Minister Abdul Akbar Muhammad, an esteemed leader, mentor, and international representative of the Nation of Islam (NOI), passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026, at the age of 83. His life was marked by unwavering devotion to faith, deep commitment to service, and a heartfelt dedication to uplifting his community.

Born Lawrence James Prescott Jr. on June 9, 1942, in Hampton, Virginia, Akbar Muhammad embraced the teachings of the NOI at a young age and devoted his life to spiritual leadership and community building. Over decades of service, he became one of the most trusted and influential figures within the Nation, known for his profound wisdom, gentle spirit, and tireless efforts in spreading the message of righteousness and justice. 

Throughout his remarkable journey, Minister Akbar Muhammad served as the International Representative of the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, traveling to more than 150 countries and forging meaningful relationships with leaders, educators, and communities across the globe. His work took him to Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and beyond, where he fostered dialogue, mutual respect, and understanding in the spirit of peace and unity. 

Known affectionately by many simply as “Bro. Akbar,” he was instrumental in major organizational initiatives, including planning peace missions, World Friendship Tours, and international events that brought people together across cultures and borders. He opened the Nation’s first mission in Ghana, at the invitation of former President Jerry John Rawlings, and organized the first Saviours’ Day Convention held outside the United States in Accra, where thousands gathered in fellowship and faith. 

Minister Farrakhan described Akbar Muhammad as his “most faithful helper and most loving brother,” a testament to the deep bond they shared and the indispensable role he played in the Nation’s work. Through decades of loyal service, Brother Akbar became not only a leader but a cherished mentor and friend to countless believers and colleagues.

Beyond his public achievements, Minister Akbar Muhammad was beloved by his family, friends, and the many who knew him personally. His life was celebrated at a heartfelt janazah (funeral) service held on March 27, 2026, at Mosque Maryam in Chicago, where hundreds gathered to honor his legacy, share reflections, and give thanks for a life lived in service to Allah and humanity.  “We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return,” reads a verse from Surah (chapter) 2, Ayat (verse) 156 from the Holy Qur’an in his family’s statement announcing his passing.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, leadership, and lasting contributions to the Nation of Islam and communities around the world. His memory will continue to inspire all who were touched by his compassion, faith, and steadfast commitment to justice.

Minister Abdul Akbar Muhammad was interred on March 29, 2026, in his beloved hometown of Hampton, Virginia. May his soul rest in peace and his legacy endure in the hearts of many. Read more in The Final Call newspaper.
