all those who have inspired, mentored, and aided me in this 22-year journey publishing the African American Golfer’s Digest. I am equally proud to share this honor with my fellow 2025 inductees — Dr. Michael Cooper, the late Carrie Russell, and the historic Shady Rest Country Club,” said Ms. Cook.
The evening’s program embraced a rich mix of speeches, tributes, awards, and memorable moments. Guests gathered in dignified celebration, many reflecting on Cook’s journey and the broader mission embodied by the National Black Golf Hall of Fame and African American Golfer’s Digest. A very personalized video tribute showed highlights of Ms. Cook’s life journey followed by a compelling introduction by AAGD Executive Editor, James Beatty, who shared how Cook’s work has inspired younger generations, highlighted unsung stories of Black golfers, and advanced greater equity in coverage and recognition across golf media.
African American Golfer’s Digest began publishing in 2003 and rose in esteem as a pillar within the Black golf community under Cook’s leadership. The magazine’s consistent coverage of tournaments, profiles of minority golfers, industry commentary, and archival features had long filled a gap left by mainstream outlets. Under her stewardship, it became a platform not only for reporting but for mentorship, community building, and preserving the heritage of Black excellence in golf. During the induction ceremony, many speakers emphasized that the magazine’s reach and influence have inspired readers to see themselves in the game and aspire to new possibilities.
Debert Cook often faced challenges—pushing for inclusion in the sport’s coverage, advocating for representation, and sustaining a specialized publication in a competitive media landscape. Her perseverance combined with a steadfast belief in golf’s potential to serve as a vehicle for empowerment and pride. At the ceremony, she was lauded for her bold vision, infectious enthusiasm, and impact as a connector in the golf world.

The other three inductees for the NBGHOF Class of 2025 were celebrated for their own extraordinary legacies—leaders, athletes, contributors whose life works further enriched the African American golf narrative. Ashaunta Epps, Founder & CEO, A Perfect Swing, Inc.., introduced Robin Gibbs, the daughter of inductee the late Ms. Carrie Russell LPGA, the LPGA’s First Black Master Professional. Damon Hack, evening emcee, introduced Chairperson Tom Donatelli who accepted the honor on behalf of Shady Rest Country Club alongside former chairperson Sylvia Hicks, who played a critical role in leading the organization’s early preservation efforts. Kennie Sims, PGA, introduced inductee Dr. Michael Cooper, Senior Advisor for HBCU Initiatives at the USGA. Each induction extended the Hall’s commitment to honoring diverse contributions and telling fuller, truer stories of the sport’s community.
The evening’s program began with a beautiful reading of the poem “Make Some Noise” by NBGHF Archivist Valada Parker Flewellyn, setting a tone of celebration and reflection. Emcee Damon Hack, Studio Host and Reporter for NBC Sports and Golf Channel, gave the welcome and kept the audience engaged and energized as the event unfolded. followed by NBGHOF Chairman Jeff Dunovant’s remarks on the occasion and purpose of the gathering, along with a heartfelt tribute to the late champion golfer Jim Dent and philanthropist Tom Cousins.
Host Committee member Steve Richards, Esq., of Coca-Cola, extended a warm welcome to attendees, while Rufus Lewis (NBGHOF Class of 1995) recognized Hall of Fame members in attendance. The celebration continued with soulful entertainment from stylist and performer “Londee The Artist,” and silent auction, all complemented by an elegant dinner and fine wine. Kerry Stewart, Executive Director of the Atlanta Fulton County Recreational Authority, shared exciting updates about the improvements at the new John A. White facility, highlighting continued growth and investment in the community.
The highlight of the night was the official induction of the honorees, led by Jeff Dunovant, PGA and his lovely wife Marie Dunovant (Chief Financial Officer, NBGHOF and Sydmar Realty) who offered a champagne toast in their honor, marking the culmination of an inspiring evening. The program, seamlessly executed by John R. Simpson of NBGHF Marketing & Membership, Sydni Dunovant and her team of dedicated volunteers, webmaster Warren Nichols of Warren 360media, event design by Brian and Marla Dunovant, Video archives by EyeSeeImaegs, concluded with a heartfelt benediction by Brian Dunovant, son of NBGHOF Founder Harold Dunovant, closing the night on a note of gratitude, pride, and celebration.

As the 39th anniversary concluded, attendees departed inspired by the evening’s reminders: that history matters, that recognition holds power, and that champions come not just from scorecards but through dedication to others, visibility, and service. Through the National Black Golf Hall of Fame and voices like Debert Cook’s, the next generation will continue that legacy—guided by mentorship, representation, and the conviction that golf belongs to everyone.
The NBGHOF 39th Anniversary Induction Ceremony Weekend also included a VIP welcome reception on Friday, September 12 and a charity golf tournament in honor of NBGHF founder Harold Dunovant at Bear’s Best Golf Course in Suwanee, Georgia, on Sunday, September 14.
