As I Move Forward In 2012…

In January, I made an executive decision to join The Tee Divas & Tee Dudes an outstanding and well organized golf club that was formed in 1996. The founder and current president is Ms. Doris LaCour. Currently, the club has a total active membership of 83 members–85% of the members are women and l5% are men. Their website address is www.teedivas-dudesgolf.com The club motto is: To look good,to play well, to have fun.

In February, I arrived early to my first meeting as a club member because I thought I would not know one person out of the 83 members other than Doris LaCour. I collected my hand-outs, found a seat in the back corner, and began to absorbed myself in reading the hand-outs.

The meeting began with Doris LaCour conducting the club’s business. After this was finished, she introduced the new members (which included me) the club’s officers, and committee chairs. She then verbally recognized, congratulated, and complimented the accomplishments of golfers in their respective competitions for a job well done.

By this time the meeting was about half over, so the president called for a refreshment break to eat, drink, and socialize. At this point, I gathered my courage (as a new member) stood up, focused my eyes and ventured forward to the refreshment table.

It was then that I realized I either knew or recognized some of the members–a few I had known personally for years–and the others knew of me through either the Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) Charlie Sifford Hall Of Fame Luncheon that I attended a few months ago, and/or from my blogs on The African American Golfers Digest. I was welcomed and received warmly by the membership body and subsequently invited to join them for a 3 par at Maggie Hathaway’s golf course.

I found my first club meeting as a “Tee Diva” to be very organized, well attended and the membership body ripe with positive vibes. The meeting was extremely informative and afforded me a wealth of information about exciting golf tournaments, golf outings-both large and small-that are available for the membership’s participation, with an emphasis on encouraging women and men to develop their skills and become more active in golf sports.

One of my many activities that I am looking forward to is participating in the Tee Divas-Dudes players’ Development Program that is scheduled for April 2012.

The Tee Diva and Tee Dudes Golf Club, is also busy making plans to travel to South Africa in December 2012 for golf and sightseeing in Johannesburg, Sun City and Cape Town, with a side-trip to Egypt. Reservations are still available. For more information contact Doris LaCour, President (323) 290-2122 email ms.gdiva@yahoo.com

A LITTLE HUMOR–
GOLF AND WHAT IT ALL MEANS

Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle, followed by a good bottle of beer.

A ‘gimme’ can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers …neither of whom can putt very well.

An interesting thing about Golf is that no matter how badly you play, it is always possible to get worse.

If your best shots are the practice swing and the ‘gimme putt’, you might wish to reconsider this game.

Golf is like marriage, If you take yourself too seriously it won’t work, and both are expensive.

Until next time,

Barbara Taylor

ABOUT BARBARA TAYLOR
In April 2011, after taking a six-year hiatus from golf lessons, Taylor decided to return to the world of Golf. When she first took lessons, she found that the transition from playing a “B” level of tennis to learning to play golf was boring, and slow as hell, and as perilous as going over Niagara Falls without a barrel. So, she made a decision (that she thought was wise at the time) to give it up! Taylor’s returned to the game came with a whole new prospective, purpose, respect, and attitude…. And, yes maturity.

Unlike when she was playing tennis, Taylor had no desire to get caught-up in the competitive frenzy. She is into golf for the shear love of the fun, travel and social interactions that she has found so delightful in the golf environment and game. However, she does want to be taken seriously.

Taylor is currently being coached by the legendary Alton Duhon, at the renown Chester Washington Golf Course, in Los Angeles. The course is also the California Golf Home of Dr. Charles Sifford.
