Banking and Currency
Currency
Ghana Cedi (GHS; symbol ¢) = 100 Ghana pesewas. Notes are in denominations of ¢50, 20, 10, 5 and 1. Coins are in denominations of ¢1 and 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 pesewas.
The import of local currency is limited to the amount previously taken out of the country and declared. The import of foreign currency is unlimited, but must be declared upon arrival. The export of local currency is limited to ¢1,000. The export of foreign currency is limited to US$5,000 or equivalent. None of this is likely to have any practical implications for tourists.
The exchange rate system has been liberalized and foreign currency is freely available through authorized dealers including banks and foreign exchange bureaus. The US dollar is the most widely recognized currency, and smaller bills often fetch a poor rate compared with US$50 or US$100 bills.

Banking
Banking hours: Monday-Friday 08h30-16h00; some banks also open Sat 08h00-12h00.
Credit and debit cards are accepted by some leading hotels, restaurants, banks, businesses and upmarket shops in Accra, but are seldom accepted elsewhere in the country, and fraud is quite common. In large urban areas such as Accra and Kumasi, a safer bet is to draw local currency from one of the many ATMs that accept international credit cards. By far the most widely accepted type of card is Visa. MasterCard is also accepted at some outlets, but other brands, including American Express and Diners Club, are near useless in Ghana.
In large urban areas such as Accra and Kumasi, ATMs accepting international Visa cards (and occasionally MasterCard) are common.
Travelers checks are close to useless in Ghana. One of the few places that will exchange them is the head office of Barclays Bank in Accra and Takoradi, but it seems likely this facility will eventually close too.
Immunizations: Look at Travel.State.Gov for complete details on Passport/Visa and Vaccinations.

Communicating While Abroad Through WhatsAPP
DOWNLOAD WhatsApp before you leave the USA for easy WiFi use in communicating with the tour group, friends and family back home during your international travel. This application is available for Android and IOS.
Travel, Transport and Getting Around
UBER is a travel option in Ghana. See rates HERE
The speed limit is 50kph (31mph) in towns and 80kph (50mph) outside of towns. Seat belts are compulsory and drunk driving is illegal. A UK driving license is theoretically valid for 90 days, but you are less likely to be queried by bribe-seeking officials if you carry an International Driving Permit.
Taxis are available throughout Ghana.
Accra has extensive bus and taxi services operated by the private sector. There is an abundance of taxis in the towns. Prices are reasonable. Drivers do not generally expect tips. Other ways of getting around, for the more adventurous traveler, are tro-tros (mini-buses), which are usually far less comfortable than taxis.
Food, Drink and Cuisine Advice
Water sources should generally be regarded as being potentially contaminated, and water used for drinking, brushing teeth or making ice should have first been boiled or otherwise sterilized. Inexpensive sachets and bottles of purified water are readily available throughout the country. Milk is unpasteurized and should be boiled. Powdered or tinned milk is available and is advised. Avoid dairy products that are likely to have been made from unboiled milk. Only eat well-cooked meat and fish. Vegetables should be cooked and fruit peeled.
International food is available in most large hotels and many restaurants serve a range of local traditional foods. In Accra, there are also restaurants serving Middle Eastern, Indian, Southeast Asian, French and pretty much every other international cuisine you can think of. The country’s largest concentration of eateries lies along and around the main drag through Osu – known locally as Oxford Street – where you could literally eat somewhere different every night for a month. Fast food outlets are also well represented in upmarket areas such as Osu and the Accra Mall.
Outside of Accra, a fair selection of cuisines is represented in the likes of Kumasi, Takoradi, Tema, Cape Coast, and Elmina. The most popular international cuisine is Chinese, which seems to find its way onto even the most unimaginative hotel restaurant menus.
Alternatively, wherever you are in Ghana, local food can be eaten in small restaurants known as ‘chop bars’, where you will generally be served with rice or a local staple together with a portion of meat or vegetable stew. Almost as ubiquitous (except in a few small and very Islamic settlements in the north) are small local bars known endearingly as ‘spots’. These usually serve inexpensive chilled lager-style beers in 750ml bottles (brands include Guder, Bell and Club, all with an alcohol level of around 5%) as well as inexpensive draught beer (called bubra) in the south.
Tipping is permitted; it is not usually included in the bill.
Climate and Weather
The best time to visit Ghana is between November – March when there is little to no rainfall, and every part of the country is easily accessible.
Ghana has a typically tropical climate thanks to its proximity to the equator and low elevations – the entire country lies below 1,000m (3300ft). Daytime temperatures are high throughout the year, approaching or surpassing 30°C (86°F) on most days, and humidity is also very high, especially along the coast. Temperatures tend to drop to around 20°C (68°F) drop at night, more noticeably in the relatively dry north than the humid south. The most temperate part of Ghana is the highlands area flanking the Volta Basin, which is often pleasantly cool after dusk.
There are two rainy seasons: from March to July and from September to October. Rainfall is highest in the south, with some areas receiving in excess of 2,000mm each year, but the drier north more typically receives about 800mm annually. The capital Accra, together with the coast running east to Togo and Benin, lies within the Dahomey Gap, a tract of savannah that receives relatively little rain and divides the Upper Guinean forests (running westward from central Ghana) from the Lower Guinean forests (running southward from Nigeria southward to the Congo). A noteworthy climatic phenomenon is the Harmattan winds, which blow in from the northeast from December to March, bringing dust from the Sahara and reducing visibility to as little as 1km (0.6 miles).
Clothing and Dress Recommendations What To Pack
Clothing and Dress Recommendations
Light and loose is the way to go in this humid tropical climate. Bring light trousers or skirts made of a natural fabric such as cotton, combined with a stash of cotton T-shirts, and plenty of socks and underwear, also ideally must be made from natural fabrics to prevent fungal infections. Ghanaians are relatively relaxed about dress codes, but women should keep their shoulders covered and wear a skirt below the knees in the predominantly Muslim north. One sweater or sweatshirt should be adequate, since night time temperatures are seldom chilly. As for footwear, a good pair of walking shoes with solid ankle support is a must, but you’ll also want sandals. If you forget anything, don’t stress: there is a massive used-clothing industry in Ghana, and having new clothes made from local fabrics is quick and affordable.
Electricity and Plug Standards
For the most part, there are two types of electrical sockets (outlets) used in Ghana: the “Type G ” British BS-1363 and the “Type D” Indian (old British BS-546 5 amp “small”) sockets. If your appliance’s plug doesn’t match the shape of these sockets, you will need a travel plug adapter in order to plug in. Travel plug adapters simply change the shape of your appliance’s plug to match whatever type of socket you need to plug into. If it’s crucial to be able to plug in no matter what, bring an adapter for both types.
Electrical sockets (outlets) in Ghana usually supply electricity at between 220 and 240 volts AC. If you’re plugging in an appliance that was built for 220-240 volt electrical input, or an appliance that is compatible with multiple voltages, then an adapter is all you need. If your appliance is not compatible with 220-240 electrical output, a voltage converter will be necessary.

June 1, 2021
(Washington, D.C.) – The NAACP is now accepting applications for more than $800,000 in scholarships for Black high school seniors and college students.
Nurturing the next generation of activists and community leaders starts with an investment in their education. Each year the association offers need-based and merit scholarships as part of the NAACP – Scholars and Professionals: Internships, Ready Youth and Employment (N-SPIRE) program. This year, 170 awards range from $3,000 to $15,000 thanks to the support of various donors, including Dark & Lovely, Vans, and SmileDirectClub.
Applications will be reviewed and scored by the N-SPIRE Committee, NAACP leaders who volunteer their time to read applications, review transcripts, and select recipients for approval.
“Across all racial groups, Black borrowers hold the most student loan debt despite also being consistently underserved by postsecondary institutions,” said NAACP Chief Strategy Officer, Yumeka Rushing. “The increasing costs to obtain a degree can keep college out of reach for many students. These scholarships aim to make college more affordable so that students are able to securely step into their futures.”
The scholarship portal will close on June 18 at 6 p.m. ET. Students will be notified of award on August 9.

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (May 31, 2021) – Marcus Byrd of Nashville shot a bogey-free 64 to take the first-round lead at APGA Tour New Orleans Monday, securing a four-shot cushion over the circuit’s top players heading into Tuesday’s final round at TPC Louisiana.
Byrd’s eight-under round included birdies on three of the par fives as he navigated the 7,400-yard Pete Dye layout smartly, capping his eye-opening round with a four on the 585-yard, par-5 18th hole. The 2018 Conference USA Player of the Year for Middle Tennessee State is seeking his first APGA Tour title in just his sixth event after turning pro in October.
“The putter got hot,” stated Byrd, who played in the 2020 U.S. Amateur on the strength of his World Amateur Golf Ranking earned during his college years. “I’ve worked hard to get into this position and it’s good to be here, for sure.” A product of the PGA TOUR’S First Tee of Greater Washington (D.C.), Byrd won the 2013 Georgia State Junior Championship as part of a stellar junior, high school and college career. “Today was a good day, but I’m still learning some things,” he concluded.

Willie Mack, the APGA Tour star who has played two PGA TOUR events this year as a sponsor exemption, heads a group of four players in second place at four-under 68. Michael Herrera of Moreno Valley, California, winner of the season’s first two events, is also at four-under with Rafa Guerrero Lauria of Pompano Beach, Florida, and Wyatt Worthington of Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Andrew Fernandes of Lakewood, Ohio, and Marcus Manley of Kissimmee, Florida, are another stroke back at three-under as the 50-player field competed in mild conditions.
Ryan Alford, the Shreveport and Louisiana Tech standout who won the last two APGA Tour events, leads a group of five more players – Joseph Dent of Tampa, Tommy Schaff of Ridgeland, South Carolina, Davin White of Locust Grove, Georgia and Landon Lyons of Baton Rouge — at two-under 70.
Byrd started the week in seventh place in the Lexus Cup Point Standings on the strength of top-tier finishes in all five season-long bonus pool events this year. His top previous finish was runner-up in APGA Tour Scottsdale at TPC Scottsdale April 20. Following APGA Tour New Orleans, the Lexus Cup Point Standings battle continues July 18-20 at APGA Tour Deere Run at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois.
Tuesday’s final round will determine the winner of the $7,500 first-place prize from a purse of $25,000. The tournament is being played under social-distancing and health/safety guidelines in conjunction with regional authorities.

Dr. Jeffrey Sammons Announced as Chief Historical Consultant for the Bermuda Government Golf Courses and The Bermuda PGA

June 1, 2021 | BY AAGD STAFF
Dr. Jeffrey Sammons was recently announced as the Chief Historical Consultant for the Bermuda Government Golf Courses and The Bermuda PGA.
“We are deeply indebted to Dr. Jeffery Sammons, Professor of History at New York, whose groundbreaking research of Louis Rafael ‘Kid’ Corbin continues to unearth many hidden truths about public golf and its role globally through Bermuda to break down deliberate barriers through the practice of diversity and inclusion,” said a spokesperson for the Bermuda Government.
In recognition of the 70th anniversary of the relationship between the Devonshire Golf Links and Ocean View Golf Club, a special ‘Lunch & Play’ package is being offered.

Golf Course Chairman MP Kim Swan said, “It is a concept I incorporated at St George’s Golf Club to support our young concessionaire back in the 1980s, but in researching the history of our public golf courses, I found a 1933 advertisement where Louis Rafael ‘Kid’ Corbin promoted a similar ‘Lunch & Play’ package.
$70 Lunch & Play Package At Ocean View
“The $70 package includes one green fee with golf cart, three experienced golf balls, tees, and lunch.”
“As the Bermuda Government recognize the anniversary of the 70 year relationship which brought the Devonshire Golf Links into the hands of the membership of Ocean View Golf Club in 1950, it is in important to appreciate that the former Devonshire Golf Links has been a public golf course for a century now,” said a Bermuda government spokesman.
“Kasey Smith and Government Trustees forge new concession agreement. Partners Kacey Smith and ‘Jalen Steede trading as ‘Clubhouse 25’ was named in honor of the first 25 members of Ocean View Golf Club.”
The spokesperson said, “Ocean View is an iconic Bermuda public facility, the standard bearer for diversity and inclusion for a century. We are looking forward to honoring its most relevant existence and those whose work made it happen by supporting tangible initiatives to grow the game of golf for all.
Trustee Denton Outerbridge, who is the Historical Committee Team Leader, said, “We are proud to welcome this energetic young team to Ocean View Golf Course as our new Restaurant and Bar Concessionaires.
“We are especially pleased that they are celebrating the rich legacy of Ocean View Golf Club which coincides with our emphasis to pay homage to our forefathers with pictures and descriptions of our significant contribution to the social evolution in Bermuda by being a facility that has always practiced diversity.”

The spokesperson said, “Steven Lambert, Acting Manager, announced that the Trustees have approved a special daily golf package to help promote the new restaurant. We will be encouraging all of our patrons to make some to relax at Ocean View.”
“I congratulate the team of MP Jason Wade [OV Team Leader], Denton Outerbrdge, Deputy Chairman Vincent Hollinsid and Mr. Steven Lambert, Acting Manager of Government Golf Courses, for their work making this restaurant and bar concession a reality.“

Will Free Golf offerings help break down barriers? Developer Chris Harris puts it to the test

May 31, 2021 | BY AAGD STAFF
In Kansas City, Mo., learning and playing golf just became a little more enticing thanks to the innovation of local resident Chris Harris. Instead of standing idly by and watching the dilapidated houses in ill repair congest the neighborhood, Harris started investing in them, following in his fathers footsteps, buying up entire blocks of properties and turning the eye-sore buildings into beautiful green spaces.
This was the start of a dream for Harris in achieving his goal to bring the golf experience to neighborhoods that never had access before. The sprawling green spaces which he created included a basketball court, a playground and lovely flower beds and more, according to ClubandResortBusiness.com. The golf course he created is free a charming site to the urban are, features nine tee boxes across three greens and offers equipment free for use.
But the redesign of the space at Harris Park in Kansas City, Mo. is generating much more than exposure to the game, it’s actually breaking down barriers of racial segregation in the city’s urban setting.

When Chris Harris first laid the groundwork for his dream of a golf course in a once-blighted section of Kansas City’s Ivanhoe neighborhood, he started out with a corner of property near his house, the Kansas City Star reported. The progress that he attained was amazing, because now, after years of building and fundraising, Harris successfully bought up the entire block.
C+RB reported on the project in May 2019. In the last phase of the construction, in 2020, Harris broke grown near the south end of the golf course and created a 30-by-30-ft. building which was configured for bathrooms and storage space, the Star reported. Continuing at exponential progress, Harris and others are proud of their work and say they are transforming the ‘feel and potential’ of the whole neighborhood. The positive change will bring more opportunity to area dwellers and also be reflected in the overall development of the area with an increase in home prices and property values.
HOW IT ALL STARTED
Harris Park, according to The Star, began over several years with the development of the golf course. Harris even tore down his own home in the middle of the block and secured a position at a nearby golf course. This way, he could increase his knowledge while gaining practical work experience. Impressed by his concept, he gained the support of the PGA.
Harris thinks big believes that having the golf course in the neighborhood is expanding people’s expectations of who the sport is for and reducing hesitancy about what it costs to learn, The Star reported. As a youngster, Harris showed interest in golf but that quickly waned without access or knowing if there was even a place where he would be welcome.
I an interview with C+RB Harris said, “It’s like a stereotype or a boundary that I’m trying to break of saying ‘Hey this is not private, this is public and you can come on out and play.’”
In his perspective, The Star reported that Harris sees the golf course in having more than just one purpose, but several. He sees the course as being accessible to anyone who ‘wants to learn’ and with the development comes the upside of gaining a neighborhood with attractive amenities. His development is driving progress throughout the urban area and growing interest and participation in golf at the same time.
Consider that just within the last year, area home values have increased by 8.6%, according to Greg Fitch, owner of Fitch Appraisals, The Star reported. The change has impacted homes that are within a one-mile radius of the area near the park, where selling prices have soared to more than $220,000.
Without a doubt, Harris’ leap into making golf more accessible to everyone is part of his ongoing community development, with the added benefit of providing use of the course and the equipment for free to anyone who’s interested. And, that now counts into the hundreds of people who have stopped by to enjoy the course– youth, adults, organizations, and others.
When people come to the neighborhood, they leave with a different perspective, Harris told The Star. And it’s given local residents a sense of pride.
According to Harris, “We don’t have to go other places, we can have nice things right here at home.”

Apartheid Museum
The Apartheid Museum opened in 2001 and is acknowledged as the pre-eminent museum in the world dealing with 20th century South Africa, at the heart of which is the apartheid story.
The Apartheid Museum, the first of its kind, illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid.
An architectural consortium, comprising several leading architectural firms, conceptualised the design of the building on a seven-hectare stand. The museum is a superb example of design, space and landscape offering the international community a unique South African experience.
The exhibits have been assembled and organised by a multi-disciplinary team of curators, film-makers, historians and designers. They include provocative film footage, photographs, text panels and artefacts illustrating the events and human stories that are part of the epic saga, known as apartheid.
A series of 22 individual exhibition areas takes the visitor through a dramatic emotional journey that tells a story of a state-sanctioned system based on racial discrimination and the struggle of the majority to overthrow this tyranny.
For anyone wanting to understand and experience what apartheid South Africa was really like, a visit to the Apartheid Museum is fundamental.

Under the leadership of Smith and APGA Tour CEO Ken Bentley, the tour has forged partnerships with the PGA TOUR, PGA of America, Farmers Insurance, Lexus and other organizations to dramatically expand its tournaments and programs, greatly increasing its reach and impact around the country.
Among the attendees was Jim Dent, the former PGA TOUR player who won 12 tournaments on the PGA TOUR Champions between 1989 and 1998. Also in attendance were a number of APGA Tour members who are playing the circuit of 13 events with $350,000 in prize money this year.
The AAGHOF aims to celebrate and honor the history and achievements of African Americans in the game of golf. AAGHOF officials work to establish a place where a history of African Americans in golf can be shown for the world to see and to honor those African Americans who have contributed and continue to contribute to golf and their communities. They also work to provide an interactive educational learning experiences for golfers of all ages.
Ryan Alford Seeks 3rd Straight Victory on Diversity-Focused Tour

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (May 27, 2021) – Ryan Alford will try to win his third tournament in a row in familiar surroundings when the APGA Tour returns to action May 31-June 2 for the eighth event of the season, APGA Tour New Orleans, at TPC Louisiana, the prominent PGA TOUR-owned layout designed by Pete Dye.
TPC Louisiana (7,400-yard, par 72), which annually hosts the PGA TOUR’s Zurich Classic, is the fourth Tournament Players Club (TPC) course that the APGA Tour has played so far this year. The tournament will be conducted under social-distancing and health/safety guidelines in conjunction with regional authorities. The 36-hole event (June 1-2) offers a $25,000 purse.
Alford, the 24-year-old from Shreveport, is the newest sensation on the APGA Tour, which has become a force in the drive to bring greater diversity to the sport of golf.
A regular practice partner and high school teammate of PGA TOUR Pro Sam Burns, Alford won APGA Tour Scottsdale on April 20 and then emerged victorious at APGA Tour Louisville last week. He will contend with another loaded field, including PGA TOUR-tested players, 2021 tournament winners and five of the top collegiate golfers from this spring season. Willie Mack, Kamaiu Johnson and Kevin Hall, all of whom teed off in PGA TOUR events earlier this year, are in the field along with Landon Lyons, Jarred Garcia, Michael Herrera and Rovonta Young, all winners of APGA Tour events in 2021.
As the second half of the season begins, Alford leads the Lexus Cup Point Standings with 1200 points, ahead of Young (951) and Lyons (874). Garcia (775) and Johnson (766) stand in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Mack is in sixth (737) and Marcus Byrd stands in seventh place with 667 points. The 2020 Lexus Cup Point Standings winner, Tim O’Neal, is in eighth place with 569 points. Players earn 600 points for a tournament victory.
Johnson, Mack and Hall have combined for 11 recent/upcoming starts in PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour events since January. They received substantial media coverage and social media exposure along the way, elevating awareness of the APGA Tour and its mission of bringing greater diversity to the sport. Following New Orleans, the APGA Tour travels to Silvis, Illinois for APGA Tour Deere Run at TPC Deere Run July 18-20

THE JOHN SHIPPEN Achievement Scholarship was created in honor of John Shippen, Jr., the first American-born and the first Black golf professional. Fifteen $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to current students of color (high school junior through graduate student status) who have demonstrated leadership and service with a commitment to inclusion and diversity efforts on campus and in the community. THE JOHN SHIPPEN Achievement Scholarship is powered by the McClendon Foundation, whose mission is to empower and cultivate minority students who aspire to be principled leaders in athletics. To apply, and for eligibility requirements, please visit www.thejohnshippen.com.

All Sports Business Summit attendees will be eligible to apply for internship positions based on their qualifications.
“THE JOHN SHIPPEN Sports Business Summit is a groundbreaking event that will provide a tremendous wealth of knowledge for students of color as they seek to obtain careers in the sports business world,” said Ebony Walls, Director of Philanthropy and Partnerships for Intersport. “In addition to the Summit, we also developed the Achievement Scholarship and Internship programs to immediately impact students in a positive way, by providing financial assistance and exposure to experience that could lead directly to future career opportunities. These opportunities wouldn’t be possible without our corporate partners, specifically Rocket Mortgage and Trion Solutions, the first two companies to put their support behind this initiative.”
Intersport collaborated with Woods and Watts Effect to design THE JOHN SHIPPEN as a vehicle to fundamentally increase diversity in golf and to create opportunities for young men and women of color in sports on a national scale.
The sport of golf is an $84 billion industry with more than two million golf-related jobs. However, less than one percent of PGA of America club professionals are Black, and only four current PGA TOUR players are Black. These statistics do not reflect a lack of talented Black golfers – they reflect limited access and resources.
Historical barriers for Black golfers include: affordable and consistent access to championship courses; quality golf equipment; top-rated swing coaches; sponsorship; and access to capital for housing and travel.
Rocket Mortgage is the presenting partner of THE JOHN SHIPPEN. National partners include: Trion Solutions, the nation’s largest minority-owned professional employer organization; DOW; The Children’s Foundation; Cooper Tires; CDW; Optum and MasterCard.

ABOUT ‘THE JOHN SHIPPEN’
Intersport, in partnership with Rocket Mortgage and in collaboration with Woods and Watts Effect, announced earlier this year the launch of a new national golf event: ‘THE JOHN SHIPPEN’ to identify historical barriers and expand Black representation in the sport of golf. The National Invitational will be held at Detroit Golf Club June 27-28, with a one-hour TV special about THE JOHN SHIPPEN airing on CBS leading into final-round coverage of the Rocket Mortgage Classic on Sunday, July 4.
THE JOHN SHIPPEN will invite the nation’s top amateur and professional Black golfers to provide a platform for heightened opportunities and recognition within the sport.
The men’s division will be individual stroke play, and the winner will receive an exemption into the PGA TOUR’s Rocket Mortgage Classic (July 1-4). To ensure that any financial barriers are removed, THE JOHN SHIPPEN will cover all travel costs (airfare and hotel) for participating players.
THE JOHN SHIPPEN was also created to address the lack of Black representation in business and leadership roles in golf and across professional sports. To create an avenue for awareness and opportunities, THE JOHN SHIPPEN Sports Business Summit for high school and college students will be held virtually June 29-30. Summit attendees will be given the opportunity to apply for paid internships and scholarships from sponsors, organizations and foundations within and beyond the sports industry.
The event, designed to showcase Black collegiate and professional golfers, is named after John Shippen, Jr., who was the first American-born golf professional and also the country’s first Black golf professional. Shippen was bestowed PGA of America membership posthumously in 2009.
ABOUT JOHN SHIPPEN, JR.
John Shippen, Jr. first worked in golf as a caddie at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York, and after playing in his first of six U.S. Opens in 1896, was hired as the golf professional at the Maidstone Club in East Hampton, New York later that year.
Shippen later worked as a golf professional at Aronimink Golf Club near Philadelphia and spent the majority of his working life at Shady Rest Golf Course in Scotch Plains, New Jersey – the first African-American owned and operated golf club in the United States – where he served from 1924-1960.
The John Shippen Memorial Golf Foundation was founded in 1995 by Thurman and Ruby Simmons in Scotch Plains. They began studying his legacy in 1988 and have spent more than 30 years elevating Shippen’s name and recognizing his place in American history. In addition to funding paid internship and scholarship opportunities, a portion of the proceeds from THE JOHN SHIPPEN will be donated to The John Shippen Memorial Golf Foundation.
