Her Shot Girls Inspired by Unforgettable Experience at Augusta National Women’s Amateur

by AAGD Staff

During the week of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, the young golfers of Her Shot Golf experienced a life-changing opportunity—one that will undoubtedly remain with them for years to come.

Founded by Bria Janelle, Her Shot is a leadership and youth development program that empowers young people ages 11 to 18 to navigate education, workforce pathways, and long-term independence. Through the game of golf, participants build confidence, discipline, leadership skills, and real-world readiness both on and off the course.

The organization brought a group of high school golfers to one of the most prestigious events in women’s amateur golf, where they witnessed excellence at the highest level. Walking the storied grounds of Augusta National Golf Club, the girls were immersed in an environment rich with history, tradition, and possibility.

For many, the visit represented far more than a day at a golf tournament. It was an opportunity for inspiration, exposure, and belief. Watching the world’s best women amateur golfers compete on one of golf’s grandest stages allowed them to envision what might be possible in their own futures.

Making History At Augusta National

One of the most memorable highlights of the visit was spending time with Condoleezza Rice. Her presence served as a profound example of leadership, perseverance, and barrier-breaking achievement. The young golfers listened intently, asked thoughtful questions, and left the encounter with a renewed sense of confidence and purpose.

The group also had the opportunity to follow Emily Odwin, the standout golfer from Southern Methodist University. Watching her compete at such a high level offered a powerful glimpse into the future of women’s golf. Meeting Odwin in person, receiving her autograph, and sharing a moment with her made the dream of competing on a stage like Augusta feel all the more attainable.

In an especially exciting turn, the Her Shot girls became part of the tournament’s story themselves. Their enthusiasm, camaraderie, and unmistakable sisterhood caught the attention of event organizers, earning them a featured spot on the Augusta National Women’s Amateur social media platforms. It was a proud and affirming moment—one that underscored their rightful place in golf’s most celebrated spaces.

The foundation of Her Shot is deeply rooted in the legacy of Bria Janelle’s grandfather, Ron Townsend, a trailblazer whose remarkable career began in the mailroom and advanced through discipline, perseverance, and merit to the presidency of Gannett Television. In 1990, Townsend made history as the first African American member of Augusta National Golf Club. His extraordinary journey embodies the values at the heart of Her Shot: accountability, work ethic, opportunity, and upward mobility.

At Her Shot Golf, the philosophy is simple: exposure changes trajectory. Experiences like this expand horizons, build confidence, and help young women recognize the opportunities available to them both on and off the golf course. Golf becomes more than a game; it becomes a vehicle for leadership, discipline, relationship-building, and lifelong opportunity.

This unforgettable day at Augusta reinforced Her Shot Golf’s mission to develop confident, prepared young women ready to step into spaces they may once have only imagined. Thanks to the support of parents, donors, and community partners, these girls are gaining access to transformative experiences that will shape their futures.

It was more than a visit to Augusta National. It was a powerful reminder of what can happen when young women are given a shot.
