One of the great things about playing golf as a team sport is that you get to build bonds that last for a lifetime. I have fond memories competing on U.S. #PresidentsCup teams, and look forward to bringing the team aspect to @TGL with @McIlroyRory. #TGLtalks https://t.co/dfLQMJLTof

Munashe Ndaruza, a greenskeeper’s son, representing All Africa Golf Team at debut Championship in Egypt

WINGATE Park Golf Club-based amateur golfer Munashe Ndaruza is relishing the opportunity of representing the country for the first time in an international competition at the All Africa Golf Team Championship in Egypt from September 27 – 30.
The rising star, who grew up in Harare’s high-density suburb of Glen View, has been enjoying a memorable season on the domestic circuit after capturing five titles.
Ndaruza started the season in style by clinching the Julius Robinson Trophy on his home course at Wingate before going on to win the Chapman Grand Slam, the Masvingo Amateur Championship, the Roland Park Open and most recently the Bata Power Open.
The promising golfer, who celebrates his 21st birthday on Saturday, will be joined by fellow top amateurs Keegan Shutt, Clifford Muchenje and Tanaka Chatora at the continental competition which has over the years been dominated by neighbors South Africa.
Ndaruza, who is currently the highest ranked player on the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) Order of Merit Standings, said he was excited by the opportunity to represent the country at such as prestigious competition.
“It feels really great to have the chance to compete and represent Zimbabwe at such a big event. I’m looking forward to gaining some experience from the exposure which comes with competing in such tournaments,” Ndaruza said.
While Ndaruza is now on the verge of representing Zimbabwe at one of the biggest stages in African amateur golf, not so long ago his dream was to represent the country in soccer.
Despite his father’s close links to Wingate Golf Club, where he works as a greenkeeper, Ndaruza was more interested in soccer.
“I was a soccer fanatic and during my high school days, I used to take it seriously so much that I dreamt of myself following the footsteps of Peter Ndlovu. I never had plans for golf and I am actually surprised with the strong affection that I now have towards this sport,” he said.
“I developed a passion for golf at a later stage when I got a chance to join Wingate Golf club. I used to think that golf is only for the rich man and I am actually surprised by the wins that I am attaining in every tournament that I participate in.”
Ndaruza, who is inspired by former World number one golfer Tiger Woods said he hopes to continue representing Zimbabwe in more international tournaments in the future.
“My goal now is to represent my country at more international tournaments and I am very confident that I am going to make my country proud.
The 2022 All Arica Amateur Championship will see the countries will battle it out once again in a 72-hole stroke play format with the best three scores counting towards the team total in each round at the El Gouna Golf course in Hurghada, Egypt.
South Africa won the inaugural biennial event in 2001 and consequently triumphed in Botswana (2003), Uganda (2005), Namibia (2007), Egypt (2011), Swaziland (2013), Kenya (2015) and Zimbabwe (2017).

Marcus Byrd Cruises to 2nd Pro Victory with Hot Putter at APGA Tour Valley Forge, Blue Bell, PA

(September 22, 2022) – APGA Tour rising star Marcus Byrd captured his second title in 15 months, winning the APGA Tour Valley Forge Championship, the second of four events in the APGA Tour Farmers Insurance Fall Series, on Wednesday at Bluestone Country Club in Montgomery County, just west of Philadelphia.
Byrd’s triumph, in only his second year on the tour, included three putts of over 40 feet during Tuesday’s first round as he forged a four-stroke lead. He played mistake-free golf over the final 18 holes to pocket the $7,500 first prize from the $25,000 purse.
VIEW LEADERBOARD HERE
The fifth-place finisher in the regular-season Lexus Cup Point Standings, Byrd is now a top contender for bonus pool prize money in the Farmers Insurance Fall Series, which concludes with events in Houston (October 25-26) and Los Angeles (November 9-10).
His first-round heroics included nine birdies enroute to a six-under 65 and a four-shot lead over Andrew Walker of Holt, Michigan. He shot a nine-under, 65-68-133, five shots better than Gabe Lench of Lake Mary, Florida, who finished 71-67-138. Joseph Hooks of Farmington Hills, Michigan, took third at 70-71-141 on the par 71, 6,372-yard layout in Montgomery County.
The 25-year-old resident of Washington D.C. starred at Middle Tennessee St. and competed in the 2020 U.S. Amateur at Bandon Dunes. He started in golf with First Tee of Greater Washington D.C. playing at Langston Golf Course at the age of seven and carved out a distinguished junior career, winning the Georgia State Junior Championship in 2013 before earning Conference USA Player of the Year plaudits as a college senior.

“My putter was hot and that helped with the long putts yesterday and a bunch of one-putt greens today,” stated Byrd, who protected his lead with a mistake-free, three-birdie round. “My game is moving in the right direction. I’m a pro golfer who is just not there yet.” Byrd has multiple runner-up finishes in recent months, including a tie for second at the Mastercard APGA Tour Championship in San Antonio last month. He is just back from Portugal, where he competed at the DP World Tour Q-School, shooting a 28 on the front nine in the third round but failing to move to the next stage over the four-round tournament.
In the APGA Tour’s new Cisco Junior Series presented by the Champ Foundation, Philadelphia-area amateur Matt Vital of Bethlehem defeated K.J. Ofahengaue of Utah on the first playoff hole by sinking a 12-foot birdie putt. It was his second victory in the Cisco Junior Series this year and he is in the driver’s seat to secure a berth in the APGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Invitational at Torrey Pines in January, when the APGA Tour plays a tandem event during the PGA TOUR’s Farmers Insurance Open.
Among the other Philadelphia-area players, Zach Juhasz of Bethlehem shot 72-70-142, good for fourth place; Louis Kelly of Sewell, New Jersey, shot 72-71-143, finishing sixth; and Jeff Cunningham of Philadelphia, who played golf at Drexel, shot a 72-81-153 for 39th place.
APGA Tour Valley Forge was hosted by the Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board, which promotes the Montgomery County region’s 50-plus golf courses as part of its MontoGolf initiative. APGA Tour Valley Forge week kicked off Sunday with the Advocates Foundation Youth Clinic at The Club at Shannondell in Audubon, PA, where young people from The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia and other community organizations interacted with experts in the fields of health/wellness, mental health, career options and golf, including APGA Tour players and officials. The program included the awarding of $2,000 in educational grants to essay contest winners.
APGA Tour competition continues with the series’ first international tournament, the Butterfield Bermuda APGA Championship October 11-12 at Port Royal Course in Southampton, Bermuda.
The APGA Tour was established in 2010 with the mission to bring greater diversity to the game of golf by hosting and operating professional golf tournaments, player development programs, mentoring programs, and introducing the game to inner-city young people. The tour has grown from seven events with $200,000 in prize money in 2020 and 14 events with over $400,000 in prize money in 2021, to 18 events with over $900,000 in prize and bonus money in 2022.
The APGA Tour Farmers Insurance Fall Series is designed to further the APGA Tour’s mission of bringing greater diversity to the game of golf and to provide additional playing and earning opportunities to APGA Tour players.
Sponsoring the APGA Tour Farmers Insurance Fall Series is part of several actions and initiatives that Farmers(r) has taken to help advance its commitment to diversity and growth in the game of golf. The national insurer has provided funding for APGA TOUR events and the organization’s athletes, sponsored players including Kamaiu Johnson and Willie Mack III, hosted the first-ever APGA event at a PGA TOUR tournament at the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open, provided Mack with a sponsor’s exemption into the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open, and provided Johnson and Ryan Alford with sponsor’s exemptions into the 2022 Farmers Insurance Open. This support led to a landmark moment for the APGA Tour as the 2022 APGA Tour Farmers Insurance Invitational was the first-ever APGA Tour event to be broadcast on national television with the final round airing on Golf Channel.
Tiger Woods, not at Quail Hollow, but he’s still part of the American team
Tiger Woods was a playing captain during the 2019 Presidents Cup and his participation helped lead the U.S. team to victory at Royal Melbourne. But it’s a different story this week. The former world number one is not with the U.S. team at Quail Hollow Club, rather, still recovering from the roll-over car crash he sustained in 2021.
Although the iconic golfer is not physically at Quail Hollow does not mean that he has abandoned the team altogether. According to U.S. Captain Davis Love III on Thursday,
“I was standing on the sixth tee for a long time watching every group come through and I called him and we talked for a while…I said, ‘at least you’re watching. You can call if you see anything.’”
Love confirmed that Woods continues to be involved with the U.S. Team, if even at a distance. And, we have all seen Wood continuously involved with American teams in recent years as a captain, vice captain or player and Love acknowledged he remains engaged even from afar.
“He’s having fun. He obviously misses it,” Love said. “The other night on a Zoom call, [Fred Couples] asked him, ‘When are you getting in?’ Tiger laughed, ‘What’d you say?’ I know he wishes he were here.”
Full match scoring from the Presidents Cup
Woods, who only played just three events this year, has shared with the public his schedule limitations while also admitting that a grueling week climbing the North Carolina hills wasn’t an option.
“It’s not easy. We’re banging around in a cart and walking up and down hills. I get it,” Love said. “We’re including him, as usual.”
William ‘Bill’ Bishop, Dies at 91, pioneering golf professional and amateur golfer
William “Bill” Bishop, a pioneering golfer, died on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2018, at his home in Philadelphia. He was 91.
He was an African American PGA golf professional and amateur golfer who impacted the development of golf on the Eastern Coast of the United States.
“Bishop,” as his friends affectionately called him, was one of the first four African Americans to achieve PGA professional status.
He was also a founder, stockholder, board member and head golf professional of the Greater Philadelphia Golf and Country Club’s Freeway Golf Course in Sicklerville, N.J.
Bishop and his friends, sponsors and supporters established the Bill Bishop Junior Golf Foundation. For 43 years, the Bill Bishop Benefit Golf Classic funded junior golf programs for youth ages 8 to 18.
This venue provided an opportunity for many African Americans to play in a notable tournament as aspiring professional golfers and for championship amateurs to develop and hone their skills.
He is survived by: his sons, Tony Bishop of Akron, Ohio, and Kevin Lindsay (Teresa) of Vineland, N.J.; grandchildren, William Anthony Bishop III, Matthew Lindsay, Nikki Lindsay, Anthony Lindsay, Andre Lindsay and Brianna Lindsay; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on March 2 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 1530 N. 11th St. Viewing is at 9 a.m. Services will follow at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Bill Bishop Junior Golf Scholarship Fund.
Terry Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

APGA FOUNDATION YOUTH CLINIC TEACHES HEALTH, WELLNESS IN LAUNCH OF GOLF TOURNEY

APGA Tour week in Montgomery County got off to a rousing start Sunday, when the APGA Foundation Youth Clinic educated and entertained some
60 youths from First Tee Philadelphia in advance of the second annual professional golf tournament Tuesday and Wednesday at Bluestone Country Club in Blue Bell.
APGA Tour Valley Forge has returned to the Philadelphia Region under the sponsorship of the Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board as part of its MontcoGolf initiative promoting the 50-plus courses in the region. The tournament is open to the public with free admission for both the first round on Tuesday and the final round on Wednesday. The pros will tee off beginning at 8 am with the leaders expected to be finishing Wednesday around 2:30 p.m.
The 36-hole competition will award $25,000 in prize money with a $7,500 first prize to the winner from a field of over 50 of the top minority players in the country. It is the second event of the Farmers Insurance Fall Series, which continues in Houston and Los Angeles in October and November as the 18-event, 2022 season comes to a close.
The APGA Foundation Youth Clinic was hosted by The Club at Shannondell in Audubon, where the participants engaged with a financial advisor, lawyers, and experts in health/wellness, mental health, career choices and the sport of golf. The APGA Foundation awarded $2,400 in educational grants to the winners of an essay contest. It was the first full-scale APGA Foundation Youth Clinic since the global pandemic sidelined all such programs back in 2020.
“There was a real buzz about the clinic and I think it could triple in size next year, now that we are back in action with lunch, prizes, our experts, and the educational grants,” said Cole Smith, Executive Director of the APGA Tour and the APGA Foundation. “We expect more community organizations to get involved next year now that we have established the event here in conjunction with the APGA Tour Valley Forge tournament and Valley Forge Tourism.”
The APGA Tour was founded in 2010 with three tournaments awarding $40,000. It has grown dramatically in the past three years with seven events in 2020 and 14 last year. The APGA Tour will award some $900,000 in purses and bonus awards in 2022.

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R returns after a three-year hiatus with more power and performance characteristics than its predecessor. The redesigned Golf R hatchback’s new turbocharged engine and all-wheel-drive system is a joy to drive.
Although the 2022 Golf R and the less expensive GTI returned to the U.S. with flair, the regular Golf hatchback will not be coming to these shores.
Models/Price: Priced at $44,185, the base Golf R comes fully loaded in a standard six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission for $44,890 MSRP.
Both models have a full suite of driver assistance and safety features, including adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving, lane-keeping assist, forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring.
The 2022 Golf R has premium quality interior features that include the latest technology and conveniences, including a 10.2-inch display, sports seats, Napa leather, carbon-like trim, stainless-steel pedals, and ambient lighting with 30 colors.
Underneath its conventional-looking exterior is sporty features that contribute to its smooth handling and power, including four chrome exhaust outlets, side skirts, a rear spoiler, cross-drilled front brake rotors, and 19-inch wheels.
Power: The 2022 Golf R is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine that generates 315 horsepower at 310 lb-ft of torque versus the 288 horses in the previous model.
Controlled cornering and maneuvering have been improved by an advanced 4Motion all-wheel-drive system featuring a rear differential, which transfers torque between the right and left rear wheels for better handling. An R button on the steering wheel activates various drive modes: Comfort, Individual, Drift, Special, Sport, or Race. Comfort was my choice in dense traffic, while Sport worked best in highway situations.
Fuel Economy: EPA fuel ratings for the Golf R automatic is 23 city/30 highway mpg, while the manual transmission averages less at 20 city/28 highway mpg.
