January 12, 2020 — Certified golf coach Addie Cobb is well-known in her Valdosta, Georgia community for her years of experience and success in providing youth golf instruction. Among the youth who benefited from Addie’s instruction is Maria Stackhouse. Today, Maria, age 25, is a professional golfer on the U.S.-based LPGA Tour. But, back then, when Maria was only 12-years old, little did the future graduate of Stanford University know that she would become a four-year All-American who would major in communications and help the Cardinals to achieve an NCAA title in 2015.
“It all comes down to having strong basic instruction and giving youth confidence in themselves,” says Addie who conducted a golf clinic in Atlanta. It was on Brown Mills Golf Course on a bright Saturday morning when Maria and her brother John participated. John went on to select football as his sport of choice, but Maria stayed the course and golf became her appendage.
“I was an invited instructor that Saturday morning and I was scheduled to demonstrate some of my golf skills and assist with teaching the members of the Browns Mills Women’s Golf Association (BMWGA),” says Addie. “By popular demand, Golf Teaching Pro, Joe Holmond, a level 3 and honorary member of the United States Golf Teachers Federation (USGTF) organized and held regular clinics there. Joe’s clinics were held especially for the BMWGA organization and the cost to participate was $35 per lady.”
That particular day, Addie recalls that Mariah and her brother were in attendance along with their parents, Ken and Sharon Stackhouse. They were joined by 35-40 other participants and 2-4 instructors. “The clinics focused on all aspects of the game, but when I participated our focus was on the short game, such as grip, posture, putting, chipping, pitching, and alignment,” recalls Addie.
During the clinic, Addie noticed that “Not only did Mariah Stackhouse stand out from the others with her early skills, but she and her brother, John, stole the show!” Shortly afterward, John was featured in a US Kids Golf TV commercial. “I saw John’s remarkable commercial several times.”
Army Lieutenant Colonel, Joe Holmond (Retired), had a long militarily and successful golf teaching careers. He was nominated for the African American Golfers Hall of Fame, but circumstances would not allow him to participate. If you need additional information about his clinics, he is the person to speak with. His contact information is 404-966-8077 cell or 770-471-8594. He said feel free to contact him.

SAN DIEGO – Tiger Woods will get his first chance at setting the all-time record for PGA TOUR wins when he tees it up at the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open. Woods has committed to play this year’s tournament, scheduled for January 22-26 at Torrey Pines Golf Course, the Century Club of San Diego announced today.
At 82 wins, Woods needs one more victory to move ahead of World Golf Hall of Famer Sam Snead as the PGA TOUR’s all-time winningest golfer. Beginning his 2020 campaign at Torrey Pines, he’ll be chasing the record in a tournament he has won seven times and on a golf course where he owns eight professional wins.
Currently No. 7 in the Official World Golf Ranking, Woods enters 2020 riding an incredible wave of momentum over the last 16 months. After being limited by back injuries to just two tournaments in the span of more than two full calendar years, Woods broke a winless stretch of more than five years when he captured his 80th career victory at the 2018 TOUR Championship. He followed that up by winning the 2019 Masters for his 15th major championship and his first major title since the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.
In October, Woods matched Snead’s all-time record of 82 career victories with his win at the ZOZO Championship near Tokyo, and his appearance at the Farmers Insurance Open will mark his first official PGA TOUR start since then. He also led the United States team to a 16-14 victory in the Presidents Cup in December at Royal Melbourne Golf Club, serving as a playing-captain and winning all three of his matches.
“The fact that Tiger will have his first opportunity to set the all-time record for PGA TOUR wins at the Farmers Insurance Open is truly fitting,” said Century Club of San Diego CEO Marty Gorsich. “Tiger has had such remarkable success here, dating back to his eighth career victory when he won this tournament for the first time in 1999. What he has done since returning from his back injuries has been great for the game of golf, and we are excited to welcome him back for a fourth consecutive year.”
Woods won the Farmers Insurance Open in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2013, and earned his 14th major championship victory in a 19-hole playoff at the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in 2008. In addition to his seven victories at the Farmers Insurance Open, the 82-time PGA TOUR winner has finished in the top 10 six other times in 18 overall appearances. He is the tournament’s all-time leading money winner, with $6,995,504 earned.
Woods joins a strong list of early commitments that currently includes 16 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings and 20 players among the top 30 in the 2019-20 PGA TOUR FedExCup points standings. There are also nine past Farmers Insurance Open winners committed (including the last 10 straight), as well as 11 players who have accounted for 33 major championship victories. San Diego products committed to the Farmers Insurance Open include Rickie Fowler, Jamie Lovemark, Phil Mickelson, Pat Perez, Xander Schauffele and J.J. Spaun.
The field is not final until the commitment deadline on Friday, Jan. 17 at the conclusion of play in that week’s tournament. Click here to view notable player commitments.
Tickets for the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open are now on sale and can be purchased at https://www.farmersinsuranceopen.com/tickets-parking/. Adult grounds tickets start at $50, with upgraded VIP tickets starting at $90. With venues selling out last year and prices increasing on January 13th, fans are encouraged to buy in advance. Discounted tickets are available for seniors, veterans, and youth 13-17. Grounds tickets are complimentary for active duty military, reservists, retired military and their dependents. Kids 12 and under are admitted free with a ticketed adult, with a maximum of four kids per adult.
In addition to attracting some of the biggest names in the sport, the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open will also feature an array of specialty food and drink offerings showcasing San Diego flavor and venues to entertain the 100,000-plus spectators who attend the four-day tournament.
Areas open to the public include the Grey Goose 19th Hole, which will feature an elevated viewing deck that provides panoramic views of the course and specialty drinks including the signature cocktail, the “Torrey Breeze.” Other public areas of interest include Funner at 15 where, fans can enjoy specialty food offerings, happy hour specials starting at 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and a DJ as part of the Post Party presented by Harrah’s Resort SoCal. Fans can also enjoy ocean and golf views while sitting at picnic tables in the Michelob ULTRA Zone.
Negril Golf Outing a Big Win for participants and Cave Valley All Age School
BY AAGD STAFF
(January 7, 2020)
The beaches and golf links in Negril, Jamaica will never be the same, following the outing that attracted an abundance of excited players to the sun-swept island.
“Thank you for attending the Negril Golf Outing on December 11-15, 2019,” says organizer Jessie Brooks who founded the tournament four years ago. “We really enjoyed hosting everyone, much fun was had by all. We had eleven ladies and nine men playing in the golf outing.”
Non-golfers, spouses, and friends also came to Negril Treehouse, a beautiful quaint beach resort, which contributed to an enjoyable weekend. Golfers to the outing arrived from destinations far-and-wide, including from London England, Nova Scotia Canada, Minneapolis area, Chicago area, Detroit area, Tampa area, St. Louis and Columbia, MO and a supporting cast from TX, FL and NY.
Winners Randi Breault and Roscoe Brown are undefeated in the two-person scramble for the past four years. They shot a score of 76, Raymond Jackson and Shawn May shot 77 and Vicki Burns and Fayneese Miller shot 78.
“Thanks to Edward Thompson for creating the E.T. Cave Valley School Fund,” says Brooks. “Eddie announced he wanted to start a fund and made a big donation to the fund. Jimmie Settles did not play golf and contributed his golf fees to the fund. Vicki Burns and Lisa Delgado also made a generous contribution. Thanks to all that donated.”
Cave Valley All Age School is located in Jamaica. Randi wanted to start a golf tournament as a fundraiser to support the Negril community. He and I have supplied the school with electronic tablets, laptops, printers along with various school supplies, books, hand soap, tissue, and other items. With the E.T. Fund we can do more.”
We plan to schedule the next outing for November 4-8, 2020 at Tryall Golf Club and details will follow soon. In the meantime, should you wish to donate or contribute to any of these efforts, please contact Jessie Brooks, Jr. at 630-452-8807 or email him at [email protected]
New 2019 Kia Niro EV EX Premium: A Longer Range All-Electric SUV
By Randi Payton
Decisive Media Network
The 2019 Kia Niro EV brings longer battery range and faster charging to the all-electric crossover SUV segment. Providing loads of new safety technology, sleeker design and smoother performance, it takes away the worry or anxiety of all-electric vehicle when it comes to getting and maintaining enough power for daily commutes. And it easily recharges overnight on a home outlet.
The 2019 Kia Niro was first introduced in 2016 as a Hybrid. The Plug-In Hybrid arrived in 2017. Kia came out with the all-electric model in 2019 in two EV trim levels: The Kia Niro EV EX four-door Front Wheel Drive (FWD), which starts at $38,500 MSRP, and the Kia Niro EV EX Premium four-door FWD, which starts around $44,000 MSRP.
I tested the 2019 Niro EV EX Premium, which offers the utility and functions of an SUV, with the benefits of an electric vehicle. Price, as tested, came to $47,155 with added options.
Keeping an electric vehicle charged without the luxury of a fast home charger has been a challenge until now. The charging time depends on whether you have a Level One or Level Two charger.
The new Kia Niro EV maintained a full charge on a Level 2 home 120V outlet during my one-week test drive. The Kia Niro EV has an estimated power range of 239 miles per charge. It generates 201 horsepower from a 64kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, which takes about 30 minutes to charge 100 miles or 80 percent and only 75 minutes to get a full charge. A Level 2 charge takes about 9.5 hours for a full charge.
Features in the EX Premium model includes a 7-inch color touchscreen with navigation, AM/FM, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto smartphone integration, and wireless charging. Other additions in the Premium edition include power tilt/slide sunroof, LED headlamps, 8-speaker Harman/Kardon premium audio system with external amplifier and subwoofer, auto-dimming mirror with Homelink, heated steering wheel, LED interior lighting, mood lighting, and forward/reverse parking distance warning.
Safety features include Kia Drive Wise, an advanced driver-assistance system, antilock braking, traction control, electronic stability control, hill-start assist control, tire pressure monitoring, forward collision warning and accident avoidance assist; lane departure warning and assist; and driver attention warning. Airbags include dual front advanced, dual front seat-mounted, side curtain with rollover sensor, and a driver-side knee airbag.
In case of emergency, the panic alarm in the vehicle will send a notification to the server which dials 911, GPS identifies the car position, and a live microphone comes on so emergency operators can communicate with the driver.
The Niro is a smart vehicle that will adjust regenerative braking, air conditioning, and heat settings by managing speed levels. There are four driving modes to choose from – Eco, Normal, Sport or Eco plus which determine the amount of regenerative braking needed to improve recharging. There’s no interference from braking in the Sports mode and more in the Eco plus mode.
The Kia Niro EV is a futuristic vehicle that is loaded with the latest EV and safety technology. Unlike the silence found in many other EVs, the Niro makes a spaceship-like sound, so you know it is running, which also allows pedestrians to hear it coming.

Game of Privilege: An African American History of Golf
By Lane Demas
ISBN: 978-1-4696-3422-7
This groundbreaking history of African Americans and golf explores the role of race, class, and public space in golf course development, the stories of individual Black golfers during the age of segregation, the legal battle to integrate public golf courses, and the little-known history of the United Golfers Association (UGA)—a Black golf tour that operated from 1925 to 1975. The book charts how blacks nationwide organized social campaigns, filed lawsuits, and went to jail in order to desegregate courses.

By Jonathan Gelber M.D. M.S.
ISBN-10: 1683582586
What happens when an attempted solution to a problem results in an unintended consequence that actually makes the original problem worse? This is known as “the cobra effect”. How has today’s society changed because of Sandy Koufax, Tom Brady, or Tiger Woods? How have courtrooms and the law changed because of the tragic loss of a No. 1 NBA Draft Pick and a NASCAR driver? And what effect did Magic Johnson’s announcement regarding his HIV diagnosis have on the NBA and testing across the nation? Dr. Gelber has compiled a list of impactful injuries and tragedies and the ripple effect they have had on players across several different sports and on society in general.
They Call Me George: The Untold Story of The Black Train Porters
ISBN: 9781771962629
By: Cecil Foster
A historical/non-fiction chronicle of little-known stories of Black railway porters—the so-called “Pullman” of the Canadian rail lines. The actions and spirit of these men helped define the nation in surprising ways; affecting race relations, human rights, community building, the shape and structure of unions, and the nature of travel and business across the US and Canada. Smartly dressed and smiling, Black train porters were a familiar sight to the average passenger―yet their minority status rendered them politically invisible, second-class in the social status, subjected to grueling shifts, unreasonable standards, and insecure jobs.
Hollywood Black: The Stars, the Films, the Filmmakers
By Donald Bogle with Foreword by John Singleton
ISBN: 9780762491414
With the backing of Turner Classic Movies, Bogle, a noted historian and the leading authority on African Americans in film, chronicles Black performers and filmmakers. The lively, informative text and images illustrate the struggles and triumphs of more than a century of cinema. The story opens in the silent film era, when White actors in blackface played Black characters, through the arrival of sound motion pictures and the Great Depression when Black performers such as Stepin Fetchit and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson began finding a place in Hollywood, albeit in rigidly stereotyped roles.
