Black Golfers Accuse L.A. County of Discrimination in Golf Management Hiring, Calling For Full Audit

Angelique Johnson, founder and CEO of Angelique on the Links, joined with other African American golfers in Los Angeles to publicly accuse Los Angeles County officials of discrimination in hiring and promoting Black professionals into management positions within the county’s golf division.

The allegations were announced ahead of a scheduled press conference on May 8, 2026, at 10AM at the entrance of Maggie Hathaway Golf Course in South Los Angeles. The event was streamed live on Johnson’s Facebook page.

Johnson and Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson said African Americans remain largely absent from top management positions in the L.A. County Golf Division despite repeated public commitments by county leaders to diversity and inclusion.

The group pointed specifically to the lack of Black management representation at the Maggie Hathaway Golf Course, which was named in honor of pioneering Black golfer Maggie Hathaway.

Johnson and Hutchinson criticized what they described as a longstanding pattern of exclusion within the county golf system.

“Los Angeles County Supervisors pay lots of lip service to diversity and inclusion but they have failed miserably when it comes to hire, promote and recruit African Americans into management posts in the L.A. County Golf Division,” the two leaders said in a joint statement.

They added that the situation was “especially glaring and insulting” at the South Los Angeles golf course named after Hathaway, a respected figure in Black golf history.

The organizations are demanding a full audit of management hiring and promotion practices within the county golf division. They are also calling on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to take immediate action to address what they describe as discriminatory practices in filling golf management positions.
