Michael Jordan’s Grove XXIII Invite-Only golf course, on your bucket list?
BY AAGE STAFF
MAY 4, 2020 — How would you feel if you invested millions of dollars into building your own golf course only to have any-and-everybody tromping all over on it? Well, firstly, it would erode any exclusivity that you may have planned for your course, and secondly, it may lose its all-important prestige appeal.
In Fall 2019, former NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan (MJ) opened his uber-exclusive Grove XXIII golf course in Hobe Sound, Florida (near Jupiter). The Roman numeral (XXIII) in the course’s name represents Jordan’s jersey number which he wore while playing with the Chicago Bulls. Now, retired, Jordan has taken the full leap from basketball into golf.

A lover of the golf game for years, MJ has taken his passion for the sport to a whole other level, and finally, his long-anticipated 226-acre project is complete. And it came out beautifully with an ingenious double-helix layout. The course can be played in four nine + nine combinations, or played as shorter three- to six-hole loops. Don Wolfe, principal at NBWW was awarded the design contract. Architect, Bobby Weed.
The vastness of the property with its sandy, grass-covered spaces between the holes is likened to the same venue that showcases the US Open on Long Island (NY). But here, sitting on a former citrus grove, the bottom line is that MJ can invite whomever he wishes to come and play his prestigious course. This means the basketball billionaire can enjoy rounds with golfers from all over the world, many who are much better than himself. Worth a reportedly $1.9 billion, MJ not only loves a good golf game, even more, loves betting when he plays it.
Although he is not the sole owner—but a majority owner—on January 14, 2020, Jordan is listed as Director on the Florida Not For-profit Corporation Annual Report filed with the Secretary of State. The Grove XXIII is private and carries an ‘invite-only’ policy. This means that not just anyone can simply call up and book a tee time at the course.
Is your name on the list?
In February, NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin played Grove XXIII alongside PGA Tour champion Rickie Fowler and former NASCAR driver Michael Waltrip. Names like these, individuals of wealth and privilege love to play golf. Every facet of the game speaks to those who are titans of good fortune, from Presidents of the United States to corporate leaders, movie/music moguls, celebrities, socialites, and other iconic influencers.
A forum posting on golfwrx.com read, “I played it Feb 3rd. First day the clubhouse was open. MJ was there. Pro Shop is amazing. Course won’t be in any top 100 lists but it will be a blast to play. Many different routings. Wind will be its defense. The practice area is out of this world. They thought of everything. Can’t imagine being a member there. The vibe will be like no other place on the planet.” The Grove XXIII is located at 2323 SE Blackcat Way, Hobe Sound, FL 33455.
Since its inception, Grove XXIII was predestined to be a haven beyond the reach of a majority of average golfers. Jordan’s private course and all of its luxurious amenities will be a welcome respite for his ‘special guests’ and higher-income bracket individuals. At last count, there were only 75 members to enjoy the main clubhouse which consists of 15,000 sf of men’s and women’s lockers, indoor and outdoor lounge areas, a retail shop and kitchen/dining facilities.
RELATED: Michael Jordan’s Golf Course Grove XXIII to Open in 2019
MJ has succeeded in his goal of building a lavish golf course. This once young man from Chicago who made it big in the NBA, gained exposure to the finer things in life, and now has his Grove XXIII golf course. It must be amazing to him. Some may wonder if he will pass along any privileges to those who cannot afford the opulence of a Grove XXIII membership. Or, will the ocean-breeze swept course simply be another jewel in his cap of mega-material wealth, to be flaunted and swooned over? As one of the most competitive athletes of all time, MJ’s gem course is now one of the most exclusive golf courses in the world, and if it’s on your bucket, list it will probably stay there.

May 1, 2020 — Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, Muhammad Ali truly was “The Greatest.” The first fighter to win the world heavyweight championship on three separate occasions, Ali successfully defended this prominent title 19 times. The late boxer, who was also a philanthropist and social activist, and Olympic gold medalist, died on June 3, 2016. Today he is still regarded as one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century.
Pair that with an exclusive Golf Digest interview conducted by English professional golfer Henni Zuel with Tiger Woods and the discussion about “greatness” heats up. Woods speaks his mind about his love for sports, and his unforgettable encounter with Muhammad Ali, along with recollections of hanging out with his friend NBA legend Micheal Jordan, and trash talk with golf rival Phil Mickelson, and others. Sa’mya Wilson Awarded $25k College Tuition Support by Youth On Course
BY AAGD STAFF
APRIL 30, 2020
Sa’mya Wilson is counting her blessings ($25,000 of them) as one of 19 Students awarded college tuition support this year by Youth On Course. The 18-year-old, Oakland, Calif., resident attends Holy Names High School and is one of only three African Americans who obtained the scholarship. The funds will come in handy for her needs at Smith College in Northhampton, Massachusetts, where she plans to attend in the Fall.
“I am currently undecided in my major, as Smith is a liberal arts college, and I will not declare a major until my sophomore year. I will use my award to pay off college loans, tuition costs, and the cost of a laptop,” she says, with a high school GPA at 3.78 unweighted and 4.02 weighted.
Sa’mya has been playing on the high school golf team for about four years. Yet, when she first started playing she says, “I thought that golf would be easy. As I continued to play, I found out that it is indeed a mental game. I have had many “breakthrough” moments in golf where I learned how to advance my skills.”
An individual who enjoys the outdoors, Sa’mya says, “I feel as if I’ve had a long journey with golf. My most significant win is not one against any other golfer, but the many ‘wins’ against myself, by improving my personal best and doing better than I did in my previous game.”
Since the inception of the scholarship program in 2008, 260 Youth on Course members have been awarded with scholarships totaling close to $2 million in financial support. The current scholarship retention rate is ninety-three percent. The 2020 recipients include seven first-generation college students and will be attending the country’s most prestigious universities including the University of Chicago, Columbia University, University of Michigan, UCLA and Wake Forest University, among others. “We know how challenging the financial burden is for students pursuing higher education. Every year, our scholarships are sought out by more than 1,000 Youth on Course members who are intelligent, talented and want to continue pursuing their dreams in college, but they’re worried about the cost,” says Michael Lowe, Vice President of Programs for Youth on Course. “We, along with our scholarship donors, take pride in doing what we can to help alleviate the burden for these outstanding students and their families. The 2020 class of Youth on Course Scholars is made up of some of the brightest and most caring students in the country. We can’t wait to see what they accomplish in the future.”
Born out of the Northern California Golf Association in 2006, Youth on Course subsidizes greens fees to remove cost as a barrier to entry for potential lifetime golfers. Operating in 37 states and Canada, more than 71,000 members have played close to one million rounds of golf while the organization has helped generate over $6.8 million in tee-time revenue back to individual golf courses. Allison McInnis Heading to Wake Forest University with $15k Tuition Support by Youth On Course
BY AAGD STAFF
April 30, 2020
(PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.) – Youth on Course – the non-profit providing young people with subsidized golf, college scholarships, caddie programs and paid internships – has announced its 2020 scholarship awards granting over $252,000 in scholarships to 19 high school graduates, continuing its commitment to providing youth with access to life-changing opportunities on and off the course.
For Allison “Allie” McInnis receiving a $15,000 college scholarship will make a tremendous difference in her first-year experience at Wake Forest University this coming fall. The 17-year-old, Kennesaw, Georgia, resident attends Harrison High School and was also filled with joy upon previously receiving her Wake Forest University acceptance letter.
“I will use my scholarship earnings towards my tuition and fees at Wake Forest University,” said Allison. The private research university in Winston-Salem, North Carolina will be her home-away-from-home while she studies towards a major in Economics and International Affairs and a minor in Bioethics, Humanities, and Medicine.
“Beginning my Senior golf season I got precision fit Henry Griffith Golf Clubs, and these clubs helped my game to improve immensely and I’ve been playing for almost 2-years. Although my final high school season was cut short due to Covid-19, I look forward to playing on the Wake Forest Women’s Club Golf Team and continuing to improve in golf,” says Allison who plays at an 18 handicap.
“I live just a few minutes from Cobblestone Golf Course. Cobblestone is a YOC course, therefore, I have been able to play there very often and improve my golf game with less of a monetary burden. I would not be the player I am today without the YOC program and I am very thankful to receive this scholarship.” She also served her Junior and Senior year as Co-Captain of the Harrison High School Women’s Varsity Golf Team.
Allison gained an interest in golf during her freshman year in high school. “My mom got me a starter set of clubs, a few lessons through the ladies’ golf program at Cobblestone Golf Course close to my home and we both started with Black Girls Golf. Afterward, she tried out for her high school varsity golf team and made it.
Taking her passion for the sport of golf onto the collegiate level, Allison eagerly looks forward to the new horizon that awaits her.

In addition to subsidizing youth golf rounds, Youth on Course also facilitates college scholarships, paid internships and a caddie program.

The 2020 Range Rover Sport HSE is the athletic version of Land Rover’s Range Rover luxury SUV. In a class of its own, this review explains why the Range Rover SUV invokes the aspiration of those who associate it with luxury and status, as well as, on- and off-road performance.
First introduced in 2005, the 5th generation 2020 Range Rover Sport model which was launched in 2014, now comes with a range of gasoline, diesel, plug-in or mild-hybrid powerplants. They all ride on Land Rover’s four-wheel-drive and eight-speed automatic transmissions platform.
I had the pleasure of test driving the 2020 Range Rover Sport HSE model. However, if you are seriously considering the Range Rover Sport, there are several trims, price ranges, engines, and features to choose from.
The base model comes with a 355-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder that includes a mild-hybrid for faster acceleration and increased fuel economy. A 395-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder and two eight-cylinder engines that generate 518- and 575-horsepower are also available. The plug-in hybrid model generates 398 horses and the average fuel MPG varies depending on the engine type.
The 2020 Range Rover Sport, which has a lighter frame and improved fuel economy, includes several other additions from the previous model year. Some include a standard mild-hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, a supercharged eight-cylinder, a turbocharged six-cylinder diesel, optional third-row seating, and the high-performance SVR model. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all vehicles.
Standard safety features include a rearview camera, low-speed emergency braking, parking sensors, and lane departure assist, and warnings. Other standard and optional performance and safety technology depends on the model.
Price ranges for the 2020 Range Rover Sport start at $68,650 MSRP for the base SE model and $74,250 for the HSE. The SE and HSE can be upgraded with the optional turbodiesel engine for $750, or the plug-in hybrid for $4,750 MSRP. The plug-in hybrid combines a 2.0-liter 296 turbocharged Si4 gas engine and a high capacity 141 horsepower electric motor to deliver a total of 398-horsepower.
Other models in the Range Rover Sport lineup includes the HST for $82,950 MSRP and the high-performance HSE Dynamic for $86,500 MSRP. It has the same features as the HSE and comes with the 518-horsepower 5.0-liter supercharged eight-cylinder engine.
Range Rover Sport Autobiography Dynamic starts around $88,990 and offers a choice between three diesels, a mild-hybrid or a gasoline engine. The top-of-the-line SVR starts at $114,500 and comes with the 575 horsepower 5.0-liter supercharged eight-cylinder engine, electronic air suspension, sporty styling and a list of other luxury features.

April 29, 2020 — Stalled again, the LPGA announces that the beginning of its 2020 season will be held up for another month. This means the Tour will not begin until possibly, mid-July.
As many Tours make their concerns known about the ongoing effects of the coronavirus pandemic, The LPGA mirrors this impact on the sport and says its 2020 contentions will reopen with the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational on July 15-18 in Midland, Mich.
Commissioner Mike Whan says, “While July seems like a long way away, we are certainly aware that restarting our season in Michigan, Ohio and New Jersey will require continued improvement in the situation in each of those states.”
The Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, originally scheduled to restart the LPGA’s season on June 19-21 in Rogers, Ark., has been reset for Aug. 28-30.
Another causality, The KPMG Women’s PGA, one of the LPGA’s major championships, moves from its original playdate of June 25-28 to Oct. 8-11 in Newton Square, Pa.
The Marathon Classic originally planned to take place in Sylvania Ohio on July 9-12 in Sylvania, Ohio, has been moved to now content on July 23-26.
Commissioner Whan also said, “One thing that has become clear is that there will be no ‘opening bell’ regarding a return to safe play in this new normal of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
“To be honest, being ‘first’ has never been the goal when it comes to returning to play in this new normal. We have built a schedule that we think is as safe as possible given what we know about travel bans, testing availability, and delivering events that our sponsors and our athletes will be excited to attend.”
Needless to say, the late start of the LPGA Tour will have an effect on the revised schedule, as it will topple, notably: Meijer LPGA Classic in Grand Rapids, Mich., which had been moved to Oct. 1-4, from the original date of June. Another factor is the Pelican Women’s Championship in Belleair, Fla., which had been rescheduled to November, will shift one week later, to Nov. 19-22. Also considered in the reshuffled debacle is the Volunteers of America Classic in The Colony, Texas, will move to Dec. 3-6; CME Group Tour Championship in Naples, Fla., originally scheduled for Nov. 19-22, will move to Dec. 17-20 and will be the final event of the 2020 LPGA season.
