From golf to track, from skeleton to voice-over acting, Sports Illustrated took a close look at Andia Winslow, an athletic chameleon who uses her confidence and curiosity to stay fit and inspire others. The feature on Andia, written by SI contributor Madelyne Woods, is part of the Sports Illustrated and Empower Onyx spotlight of the diverse journeys of Black women across sports—from the veteran athletes, to up-and-coming stars, coaches, executives and more—in the series, Elle-evate: 100 Influential Black Women in Sports.
Defining Andia Winslow
Have one conversation with Andia Winslow, and the first thing you’ll understand is that she’s someone who finds monotony torturous. Ask her to define herself and the response is a long list, rather than just one word: an athlete, an activist, an artist, a creator, a filmmaker and an actor who doesn’t believe in limiting herself to one noun because she legitimately is all of those nouns. But, if you pin her down, she’ll tell you a secret: She’s an adventurer. “If I had a six-word memoir, it’d read: ‘The adventure will be worth it!’ ”
In 2000 while attending Yale University, Winslow made history when she became the first Black woman to compete in varsity golf in the Ivy League. From there, she went on to play at the national level and later, she became just the fourth Black woman to play in LPGA tour events.
Winslow didn’t perform well on tour, and she describes some of her experiences playing golf as “unsavory.” But she also confides that those encounters made her stronger and fearless. Some may say Winslow’s golf career was a failure, but she feels fortunate for the opportunity to play professionally because the game helped her identify her superpower: insatiable curiosity.
Her confidence and curiosity have always kept Winslow chasing new goals. After playing on tour, she transitioned to track and field and trained as a sprinter, and later as a developmental skeleton racer ahead of the 2014 Sochi Games. She’s also a certified trainer and has served as a golf instructor. As a voice-over actor, she was commissioned to voice Nike’s commercial celebrating the U.S. women’s national team’s World Cup title in ’19. As an on-camera actor, she is starring in the upcoming TV series reboot of the classic baseball movie, A League of Their Own.
Friends and family say she’s always been this way. Winslow spent her youth vaulting from sport to sport: swimming, running, hiking, kayaking and golfing. The activity didn’t matter, as long as she was moving. She says even as a kid she was intrigued by golf. For her, it was the eternal challenge, the game that can never be conquered.
“As a pro athlete and filmmaker, I’ve always been inspired by movement,” she says. Her parents often teased her about her constant adventures but also encouraged her to explore and change the game, somehow knowing it would lead her to one day make her mark on the world.
As a sports and fitness professional, Winslow has won an Emmy, a Telly Award and a Society of Voice Arts award for her viral fitness films and voice acting work. But she says she’s especially proud of her activism in changing the game of golf to become more inclusive.
Winslow takes her responsibility as an ambassador of the game seriously and works every day to grow the game in diverse communities. She’s partnered with youth organizations such as the Bill Dickey Scholarship Association, which has provided more than $5.4 million in college scholarships to golfers of color, and The First Tee, which introduces golf and life lessons to youth, among others. She’s also worked with the Executive Women’s Golf Association, which introduces businesswomen to the game for professional development and networking opportunities.
As for women who’d like to compete professionally, Winslow says it’s definitely not easy, but the journey is character building. She advises any woman who wants to pursue a pro golf career to first identify what about the game sparks her curiosity. What makes it intriguing or challenging? The rest is as simple: Study the game, train like you mean it, exhaust all possible resources and play one shot at a time.

Looking fit and healthy 86-year old pro golfer Gary Player jogged like a 30-year old on Sunday at this past weekend’s PNC Championship. Holding his own, Gary was coming off the par 3, 12th hole when he whizzed by the crowd. And you should have seen him go!
Many may recall that Gary was personally chosen by the late Charlie Sifford to conduct the introduction of Sifford’s World Golf Hall of Fame induction in 2004.
Gary also invited the recently passed golf legend Lee Elder to his South Africa homeland to play and lobby against apartheid in a charity golf tournament back in 1971. We also are aware of Gary’s long-time relationship and support of his caddie Alfred “Rabbit” Dyer who passed in 2019. Rabbit caddied for Gary for 20 years.
Well, keep it moving forward Gary. You’re looking good!

The Woods family, Tiger and Charlie, sailed into second place at the finish of the PNC Championship. The event was the first time that Tiger has competed since injuring his leg in the February car crash.
12-year-old Charlie, Tiger’s son, made an outstanding duo in the $1 million PNC Championship, held at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Orlando in Grande Lakes, Florida. The two-person, 36-hole competition partnered some of golf’s best champions with their family members.
Winning the tournament was John Daly and his son John Daly II. The duo finished at 27 under par, two strokes ahead of the Woods.

The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 4Matic, redesigned in 2020, has no significant changes for the 2022 model year. However, the GLS is the largest vehicle by Mercedes and one of the most luxurious and expensive large 3-row luxury SUVs available.
The GLS, which replaced the Mercedes GL Class, is an SUV version of the S-Class sedan. I had the luxury of driving the entry-level GLS 450 4Matic for a week. It came with a long list of luxury and safety features, an improved air suspension, and gas/electric engines power it.
Models/Pricing: All models in Mercedes-Benz 2021 GLS-class include the entry-level GLS 450 4Matic ($77,200 MSRP), the GLS 580 4Matic ($100K), the Mercedes AMG GLS 63 ($135K), and the Mercedes Maybach GLS 600 ($165K).
Power/Performance: All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard on all GLS models, powered by a range of turbocharged inline eights and six-cylinder engines. A 48-volt electric battery gives it a smoother and more powerful performance. In addition, they all come with advanced air suspension and nine-speed automatic transmission.
The GLS 450 generates 362 horsepower and 184-lb torque from an inline six-cylinder and the 48-volt electric system with a built-in starter-generator that acts as a mild hybrid. The GLS 580 delivers 483 horsepower from a twin-turbo eight-cylinder engine and the EQ system.
Fuel Economy: The GLS 450 averages 20 city/24 highway mpg. The GLS 580 gets 16 city/21 highway mpg. The Mercedes Maybach GLS 600 returns 15 city/19 highway, while the high-performance AMG GLS 63 gets 14 city/18 highway mpg.
Despite its size, the GLS 450 is agile and offers a comfortable ride. In addition, Mercedes offers an optional new system called E-Active Control that uses cameras to scan for bumps and automatically adjusts the suspension.
All models come with large 12.3-inch digital displays for infotainment, iPhone virtual assistant, Apple CarPlay, and Android integration. Navigation and onboard Wi-Fi are standard, as well as a 13-speaker Burmester Surround Sound stereo system. A 26-speaker system is optional.
Safety: GLS models come equipped with most of the latest security and driver-assist tech, including automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, land-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and a semi-autonomous driving mode.
