It was a happy Friday for NBA star Steph Curry who is most known for his incredible long-range shooting on the basketball court – but it turns out he’s pretty good from distance on the golf course too, Watch what he managed to pull off at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship.
Clifford Alexander Jr., first Black secretary of Army, dies at 88
Clifford L. Alexander Jr., a Harlem-raised, Ivy League-educated lawyer who was a crusading chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in the late 1960s and later served as the first Black secretary of the Army, died July 3 at his home in Manhattan. He was 88. His wife, Adele Logan Alexander, confirmed the death but did not provide a specific cause.
Guided by powerful mentors in academia, law and government, Mr. Alexander was the first Black student-body president at Harvard University, the first Black partner at the elite Washington law firm Arnold & Porter and spent his career seeking to shatter racial boundaries with statesmanlike calm. He seemed destined for elective office but lost a close race for D.C. mayor in 1974, shortly after the city won home rule.
Mr. Alexander came to Washington in 1963 on the recommendation of McGeorge Bundy, a former Harvard dean who served in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations as national security adviser. Mr. Alexander helped shepherd the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965 and became Lyndon B. Johnson’s personal consultant on civil rights before he became EEOC chairman in 1967.
The EEOC, created under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, had no mandate for legal action but could make recommendations based on its investigations of employment discrimination aimed at racial and religious minorities. Mr. Alexander was the third chairman and first Black official to hold the post.
He immediately launched investigations into the textile and drug industries as well as utility companies and labor unions, and demonstrated the minuscule numbers of minorities in the white-collar ranks of major corporations.
At a congressional hearing in March 1969, Mr. Alexander testified about rampant discrimination against Blacks and Mexican Americans in Hollywood. Senate Minority Leader Everett M. Dirksen (R-Ill.) called the hearing “a carnival” and lambasted the EEOC for using its power to target an industry that had “given employment to hundreds of Negroes.”
“We didn’t intend for the work-givers of this nation — business and industry — to be harassed,” Dirksen said.
Mr. Alexander was unflappable in his response. “It’s important that the law be enforced,” he said, adding that the harassment of African Americans far exceeded that of business executives.
Irked, the veteran lawmaker replied that “this punitive harassment has got to stop, or I’ll go to the highest authority in this government to get somebody fired.”
Shortly thereafter, the Nixon administration announced its intention to install a Republican commission chairman. Mr. Alexander resigned, citing a “crippling lack of administration support” and a Justice Department unresponsive to his requests for help in enforcing racial discrimination. EEOC member William H. Brown III, also African American, succeeded him.
Edward C. Sylvester, an African American who became the first director of the Labor Department’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance, told The Washington Post at the time that Mr. Alexander “gave the commission some life and the legislation some meaning. He grabbed the only thing they had at the time, which was the right to hold hearings, and he did an extraordinary job.”
After leaving government, Mr. Alexander joined Arnold & Porter, where he practiced corporate and discrimination law and recruited new hires from Howard University’s law school. He also hosted a syndicated TV public affairs show, “Cliff Alexander: Black on White.”
In his mayoral race, his opponent in the Democratic primary was Walter E. Washington, the District’s presidentially appointed mayor-commissioner since 1967 and the first Black chief executive of a major U.S. city. Mr. Alexander, who had worked on a home rule bill when he served under Johnson, ran on his civil rights and public service records and garnered 47 percent of the vote, but Washington bested him and became the first directly elected mayor of the city in more than a century.
Mr. Alexander returned to legal work until President Jimmy Carter tapped him in 1977 as Army secretary. His military experience was scant — he had served briefly as a private after law school — but his appointment as the first Black civilian head of a U.S. military branch was hailed as a milestone.
His survivors include his wife, Adele Logan, a Fieldston and Radcliffe College graduate who taught history at George Washington University, and two children, Elizabeth Alexander of Manhattan, a poet who chaired Yale’s African American studies department and is now president of the arts-supporting Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and Mark Alexander, who became the first Black dean of Villanova University law school, of Radnor, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.

Tiger Woods a hero at JP McManus Pro-Am as he helps woman hit by tee shot from Dragon’s Den star Peter Jones
Iconic golfer Tiger Woods rushed to a fan’s rescue after she was hit by a stray golf ball from Dragon’s Den star Peter Jones while at this past weekend’s JP McManus Pro-Am at Adare Manor in Limerick, Ireland.
Accidents do happen on golf courses all of the time with such things as golf carts turning over, hanging signs falling down, and even wayward golf shots striking spectators. One spectator at this past weekend’s JP McManus Pro-Am had such an incident, when the tee shot from Den star Peter Jones struck her. What probably most surprised her is that 15-time major-winner Tiger Woods would run over and check on her condition, standing over her for a close encounter.
A swath of celebrities were in attendance for the annual 36-hole event. But the most popular, undoubtedly, was Tiger Woods. The player was guaranteed to attract attention even if he hadn’t played.
Part of the Pro-Am’s appeal is that influx of non-professional players, and British entrepreneur Peter Jones had the pleasure of teaming up alongside Woods on this occasion. One tee shot in particular won’t have impressed his pro peer, however, after Jones—the only surviving member of the original Dragon’s Den cast—struck a woman with his opening drive.
Woods was quick to respond, checking on the fan to see is she was okay. Now, fans are anxiously hoping he’ll be teeing up at next week’s Open Championship (July 14-17) as planned.
Xander Schauffele followed up Monday’s sensational 64 with a 70 on Tuesday to claim a one-shot victory at the JP McManus Pro-AM. Tiger Woods closed with a 2-over 74 to finish tied for 39th. The Open Championship 2022 is the last major on the golf schedule this season and there hasn’t been a signal given as to how Woods’ health is holding up.
STATELINE, Nev. – Stephen Curry, World Champion Golden State Warriors MVP of the NBA Finals, will step out into the public eye for competition again this week at the American Century Championship Celebrity Golf Tournament at Lake Tahoe.
The star backcourt player is also an excellent golfer and is among the contenders to win the 33rd annual tournament for celebrities only. He would have to defeat former champions Tony Romo, Mardy Fish, and Mark Mulder along with John Smoltz, 2021 winner Vinny Del Negro and Annika Sorenstam – the greatest player in the history of women’s golf.
One of the strongest fields in tournament history is ready to tee it up at the 33rd annual tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, Friday through Sunday.
Music star Nick Jonas will make his debut, joining such celebrities as Justin Timberlake, Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Charles Barkley.
Curry was named NBA Finals MVP last month after leading the Golden State Warriors to their fourth NBA title in eight seasons. His dad, Dell, and brother, Seth, are also in the field.
The 54-hole tournament, held annually at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course since 1990, will be televised on Peacock, the Golf Channel and NBC. The winner receives $125,000 of the $600,000 purse.
Other newcomers in the 87-player field include Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost, WWE Superstar The Miz and singer/songwriter Jake Owen.
Romo, an NFL commentator for CBS and a former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, and Fish, the former ATP tennis player, are listed as the co-favorites at 11-to-4, according to the Caesars Sportsbook by William Hill. A $4 wager would return $11.
They are followed closely by Del Negro, the former NBA player and coach, at 5-to-1; former MLB pitchers Smoltz (9-to-2) and Mulder (13-to-2); and Sorenstam (17-to-2). Steph Curry is listed at 12-to-1, along with former NFL defensive lineman Kyle Williams.
Barkley, the NBA legend who has long been a fan favorite at this event, said in a teleconference call last month that he would likely wager $100,000 on himself to finish among the top 70, a wager that Caesars created last year after learning of Barkley’s improved game.
Barkley has annually finished among the bottom three at the ACC but tied for 76th out of 88 players in 2021. His $100,000 bet last year was returned to him because it is illegal for one to wager on himself in Nevada. He said he would have a friend place the bet for him this year.
Tournament officials are expecting more than 50,000 fans to attend during the week.
This annual leadership immersion event for the leaders of the National Urban League affiliate movement brings together some of the brightest minds and dedicated hearts to expand expertise, build community, and share learnings for a stronger, more effective Urban League movement. 78 First Tee Teens Selected for PGA TOUR Champions’ PURE Insurance Championship Impacting First Tee at Pebble Beach
Golf legend Jack Nicklaus, Golf Channel’s Damon Hack, and PGA TOUR players, including First Tee alum Austin Smotherman and Cameron Champ, surprise teens with an invitation to the event
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (July 5, 2022) – First Tee and PGA TOUR Champions announced today the 78 First Tee participants selected to play in the 2022 PURE Insurance Championship Impacting First Tee. The event, in its 19th year, will bring teens from First Tee chapters to Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course for the PGA TOUR Champions tournament, Sept. 20-25. The annual event, hosted by the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, is televised internationally on Golf Channel.
Throughout the week, the teens apply their character strengths and the life skills learned from First Tee programs during the one-of-a-kind event where they are paired with a PGA TOUR Champions player and amateurs from the business world. Ranging in ages from 14 to 18, the First Tee participants compete for the Pro-Junior Team title. The teens represent 52 First Tee chapters from across the country and – for the second year in a row – a participant from First Tee — Morocco will be in the field. Participants were selected by a national panel of judges based on their personal growth and development through First Tee’s programs, as well as their playing ability.
The full junior field was revealed live on Golf Channel’s “Golf Today” with host Damon Hack surprising Diego Ocasio from First Tee – Metropolitan New York with the news of his selection. In addition, several players and legends of the game helped surprise select participants leading up to the full field announcement, including World Golf Hall of Fame Member Jack Nicklaus, PGA TOUR players Stewart Cink, Cameron Champ and Austin Smotherman, PGA TOUR Champions players Ken Duke and Larry Mize and No. 1 APGA Collegiate Player and Duke University stand-out Quinn Riley.
In addition to the surprises, Bryson Hughes of First Tee – North Florida and Francesca Sumcad of First Tee – Silicon Valley each earned exemptions this month during the First Tee National Championship.
“Congratulations to the 78 participants who have been selected to play and represent First Tee on a national stage,” said Greg McLaughlin, First Tee CEO. “This is a special year as First Tee celebrates our 25th anniversary of empowering youth and providing opportunities like the PURE Insurance Championship for participants to take their First Tee experience to the next level and explore the possibilities in golf and beyond. Thank you to our partners − PURE Insurance, PGA TOUR Champions, Pebble Beach Resorts, Monterey Peninsula Foundation and Golf Channel − for their commitment to young people and helping us provide this opportunity to these deserving teens.”
This year’s field of PGA TOUR Champions players will feature World Golf Hall of Fame Members Bernhard Langer, Mark O’Meara, Vijay Singh, as well as three-time PURE Insurance Championship winners Kirk Triplett and KJ Choi, who will defend his title. Clint Eastwood serves as chairman of the PURE Insurance Championship.
Play will be conducted on Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course on Friday and Saturday. The final round will be contested solely at Pebble Beach Golf Links on Sunday, where 23 First Tee juniors will compete based on their 36-hole performance. The tournament will crown one male and one female First Tee Junior Champion on Sunday.
More than 1,000 teens from First Tee have played in the PURE Insurance Championship, experiencing the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet, play and be mentored by PGA TOUR Champions players and amateurs.
“Supporting these incredible young men and women along with the great work of First Tee through this sponsorship is tremendously rewarding for our entire team,” said Katie Krum, Chief Marketing Officer at PURE Insurance. “I know firsthand the impact and value that participating in youth sports can have on one’s development, personally and professionally, so I am particularly proud to be part of an organization that lends support to such a worthy cause.”

Tiger Woods Teeing Up Monday at the J.P. McManus Pro-Am in Ireland. So what is this Pro-Am anyway?
Fans will have another chance to take a peek at how Tiger Wood’s game is coming along on Monday, as he is playing with Irish businessman Michael Smurfit, Tony Smurfit and Sharon Smurfit at the J.P. McManus Pro-Am in Ireland. The family’s company once owned the K Club outside Dublin.
There was no sounding of the alarms on Golf Twitter over the weekend, according to Golf Digest, no wild frenzy from fans watching anxiously to see if a certain iconic golfer’s private jet had taken off for a trans-Atlantic flight. Unlike the Masters, PGA Championship and U.S. Open, Tiger Woods was not reluctant to share his intent to play in the upcoming Open Championship at St. Andrews.
The legendary golfer has called the Old Course his favorite in the whole wide world, and for a 46-year-old player, the course layout seems to be a good fit for a recuperating golfer, following significant injuries to his right leg after his roll-over car accident in February 2021.
Prior to arriving in Scotland and the Home of Golf, however, Woods’ schedule plans include one early stop. Shortly after playing the Masters in April and stating that he had his sights set on St. Andrews, The former World No. 1 player also announced he was dedicated to competing July 4-5 in the J.P. McManus Pro-Am at Adare Manor in Limerick, Ireland.
As Woods continues to recover from his injury, one may wonder why he decided to participate. What is the J.P. McManus Pro-Am anyway? And Why is Tiger playing in it? Because, we recall that he struggled with tiredness during his round at the Masters in April, finishing 47th, and at the PGA Championship in May, the golfer did not complete the round, withdrawing before the end. And, remember, he did not play in the U.S. Open in June, saying he choose to rest up for the Open. So, the question is why then play a week ahead in a pro-am?
Consider this, the J.P. McManus isn’t just this isn’t any pro-am tournament. Irish businessman and philanthropist McManus hosts the two-day event and he also owns, among other things, Adare Manor, which is scheduled to host the 2027 Ryder Cup. At age 71, McManus launched his first pro-am back in 1990 and has continuously held the event every five years through 2010. Tiger has a history with the tournament and previously played in it in 2000, 2005 and 2010.
The event has also been an impressive fundraiser in its region for charities, garnering $160 million in the first five events, According to the pro-am’s website. The pro-am was postponed in 2020 due to the COVid pandemic, missing a scheduled sixth run, so this 2022 tournament is making an exciting return.
The J.P. McManus is highly popular with nine of the top 10 players in the World Ranking competing, and roughly 30 of the top 100 players, each paired with three amateur partners. The players confirmed to play include: Scottie Scheffler, Matt Fitzpatrick, Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth. Notably, the first Irishwoman to win a LPGA Tour event, Leona Maguire, is also playing.
Joining the list of top pros competing are also some recognizable amateur players: including Niall Horan, Jamie Doran and Bill Murray. Peek this, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan is also playing in the tournament (with his pro Tom Hoge and other amateurs are Johann Rupert and Phil Hogan) and DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley (his pro is Brandon Stone and other amateurs are Guy Kinnings and Keith Waters). So, the line-up is quite stunning.
to watch the pro-am, it will be streamed on Peacock from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. EDT on Monday and Tuesday, with a replay shown on Golf Channel from 7 p.m.-12:30 a..m. each night.
