Jeff Burns Jr.: A Champion of Black Media and Howard University

Jeff Burns Jr., a respected media executive, mentor, and proud alumnus of Howard University, passed away in May 2026 at the age of 75. Throughout his distinguished career, Burns played a pivotal role in the success and growth of EBONY magazine, helping to strengthen one of the most influential voices in Black media.  

Born into a family that valued education, service, and community, Burns carried those principles throughout his life. After graduating from Howard University, he embarked on a career in publishing and advertising that would span decades. His professional home became EBONY magazine and the historic Johnson Publishing Company, where he rose to serve as Senior Vice President of Advertising and Associate Publisher. Colleagues credited him with helping to expand advertising partnerships and elevate the magazine’s influence among both corporate America and Black consumers.  

Known for his professionalism, creativity, and relationship-building skills, Burns was admired throughout the publishing industry. Former colleagues described him as an innovative leader who helped move EBONY forward during a transformative period in media. Beyond his business accomplishments, he was deeply committed to mentoring young professionals and opening doors for future generations of Black talent.  

Burns remained a devoted supporter of Howard University throughout his life. He championed the institution’s mission, cultivated alumni engagement, and proudly represented the values of excellence and service associated with the university. Friends and associates often noted that his dedication to Howard was matched only by his passion for preserving and advancing Black-owned media.  

His legacy lives on through the countless colleagues, students, friends, and family members whose lives he touched. Jeff Burns Jr. will be remembered not only as a successful publishing executive, but as a gracious mentor, a devoted advocate for Black journalism, and a man whose work helped ensure that Black stories were told with dignity, authenticity, and pride.  

 A Celebration of Life for Jeff Burns Jr. was held on May 28, 2026, at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn, New York, with a viewing at 9:30 a.m. and the funeral service at 10:00 a.m.
