Teeing Up for Wellness: How Golf Can Help Alleviate Chronic Pain
Golf, a popular sport enjoyed by 25.6 million people in America in 2022, according to Statista.com, offers several benefits for individuals dealing with chronic pain. Incorporating golf into an exercise routine can provide unique advantages for managing pain and improving overall well-being. Here are some key benefits of golf:
- Low-impact exercise: Golf is a low-impact sport that puts minimal stress on joints, making it suitable for individuals with chronic pain. The gentle swinging motions involved in golfing promote flexibility, muscle strength, and joint mobility without placing excessive strain on the body.
- Physical activity and cardiovascular health: Walking the golf course and engaging in the game itself require moderate levels of physical activity, leading to improved cardiovascular health. Regular golfing can help lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, and enhance overall fitness levels.
- Stress reduction: Chronic pain often brings with it high levels of stress and anxiety. Golf provides an opportunity to spend time outdoors in a serene and scenic environment, promoting relaxation and stress reduction. The combination of fresh air, green surroundings, and the mental focus required for the game can contribute to improved mental well-being.
- Social interaction and support: Golf is a social sport that allows individuals to connect with others who share similar interests. Joining golf clubs or participating in group outings provides an avenue for social interaction, reducing feelings of isolation often experienced by individuals with chronic pain. Building relationships and receiving support from fellow golfers can positively impact mental and emotional health.
- Mind-body connection: Golf requires concentration, focus, and strategic thinking. Engaging in the sport can help divert attention away from pain and promote a stronger mind-body connection. The mental challenges associated with golf can provide a welcome distraction and enhance cognitive functioning.
- Personal satisfaction and achievement: Golf offers opportunities for personal growth and achievement. Setting goals, improving skills, and witnessing progress in the game can boost self-esteem and provide a sense of accomplishment. Focusing on the positive aspects of golfing can help individuals shift their attention away from pain and towards their personal achievements.
Incorporating golf into a pain management routine should be done in consultation with healthcare professionals, taking into consideration individual limitations and needs. By enjoying the physical activity, social interactions, and mental stimulation that golf provides, individuals with chronic pain can experience improved physical and mental well-being, leading to a better overall quality of life.
November 13, 1941 – May 11, 2023 (age 81)
On November 13, 1941, a personality larger than life arrived in South Ga. Walter and Rosa Gosier delighted in the arrival of their only son and named him Wilson Gosier. A proud native of Quitman, Georgia: Dixie and Dry Lake Road, respectively. Wilson was educated in the public schools of Brooks County. Wilson was identified early as a gifted student and accelerated through advanced classes, graduating at 16. Although undersized at 5’ 7”, he was a two-sport athlete playing basketball and baseball.
His matriculation continued at Fort Valley State College (FVSC). Wilson obtained the highest score to that date on the entrance math exam and excelled as a Dean’s List student. His excellent score and recommendations from his advisors motivated him to change his major from Agriculture to Education with a concentration in Math. During his sophomore year at Fort Valley State College, he and his college sweetheart Doris Marshall began distinguishing themselves from the ordinary. Although he entered Fort Valley at 16, standing 5’ 7”, by his junior year, he was 6’ 3” tall and lettered in basketball, football, and baseball. This was also the beginning of his long-tenured officiating career, starting with intramural basketball, football, and baseball.
Wilson was born with confidence and charisma. He knew he wanted to be a trailblazer. Wilson also knew trailblazers had middle initials and middle names. He chose “Epinol” as his middle name, which proved unique while aligning with the confidence and charisma he exuded. The man, the myth, and the legend, Wilson Epinol Gosier, emerged. As an undergrad, Wilson pledged to Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. After a well-coordinated courtship, Wilson and Doris married shortly after receiving their degrees from FVSC in 1963. No one had to impress upon Wilson the light in the Valley. Unknown to many outsiders, Fort Valley is a special place. A magical place. A place where upon leaving, you click your heels three times to herald your return.

For this reason, they made Fort Valley, GA, their home. Wilson and Doris left an indelible mark on the Fort Valley Community. In Divine 9 spirit, they collaborated with like-minded influential Black couples. They applied for and were awarded segregation monies from the United States Government. Wilson was appointed administrator of funding. In a bold move, he spearheaded securing land to build a swimming pool and baseball field exclusively for Blacks in the Jim Crow era, Fort Valley, GA. Wilson selected Bobby Thompson, an FVSC alumnus, to manage the pool. The pool was built on Historic and segregated H. E. Hunt High grounds, and the aquatic facility was nicknamed “Thomp Pool.” Wilson and Doris took great pride in this accomplishment, along with their friends Pete and Priscilla Mangrum. Years later, they became parents of two wonderful children, Wilson “Woody” Epinol and Marsha Nichole Gosier.
Wilson began his long educational career, demonstrating his multi-talents and skills. Wilson’s first job was as a mathematics/physical education teacher, head football and basketball coach, and assistant principal, in the Macon County School system at D. F. Douglas High School in Montezuma, GA. According to Mr. Billy Sellers, Mr. Gosier was a freedom fighter who walked it like he talked it and refused to bow down to the systems and traditions of Jim Crow in the American South.
In July 1969, Wilson began his initial tenure at Fort Valley State College as Associate Dean of Men. His versatility and familiarity with students and staff personnel permitted him to serve as an adjunct professor and Coach of the college’s Jr-Varsity Basketball team. At age 27, he was reported as the youngest dean in the country at that time. In 1971 Wilson obtained his Master’s Degree in Education from FVSC. He held advanced studies as a Ph.D. Candidate at Georgia State University 1976-1978. He was awarded the L.L.D. from Faith College in Birmingham, AL.
While Wilson and Doris divorced, they remained friends, and he never divorced Woody and Marsha. In 1978 Wilson took his talents to the Georgia Department of Education as Coordinator of Teacher Education and Executive Secretary of The Georgia Teacher Education Council. In this capacity, Wilson’s duties and responsibilities were extensive, comprehensive, and state-wide. This position included coordinating curriculum activities between the Georgia Department of Education (GDE) and thirty-four (34) colleges and universities offering teacher education programs. Within this realm of activities, he was responsible for monitoring teacher education programs, supervising student-teacher programs, budgeting functions, and implementing two annual conferences of the council.
Wilson met his second wife, Celeste Reeves Gosier of Chattanooga, TN. Celeste loved and doted on Wilson’s children from his union with Doris and welcomed his daughter Katrina Haugabook Hood. Celeste and Wilson divorced in 2014 after 30 years of marriage.
From 1980 to retirement in 1996, Wilson served as the Assistant Director of the Professional Practices Commission, State of Georgia. In this challenging position, Wilson investigated more than 700 complaints and prepared detailed reports of alleged misconduct by professional educators. As an expert wittiness, Wilson’s services were still sought to conduct investigations and hearings concerning fellow educators, as evidenced by his appointment to the Ethics board of the Dekalb County Board of Education. Wilson served in this capacity until he transitioned into the spiritual realm.
Concurrently with his long tenure as an educational leader, Wilson became an internationally acclaimed multi-sports game official.
Wilson began his journey as a game official at Fort Valley State College within the intramural sports program under Coach Hawkins. He was a natural as a game official in high school sports commencing in 1963 with basketball, baseball, and football. His presence, willingness, and competence led him to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), including the famed SIAC Basketball Tournament on the Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, Alabama, campus. He was inducted into the SIAC Hall of Fame in 1995. The next level of competition was the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In basketball and football, a 1963 Fort Valley State graduate was featured as a game official in many nationally televised events in venerable stadiums and arenas.
Wilson was the NCAA Basketball Official of the Year in 1984. He shared accolades that year with Athlete of the Year, Michael Jordan, and Commentator of the Year, Dick Vitale.
Wilson served as the game official in multiple basketball tournaments, high schools, colleges, and universities, such as ‘Metro Conference,’ and National Invitation Tournament (NIT).
Dr. Wilson Epinol “WEGO” officiated in more than 1500 Professional, Intercollegiate, High School, Little League, and Intramural Basketball and Football Venues, national coast to coast and internationally. His Professional Football affiliations include the NFL (retired), NBA, and WFL. Professional Basketball NBA and AABA. His Intercollegiate affiliations include Conferences, SEC, SIAC, SUN BELT, METRO, SICOA, BIG EAST, SOUTH ATLANTIC, and BLACK COLLEGE WOMEN’S. In addition, he officiated in three Intercollegiate Bowl Games, CITRUS, HALL of FAME, and COCA-COLA (Tokyo, Japan). High School GHSA.
Dr. Wilson Epinol Gosier was amongst the first group of minority NFL Officials after segregation in the American South and possibly the only man in America to officiate professionally for the NCAA NFL, WFL, NBA, and AABA. Wilson was a Line Judge for the NFL and officiated the 1983 NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame game. Before Colin Kaepernick, there was Wilson Gosier. The league office didn’t take kindly to Wilson’s fortitude. This was noted in Fred Wyant’s book “Offsides.” Fred believed Wilson Gosier to be the Line Judge he’d personally select to go into battle with. While the league office took offense to Wilson’s charges of racial discrimination in the 1980s, today, Wilson is considered an innovator within the NFL Retired Officials Association.
He was the Founder and Director of WEGO Golf Classic, a two-day tournament held the 4th week in June for 29 years, 1978 – 2007. More than 70 golfers participated in the annual event. Proceeds from the tournament were donated to Fort Valley State University’s Athletic Scholarship. WEGO is active in the NFL Retired Officials Association. In 2014 he was appointed by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal as an Authority Member of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Authority where he served as Secretary and is currently the 2023 Vice Chair of The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Authority.
All loved Wilson. To know him was to love him. He was a Man’s MAN, A caring father, an influencer, a world traveler, and an avid golfer. Without question, the ladies loved Big Poppa, and Big Poppa was quite fond of the ladies. He loved and cherished his family, making him the favorite uncle to his nieces and nephews. He remains “Uncle Wilson” to his nieces and nephews from both marriages.
On October 20, 2022, Wilson received the greatest heartbreak of his life, the transitioning of his namesake and best friend, Wilson “Woody” Epinol Gosier II, who preceded him in death. Wilson never recovered from this loss.
Wilson leaves behind a loving and fiercely devoted daughter from his first marriage: Marsha Nichole Gosier, Fort Valley, GA, the apple of his eye. Two beautiful daughters, Katrina Haugabook Hood (William) of Stockbridge, GA, whom he loved and cherished, and Chevon Fisher Carter (Louisville, KY), time simply was not on their side. One son-in-law “Hood” who he loved. Four intelligent and handsome grandsons: Cairo Sirod Jackson, William Gosier Hood, Garrison Patton Gosier, and Gavin Marshall Gosier. Whom he nicknamed Ace, Duece , Tre and Quarto. He and Cairo shared a special bond as his first Grandson, with whom they share birthdays. Wilson was proud of his remaining nieces: Sandra, Beverly, and Anita; his nephew Walter from his sisters and Emma Gosier Shelton and Stella Gosier Horne, who preceded him in death. An uncle, son, and brother relationship with his nephew Derek Horne.
We thank God for sharing the essence and presence of a spirit that will live forever: Dr. Wilson Epinol Gosier.

“Being inducted into the African American Golfers Hall of Fame makes me feel extremely grateful, honored, and humbled.,” said Leonard following the event. “I have to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and my parents for the success I have gained in my career. Chicago Golfer Ahmad Raoul Lives His Dream, Tees Off with Rory McIlroy
Ahmad Raoul, a passionate golfer hailing from Chicago, recently had an incredible opportunity to play alongside one of the PGA tour’s brightest stars. CBS 2’s Matt Zahn caught up with Raoul at Jackson Park Golf Course, where he was honing his skills and dreaming of making it big in the world of golf.
Ever since he first swung a golf club, Raoul has been enamored with the game. He recalls thinking, “Oh my god, I need to do this for the rest of my life.” A graduate of the First Tee of Greater Chicago program and an alumnus of Mt. Carmel, Raoul is now a rising sophomore at Winston-Salem State University. Through his involvement with the First Tee program, he received an extraordinary opportunity to participate in a Pro-Am event leading up to the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, playing alongside none other than Rory McIlroy.
Raoul, along with two other First Tee graduates and current HBCU students, had the privilege of teeing off with the golfing superstar in this special event. Raoul expressed his gratitude, stating, “I wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity without Wells Fargo and First Tee. It was truly a blessing to play with Rory and Alex. I learned a lot and gained valuable information that will help me succeed in the future.”
Playing with McIlroy was a dream come true for Raoul. He performed admirably and felt comfortable in that high-pressure environment. Reflecting on the experience, Raoul remarked, “I can get used to this. I’m trying to play professional golf one day.”
Raoul is leaving no stone unturned in his pursuit of his golfing ambitions. While the opportunity to play alongside McIlroy was fantastic, his ultimate goal is to compete against him on the PGA Tour. Raoul is willing to put in the hard work and dedication necessary to achieve his dreams. He shared that McIlroy complimented his game and, at the end of the ninth hole, during a picture-taking moment, expressed his desire to see Raoul out there competing professionally. This interaction was monumental for Raoul, solidifying his belief that he can achieve his goals if he puts in the effort.
Raoul outlined his approach to realizing his aspirations, stating, “Hard work, dedication, and believing in myself. It has been my goal since I started playing at the age of six. I know I can get there, and one day I’ll be there.” To gain a competitive edge, Raoul plans to participate in numerous amateur tournaments over the summer.
During the Pro-Am event with McIlroy, Raoul was fortunate to have his Winston-Salem State teammate, a fellow alum from Homewood-Flossmoor, as his caddie. This added a personal touch to an already remarkable experience.
As Raoul continues to work diligently on his game and participate in tournaments, he remains steadfast in his pursuit of a professional golfing career. With the incredible opportunity to play alongside McIlroy fueling his determination, Raoul is ready to take on the challenge of making his mark on the PGA Tour and turning his dreams into reality.
New Information Emerges: Rory McIlroy relative killed by notorious UDA murder gang and not UVF as previously believed
In a startling revelation, new information has come to light regarding the tragic murder of a relative of golfing sensation Rory McIlroy. Contrary to previous beliefs that the murder was carried out by the UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force) it has now been uncovered that the notorious UDA (Ulster Defence Association) murder gang was responsible for this heinous act, according to irishnews.com,
The revelation adds a shocking twist to an already tragic story. The UDA, known for its involvement in acts of violence and terrorism, has a dark history that has caused widespread fear and unrest in Northern Ireland. This development sheds new light on the circumstances surrounding the murder and the motive behind it.
The impact of this revelation cannot be understated. It not only alters the narrative surrounding the incident but also raises questions about the initial investigation and the accuracy of the information that was previously presented. The McIlroy family, as well as the wider community, are now left to grapple with the painful reality that their loved one fell victim to the UDA, a notorious and dangerous paramilitary organization.
This recent disclosure highlights the importance of thorough and ongoing investigations, particularly in cases with political or sectarian implications. It serves as a reminder that the pursuit of truth and justice must remain relentless, even when faced with complex and deeply rooted criminal networks.
As this new information comes to light, it is crucial to remember the significance of uncovering the truth and bringing those responsible to justice. The McIlroy family, alongside countless others affected by the actions of paramilitary groups, deserve closure and the reassurance that every effort will be made to hold the perpetrators accountable.
The emerging details regarding the involvement of the UDA in this tragic event demand further examination, and it is hoped that the relevant authorities will act swiftly and decisively to uncover the complete truth. Only through a comprehensive investigation can the McIlroy family and the affected community begin the difficult process of healing and find a sense of closure.
This revelation serves as a somber reminder of the impact that violence and criminal organizations can have on individuals and communities. It underscores the need for continued efforts to address the root causes of such violence and work towards a more peaceful and inclusive society.

Don’t Miss Out! Applications Now Open for the 2024 Masters Tickets
It’s June, and for golf enthusiasts worldwide, it’s the time to hope for a chance to secure Masters tickets. Masters badges are among the most sought-after tickets in the sports world. If you’re not fortunate enough to have connections, your options usually boil down to either paying a premium in the secondary ticket market or trying your luck through the Masters ticket application process. Starting from now until June 20, anyone can create a free account on Masters.com and apply to purchase tickets.
Aspiring patrons have the opportunity to select from a range of options, including Monday or Tuesday practice rounds, the Wednesday Par 3 Contest, or any of the four tournament rounds from Thursday through Sunday. The 2024 Masters is scheduled for April 11-14. According to Masters.com, “Applicants may apply for any and all days; however, they are eligible to win only one day.” So, while you can apply for multiple days, you can only be selected for one.
If luck is on your side and you get selected, the ticket prices vary depending on the day. For Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, each ticket costs $100, while during tournament competition (Thursday to Sunday), the price increases to $140 per ticket. The Masters.com ticket website states, “All applicants will be notified via email in late July when the random selection process is completed.” The exact number of tickets distributed through this process remains unknown, but rest assured, dreams do come true.
It’s important to remember that Augusta National, Inc. is the only authorized source and seller of Masters tickets. The resale of any Masters ticket is strictly prohibited. Holders of tickets acquired from third parties, regardless of the means, may be denied entry to the Tournament. It’s worth noting that tickets are not available for sale at the gates. If you’re interested in tickets for future years, including 2025 and beyond, you will need to reapply each time.
As the anticipation builds and golf fans worldwide submit their applications, the hope of securing coveted Masters tickets remains alive. Whether it’s the opportunity to witness practice rounds or the thrill of watching tournament competition, the Masters continues to captivate golf enthusiasts, making it a truly special event on the sporting calendar.

Silvis, IL. (May 30, 2023) – Marcus Byrd continued his memorable 2023 season with a two-stroke victory over a strong field Tuesday, winning the APGA at TPC Deere Run championship with a 9-under par performance over two days of competition.
The 25-year-old from Temple Hill, Maryland (suburban Washington D.C.), expanded his one-stroke lead from Monday’s first round with a five-under 66 to fashion a 67-66-133 for his third victory in just four starts on the 2023 APGA Tour. He held off Chase Johnson of West Palm Beach, Florida, who registered the round of the day with an 8-under 63, playing his last 20 holes in 10 under par. Johnson and Jarred Garcia of Jacksonville tied for second at 7-under 135.
Byrd, 25, started the season by winning the APGA Tour’s prominent season-opening tournament, the APGA Tour Farmers Insurance Invitational at Torrey Pines, and followed that up with an 11-stroke victory at APGA Florida in March. As a result of his stellar play since September, Byrd earned exemptions into three PGA TOUR events (Genesis Invitational, Honda Classic and Wells Fargo Championship), using that experience to hone his skills for all competition.
“The PGA TOUR experience is definitely a huge help. It’s cool to see how hard those guys work. I learned about being calm and to stay within myself,” offered Byrd, who fought off several days of illness before teeing off in the Wells Fargo Championship without having played a practice round. “I overcame adversity there and overall with the PGA TOUR experience, I now understand what I need to do.”
Byrd finished 14th in PGA TOUR Canada Q School in the spring to earn conditional status, so tournaments north of the border are on his schedule in the summer before APGA Tour competition resumes in July.
While he has yet to make a PGA TOUR cut, Byrd fired a one-under par 69 in the second round of the Honda Classic and an even-par 71 on the second day of the Wells Fargo.
Byrd pocketed the $7,500 first prize from the $25,000 purse. The 7,091-yard TPC Deere Run layout will host the PGA TOUR’s John Deere Classic on July 6-9.
Among the Illinois and Chicago region players, Alec Martinez of Orland Park shot 69-72-141 for 9th place; Varun Chopra of Champaign shot 75-68-143, finishing 13th; Mulbe Dillard of Hyde Park shot 72-74-146, good for 21st place; and Christian Heavens from Fairview Heights shot 74-75-149, finishing in 29th position.
APGA at TPC Deere Run also marked the debut of 2023 Cisco Junior Series competition with Jayden Lizama of Elk Grove, California taking first place with a 71-73-144. Toa Ogahengaue of Salt Lake City, Utah shot 73-75-148, good for 2nd place; and Roman Solomon of Sarasota, Florida, placed third with a 75-75-150. Fourth went to Morgan Riley of Raleigh, North Carolina (72-82-154) and fifth went to DJ Belcher of Simpsonville, South Carolina (80-80-160).
In the girls competition, Staci Pla of West Palm Beach, Florida won with a 71-74-145, topping Lydia Portlock of San Antonio, Texas (75-75-150). Callia Ward of Albuquerque, New Mexico, shot 76-77-153 for third place, Blayne Brown of Riverside, California shot 72-81-153 for fourth and Sophia Lauture of Concord, North Carolina finished fifth with an 83-74-157.
The Cisco Junior Series consists of four competitions at APGA Tour events with the under-18 minority players competing for opportunities to tee it up at APGA Tour and other events. The program includes an Elite Player Combine presented by ADP with a clinic and reception featuring expert input on skills development and how to pursue college scholarships. The series resumes August 14-15 at the Mastercard APGA Tour Championship at TPC Sugarloaf in Atlanta.
The APGA Tour is back in action in July, heading to Louisville, Kentucky, for APGA Tour at Valhalla on July 23-25. One of the most prominent venues in the sport, Valhalla Golf Club will host the 2024 PGA Championship.
The Advocates Professional Golf Association was established in 2010 as a non-profit organization with the mission to bring greater diversity to the game of golf. The APGA Tour Board of Directors work to accomplish this by hosting and operating professional golf tournaments, player development programs, mentoring programs and by introducing the game to inner city young people. The APGA Tour consists of up to eighteen tournaments nationwide with over $800,000 in prize money.
