The Get In The Game Sports Business Career Conference, hosted by SBRnet and First and Pen, is excited to announce its featured session, “The State of HBCU Athletics,” led by the HBCU conference commissioners from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC).
“We are thrilled to have four of the leaders in HBCU athletics on our featured session at the first annual Get In The Game Sports Business Career Conference,” said First and Pen CEO Yussuf Khan. “Who better to discuss the state of HBCU athletics than these brilliant executives who are shaping and leading the direction for these storied conferences and institutions in a rapidly evolving sports media landscape.”
The highly anticipated “State of HBCU Athletics” will be the featured session taking place on Saturday, October 7th at the Sheraton Inner Harbor in Baltimore, the host venue for the event.
The excitement of coming together and discussing the business and future of HBCU sports is echoed by all the commissioners.
“It is a pleasure to participate in the ‘Get In the Game Sports Business Career Conference’ with my Historically Black College and University colleagues in the great city of Baltimore,” said CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams Parker. “I appreciate Yussuf Khan and the team’s efforts in bringing us together as industry leaders in college athletics to continue to advance the business of HBCU sports and provide continued exposure collectively.”
“I am so excited to participate on this panel to share my experiences and contribute to creating opportunities to feed the pipeline of diversity into the sports industry, particularly in athletic administration,” said MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills.
“I’m excited to participate in the ‘Get in the Game Sports Business Career Conference’ as this is a unique opportunity for students to engage leaders and industry professionals who work at the intersection of sports and business,” said SIAC Commissioner Dr. Anthony Holloman.
“I am honored to be part of Get in the Game and have the opportunity to share with young professionals,” said GCAC Commissioner Dr. Kiki Baker Barnes. “This conference is in direct alignment with the mission of my organization, ‘So You Want a Career in Athletics™,’ I encourage anyone interested in athletics to attend this conference and learn more from the best in the industry. Thank you Yussuf for the opportunity.”
SBRnet co-owner Mark Sullivan was equally thrilled to have the distinguished commissioners lead the featured discussion at the first-year event.
“We didn’t think we would have the incredible opportunity of having these four amazing executives together at our inaugural event, so we are truly honored that the commissioners agreed to take the time and come together for our featured session to discuss the state of HBCU athletics,” said Sullivan.
“The State of HBCU Athletics” takes place at the inaugural Get In The Game Sports Business Career Conference on Saturday, October 7th and will also be streamed live on First and Pen (firstandpen.com).
Get In The Game is a sports business career conference designed to educate HBCU students and students of color about the sports business industry and the career pathways within it. The three-day event takes place October 6th – 8th at the Sheraton Inner Harbor in Baltimore, MD.
Stamped From the Beginning, Documentary Movie to Release on Netflix
Oscar-winning director Roger Ross Williams brings Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s best-selling book Stamped From the Beginning to life, using vivid animations and leading female scholars to explore the history of anti-Black racist idea.
Netflix announced its partnership with renowned and sometimes controversial professor Dr. Ibram X. Kendi in January 2021 to produce two documentaries and an animated series based on his bestselling books. One of the documentaries, Stamped from the Beginning, will be released on Netflix in 2023.
Stamped From The Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America
Some Americans insist that we’re living in a post-racial society. But racist thought is not just alive and well in America — it is more sophisticated and more insidious than ever. And as award-winning historian Ibram X. Kendi argues, racist ideas have a long and lingering history, one in which nearly every great American thinker is complicit.
In this deeply researched and fast-moving narrative, Kendi chronicles the entire story of anti-black racist ideas and their staggering power over the course of American history. He uses the life stories of five major American intellectuals to drive this history: Puritan minister Cotton Mather, Thomas Jefferson, abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, W.E.B. Du Bois, and legendary activist Angela Davis.
As Kendi shows, racist ideas did not arise from ignorance or hatred. They were created to justify and rationalize deeply entrenched racist policies and the nation’s racial inequities.
In shedding light on this history, Stamped from the Beginning offers us the tools we need to expose racist thinking. In the process, he gives us reason to hope.

MARCUS BYRD WINS 4TH APGA TOUR EVENT OF SEASON WITH STRONG PERFORMANCE AT VALHALLA

Scores- https://www.golfgenius.com/pages/9402137369693417988
Louisville, KY. (July 25, 2023) – Marcus Byrd captured his APGA Tour-record fourth tournament title in a single season Tuesday, firing a four-under par 67 to win APGA at Valhalla Golf Club and continue a year to remember.
His two-day performance of 67-67-134 was good for a three-stroke victory over Ryan Ellerbrock, who is in his first year on the APGA Tour. Quinn Riley of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Rovonta Young of Huntsville, Alabama, finished another stroke back in a tie for third place at 138.
The 26-year-old from Temple Hill, Maryland (suburban Washington D.C.) took control on the front nine with consecutive birdies on holes four through seven. He then birdied three of the first four holes on the back to give himself some breathing room. A double bogey on 17 reduced his margin to two strokes but he eagled 18 to punctuate the win and extend his lead in the Lexus Cup Point Standings.
“First time I looked at the leaderboard was after that double bogey on 17,” said Byrd.

whose high-quality play earned him four PGA TOUR starts via exemption earlier this year. “I knew I had to hit a good drive on 18 and I did.” His second shot on the 529-yard, par 5 hole was a four-iron from 226 and Byrd hit the green, leaving a 35-foot putt for eagle. “I was relaxed. It felt good when I stood over it and it was good to see it go in.”
Byrd’s whirlwind 2023 season started with a win on national TV at the APGA Tour Farmers Insurance Invitational at Torrey Pines in January. He then played the PGA TOUR’s Genesis Invitational and Honda Classic in February before winning APGA Florida in March. The PGA TOUR’S Wells Fargo Championship exemption came next in early May, followed by his win at APGA at TPC Deere Run later in the month. He returned to PGA TOUR competition at TPC Deere Run for the John Deere Classic in early July and now adds the APGA Tour Valhalla victory to his resume along with the first place prize of $7,500 from the $25,000 purse.
“The last six months have been incredible, but it’s been non-stop. I feel like I’ve gotten these opportunities and haven’t performed the way I wanted,” Byrd stated in reference to the four missed cuts on the PGA TOUR. “I took some time off after the John Deere Classic and it’s really helped with this win today. My goals now are Korn Ferry Tour Q-School in the fall and to win the APGA Tour Lexus Cup Point Standings.”
His fourth APGA Tour victory in a single season exceeds the mark of former APGA Tour stars Willie Mack III and Tim O’Neal, each of whom had three-win seasons as the tour was growing in recent years. Mack is now a fulltime player on the Korn Ferry Tour and O’Neal has full status on PGA TOUR Champions. Both secured their slots with top-five performances at the respective Q-Schools this past fall.
Byrd will continue to pursue his APGA Tour Player of the Year goal when competition continues with the APGA Two-Man Classic at TPC Louisiana in New Orleans July 30-August 1. The APGA Ascension Classic in St. Louis follows on August 8-10 at Glen Echo Country Club. The regular season then culminates with the Mastercard APGA Tour Championship at TPC Sugarloaf in suburban Atlanta August 13-15.
One Year Away — Leading Golf Stars Ready to Shine at Paris 2024 Olympic Golf Games
In the coming summer, the world’s finest golfers, 60 men and 60 women, will converge at Le Golf National’s Albatros Course for the highly anticipated Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Located just southwest of Paris and a stone’s throw away from the grand Palace of Versailles, Le Golf National is no stranger to global competitions, having hosted the prestigious 2018 Ryder Cup and the DP World Tour’s Open de France on 28 occasions. Golf’s return to the Olympics in 2016 marked a significant milestone after an absence of 112 years, and the upcoming event will only be the fifth set of medals awarded to men and the fourth to women.
The excitement surrounding the event hints at potential historic moments that could unfold during the two-week span in August 2024. One such prospect is New Zealand’s Lydia Ko, who, if all goes well with the Olympic Golf Ranking over the next year, will have the chance to secure a medal in her third consecutive Olympics. In 2016, Ko clinched a silver medal at the Rio Olympics, finishing closely behind South Korea’s Inbee Park. Then, in the 2020 Games in Tokyo, she narrowly lost the silver medal playoff to Japan’s Mone Inami, both of them one shot behind Nelly Korda from the United States.
Ko, an accomplished 19-time winner on the LPGA Tour, has expressed her aspirations to play in Paris and complete her medal collection with a coveted gold. “Paris is probably going to be my last Olympics,” says the 26-year-old golfer. She recognizes the significance of potentially medaling in all three Olympics since the sport’s return to the Games after more than a century. Ko’s journey has been marked by remarkable achievements, becoming the youngest player to win an LPGA event at 15, claim a major title at 18, and reach the world No. 1 ranking at just 17.
The competition at Le Golf National’s Albatros Course, designed by Hubert Chesneau and Robert Von Hagge, is expected to be challenging. The men’s stroke-play event will be held from August 1st to 4th, 2024, followed by the women’s competition from August 7th to 10th.
Players qualify based on the Olympic Golf Rankings, derived from the Official World Golf Ranking. The top 15 men and top 15 women from around the globe earn eligibility to participate in the Games, with a cap of four players per country. After the top 15, each country can have a maximum of two eligible players who do not already have two or more players in the top 15.
At the moment, Lydia Ko ranks third behind Jin Young Ko of South Korea and Nelly Korda, the 2020 gold medalist, who is also seeking another shot at Olympic glory.
The Canadian women’s golf team would consist of Brooke Henderson and Maude-Aimee Leblanc, while the men’s team would be represented by Corey Conners and Nick Taylor based on current rankings.
In the men’s Olympic Golf Rankings, Scottie Scheffler, winner of the 2022 Masters Tournament and the 2023 PLAYERS Championship, leads the pack. It would be a debut Olympic appearance for Scheffler, and he could potentially be joined by fellow Americans Patrick Cantlay and Max Homa, both currently ranked in the top six.
Reigning gold medalist Xander Schauffele is well-positioned to represent the United States once again, with more than a year remaining for the teams to be finalized before the Games.
World No. 2 Jon Rahm, the reigning Masters champion, is also eager to make his Olympic debut in Paris after having to withdraw from the Tokyo Games due to a positive COVID test. Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, currently second in the Olympic Rankings, had a hard-fought battle for the bronze medal in Tokyo, eventually claimed by C.T. Pan of Chinese Taipei. Despite missing out, McIlroy’s Olympic experience has left a lasting impact, and he’s determined to strive for a medal in Paris.
The Olympic spirit has taken hold of the players, as they eagerly look forward to the unique experience and the opportunity to compete on the world’s stage for their countries. With historic potential, intense competition, and a prestigious venue, golf’s return to the Olympics promises to be an exhilarating spectacle and a showcase of athletic excellence.

Teeing up Equality: Girls Inc. of Long Island Launches Inclusive Golf Summer Program
BY RENEE FLAGLER
Executive Director, Girls Inc. of Long Island
In 2019, Debert Cook, CMP, then Publisher of African American Golfer’s Digest, told me she received calls from great universities seeking students of color for full-ride golf scholarships every year, and dozens of them went unfulfilled.
A few weeks later, a gentleman friend of Girls Inc. called to say he spent the morning golfing and networking. While enjoying lunch at the clubhouse, he learned that women weren’t allowed at the course.
Both instances helped us realize that lack of access prevented women and girls, especially girls of color, from the world, culture, and the benefits golf affords players. We at Girls Inc. did research, determined the benefits, and decided we needed to do more to expose our girls to the world of golf. It took four years, but we are ecstatic to launch our first-ever golf summer program funded by Bank of America and Suffolk County Youth Bureau.
This week our girls are not only learning to play golf (some of them seem to be naturals), but they are also gaining skills in effective communication, interpersonal skills, leadership, and relationship building. By the end of the week, they’ll golf nine holes while getting to know professional women who have volunteered to be part of their foursomes. And did I mention they are having so much fun?

The White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities has unveiled its ninth cohort of HBCU Scholars, acknowledging 102 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students from 29 different states and countries for their outstanding achievements in academics, leadership, and civic engagement, among other areas. Notably, the 2023 HBCU Scholars represent the largest cohort since the program’s inception in 2014 and encompass a record number of institutions, with the HBCU participation rate now surpassing 70 percent.
U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona praised the talented students, hailing them as exemplars of excellence and inclusion upheld by the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Cardona extended congratulations on behalf of the U.S. Department of Education and the Biden-Harris Administration, expressing gratitude for their dedication to serving their communities. He also commended the program’s expansion, providing promising young leaders with exciting professional development, networking, and educational opportunities.
“Congratulations to Maiya Lyn-Ah-Ping, who recently represented Girls on the Green Tee and attended the Aramco Team Series, Florida event and a private golf clinic with golf legend, Gary Player in West Palm Beach, Florida,” said Clemmie Perry, Founder of Girls On the Green Tee. “Maiya has also recently been announced as a United States White House HBCU Scholar and she has been selected as the Women of Color Golf-HBCU, FAMU College Ambassador for the 2023-2024 school.year.” WOCG will support Maiya on her new golf journey with golf lessons and a new set of starter clubs.”

Selected from a competitive pool of over 300 applicants, these HBCU Scholars are currently enrolled at 70 HBCUs across the nation. Throughout the academic year, they will act as ambassadors of the White House Initiative on HBCUs, the U.S. Department of Education, and their respective HBCUs. Their mission revolves around “Raising the Bar,” encouraging community upliftment, fostering student success, strengthening democracy, and promoting economic growth. To support their endeavors, HBCU Scholars will receive personal and professional development, cross-university networking, and a platform to address issues specific to the HBCU community.
A key aspect of the HBCU Scholar Program involves a partnership with NASA, promoting innovation and opportunity for the cohorts. The Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) Innovation Tech Transfer Idea Competition (MITTIC), known as “Mini MITTIC,” is integrated into the HBCU Scholar Program. HBCU Scholars will collaborate to develop ideas for commercializing technology based on NASA intellectual property to benefit their campuses and communities. In September, they will present their IP ideas at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center during the National HBCU Week Conference.
Torry Johnson, MUREP manager, expressed excitement about engaging with the White House Initiative on HBCUs and supporting this year’s cohort of White House Scholars. He looks forward to the new ideas that the Scholars will develop at the MITTIC Hack-a-thon, utilizing NASA’s technology portfolio to benefit the HBCU community.
HBCU Scholars will also participate in the 2023 HBCU Week National Annual Conference, scheduled for September 24-28, 2023, at the Hyatt Regency in Crystal City, Virginia. The conference themes, “Raising the Bar: Forging Excellence Through Innovation & Leadership,” will foster an environment of innovation, leadership, and personal and professional development. During this event, HBCU Scholars will have ample opportunities to interact with one another, initiative staff, and partners, showcasing their collective talent and abilities.
Following the conference, HBCU Scholars will be invited to engage in various programs, events, and monthly master classes aimed at enhancing their professional development and providing increased access to post-graduation opportunities with non-profit, business, and federal agency partners, ensuring that the nation remains globally competitive.
Further details about the activities of the 102 HBCU Scholars will be provided in the coming months as they serve as ambassadors for the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The list of HBCU Scholars, sorted alphabetically by their state or country of origin, is provided below.
