Augusta National Golf Club has announced three changes to its qualification criteria for the 2024 Masters tournament. The first change is the addition of an automatic invitation for the NCAA Division I individual men’s champion. This change comes after Vanderbilt sophomore Gordon Sargent, who won the championship last May, was invited to this year’s Masters.

The second change is that players who qualify and are eligible for the previous year’s season-ending Tour Championship will also be invited to the 2024 Masters. This change aims to close a potential loophole for players who may have qualified for the Tour Championship but then defected to other golf organizations.

Lastly, Augusta National confirmed that winners of full-point PGA Tour events in the fall will also receive invitations to the Masters. Augusta National will continue to rely on the top 50 in the world ranking as a criteria for qualification, which may limit the number of players from rival golf organizations who participate in the Masters.

Augusta National is also considering other pathways for qualification from other world tours to ensure that the Masters field is representative of the best players in the world. Masters chairman Fred Ridley expressed confidence in the Official World Golf Ranking as a good system for inviting players based on data-driven analytics that are consistently applied.

Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley said, “Our conclusion for the time being is that the Official World Golf Ranking, it’s a really good way to invite players,” he said. “It’s an objective criteria based on data-driven analytics, and it’s consistently applied. I think most would agree it’s a good system.”
