PGA of America Partners with Radius Sports Group to Elevate Supplier Inclusion Program
Partnership promotes sourcing local and diverse suppliers for PGA Championship events
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (July 10, 2018) – The PGA of America has partnered with Radius Sports Group, a sports and sustainability firm, to advance the inclusion of diverse-owned suppliers in procurement opportunities within the $84.1 billion golf industry.
Continuing its efforts in supplier inclusion, the PGA looks to catalyze and grow its matchmaking program in support of PGA Championship operations and the Association more broadly.
Radius will work with the PGA to develop a turnkey, matchmaking platform for the 2019 PGA Championship, and to invite and engage minority-, women-, LGBT-, and Veteran-owned businesses to participate in the business of golf. The PGA and Radius will identify diverse and locally-owned suppliers to work with larger prime, or tier one, suppliers for execution at the PGA’s Championships, which generate substantial entertainment and tourism dollars within host cities and surrounding areas. Accordingly, building a supply chain representative of the consumer population in these cities is imperative.
“Radius Sports Group understands the importance of inclusion within golf business operations and is the right partner, as we continue to make advancements in this important area,” said PGA of America Senior Director of Diversity & Inclusion Sandy Cross. “Consumers desire to see others like themselves, who share similar backgrounds and life experiences, working within and benefiting from the golf industry. Along with our prime suppliers, the PGA of America has enjoyed success in partnering with diverse-owned businesses, and we want to take that to the next level.”
Radius works with sports franchises, facilities, golf courses, suppliers and governing bodies to deliver revenue growth and reduce costs, while positively impacting society and the environment. Through the partnership, the PGA will further build its database of diverse business enterprises, which represent a wide range of backgrounds, goods and services.
Prospective local and diverse-owned businesses can apply to provide a variety of goods and services to the PGA and its tier-one suppliers. These connections will be made through outreach in advance of Championship events. Opportunities, including those for the 101st PGA Championship at Bethpage Black in Long Island, New York, will be listed on the PGA’s social responsibility site: PGASupplierInclusion.org.
“We’re thrilled to work with the PGA of America, as golf is uniquely positioned to promote diverse and local supplier opportunities, particularly within Championship tournaments,” said Radius Sports Group Principal Gina Rizzi. “One of the obstacles to increasing inclusion within golf has been a lack of process for identifying qualified diverse suppliers. Our partnership with the PGA streamlines the process to embrace diversity, while growing the game.”

Micaa’ Thomas Shares Her Passion for Creative Art and Golf; Your “Tax-Deductible” Support is Requested
July 12, 2018
A Blog by Micaa’ Thomas
While at Archbishop Spalding High School, Severn, Maryland, outside of Baltimore, I was on a co-ed golf team in 2012 and we won the golf championship. In 2014, since we had talented girl golfers, I campaigned to start the first girl’s golf team, in which, I was crowned Medalist at our first Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland Conference Championship (IAAM) appearance.
We won the IAAM Championship the following year, as well. I later earned a position on the Maryland State Golf Association, Poindexter Cup Team and competed against Virginia’s team and helped Maryland win the Poindexter Cup.
Creative Art and Golf are my True- Life Passions
I proudly participated in the Bill Dickey Golf Scholarship Program in Atlanta, Georgia, the Langston’s Boys and Girls Golf Program in DC, and the First Tee Program of Greater Washington, DC, where I was successful at Pebble Beach with the “Shot of Day” and featured in Sports Illustrated.
Academically, I attained National Honor Society, National Honor Art Society status and was the Art Program’s Vice President. Cheryl Thomas, my mother, has always been my caddie and supplemental coach and my father, Michael Thomas, has been the supporter behind the scene. Jokingly, he always says, he is the set-up crew, security monitor and public relations representative.
In preparation for College at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Atlanta, Georgia, I knew I had to focus on my academics since I was majoring in Visual Effects and 3D Animation. I also had to transition to collegiate competition in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In my freshman year, we had a winning season and I was the first freshman at SCAD to win the Appalachian Athletic Conference Championship (AAC) and as a team, we placed fourth in the NAIA National Championship which was SCAD’s first.
As a student-artist-athlete, traveling with my team requires great discipline, time management, and prioritization skills, especially since it’s quite challenging to complete art projects and establish connectivity to specialty software on our golf trips. We must either complete projects ahead of schedule or be approved for an extension. SCAD is quite challenging and certainly different than other universities, because nearly every course is project driven and labor intensive. During this past quarter in 2018, my hard work resulted in me making the “Dean’s List.”

With a stellar academic record and golf background Micaa’ Thomas is shown above signing paperwork when she joined the Bees for the 2015-16 women’s golf season.
Balancing Life’s Demands
Sometimes, we must skip practice to meet course requirements. Unlike high-level Division One Programs, SCAD’s Golf Program does not practice daily, it’s impractical. There’s no traveling tutors, technical diagnostic equipment, like Trackman, Launch Monitors and Golf Simulation machines to examine your swing, you must come “game-ready.” However, we do have a dedicated coach, enthusiastic players and a spirited team that have achieved historic results by winning SCAD’s first AAC Conference Championship in 2018 and appearing in three consecutive NAIA National Championships and placing fourth in the nation my freshman year.
I am very proud to have contributed to the success of SCAD’s Golf Program by receiving the Coaches Award in 2016 and 2017. In addition to being Medalist in the 2016 AAC Conference Championship, I made AAC 2nd Team All-Conference in 2017 and 2018.
As a rising senior, my immediate focus is to master my craft in Visual Effects and 3D Animation to carve my way into a top-level studio and the motion picture industry, such as DreamWorks and Pixar companies. This is one of my true passions.
My other true passion is preparing and competing in the LPGA, “not just to be there,” but excel and win tournaments. I do realize in order to prepare for the LPGA, I will need a transition period of concentrated training by some of the best instructors, a mental coach and fitness trainer and custom-fitted equipment. This will require sponsors, supporters and hopefully endorsements to fulfill my passion and dreams.
Golf has truly been a positive experience in my life. I have leadership vision, self-esteem, self-worth, understand the importance of networking and have friendly contacts around the world. Golf is not just a game to me, it is a life-style and offers me personal challenges, an appreciation in victories and peaceful moments of relaxation.
I thank my Lord, Jesus Christ for directing my path to the wonderful world of golf, my parents, coaches, countless supporters and organizations who have helped me on my continual journey to greatness in golf.
I Need Your Monetary Support (Tax-Deductible)
This summer as a rising senior, I hope to gain your support by making “tax-deductible” (win-win) donations preferably to my father, Michael Thomas at P.O. Box 1243, Bowie, Maryland 20715. He can be reached at 240-432-2997 or at [email protected]. Your donations go through the “Sisters Who Swing Golf Association,” in my name. Upon making a donation, please call or e-mail my father Michel Thomas for the tax identification number. Or, give my father a call with any questions that you may have.
Thanks in advance for your support and I hope to swing and putt my way to the top of the leaderboard!

Hello all,
Sincere thanks to everyone who participated in our Caddy Class at the beautiful Golf Club of Dallas, Saturday, July 8.
Thirty-plus years ago, when I started my junior golf program and received my first USGA grant, a Caddy Program was introduced as part of the curriculum. The program started because our students were entered into U.S. Kids, The Starburst, North Texas Junior Golf, and, in addition to other tournaments that required younger players be assisted on the course.
With the assistance of National Golf Association, The Detroit Country Club and the PGA of America, a structured Caddy Program was designed and implemented for my program The Roaring Lambs Junior Golf Academy”. Caddying is still a vital, working part of all the programs I lead, instruct and direct today.
Special shout out to the fathers who came to learn how to caddy for their daughters as they prepare for golf course play recreationally, as well as tournaments.
A 20 question written test was given after, and during, the presentation. I am proud to say everyone (juniors adults) passed both oral and written, with scores of 90 +??
REMINDER: The Caddy Class is open to young people (male & female) ages 14 -22. Don ‘t forget to work on your Essay!
What a great opportunity that is being given by the Advocates Foundation (see flyer for details).
Thank you, and until next time.

Top Flight Golfers (TFG) is part of a growing number of African American golf clubs who travel to various USA and international destinations for golf vacations. The Top Flight Golf group chose Garland Resort (Lewiston, Michigan) for its annual June outing this year. None of its players had ever played golf in this area before but Garland was recommended to the group by other Detroit-area African American golfers.
Garland is a first class Golf Resort that has four quality courses with varying degrees of difficulty. It is located in a beautiful area of the lower peninsula of Michigan.
A Top Flight Golf Experience
All of the Garland courses are exceptionally groomed and well conditioned. Dave Sanderson is the President and General Manager of the resort and took exceptional effort to ensure the group received a high level of good customer services during their stay.
Garland’s golf packages all include an optional full breakfast each day. Complimentary club storage and unlimited use of the range and practice facilities are available to all guests.
Dinner specials are featured in the Tamarack Dining Room each evening. Lunch and dinner are also available at the Antler’s Bar and Grill. Fountains course is the premier course at Garland however, Monarch, Swampfire and Reflections all are equally beautiful and a pleasure to play.
Varieties of accommodations are available. The Garland Lodge, single and double villas, golf cottages, condominiums and French Villas are all outstanding options for lodging at the resort. After play libations and food are available after golf rounds on the patio at the TIKI bar. You can see many of the activities, accommodations, special events and more on their Facebook Page.
Since members of the TFG group are residents of warm weather climates, a major requirement for their yearly outing is a destination that has a milder climate. With blue skies and temperatures in the mid-eighties, Garland’s Northern Michigan locale provided outstanding weather for the TFG outing.
Because none of the group had ever been to Garland, our travel options were flights into Detroit, Chicago IL, Grand Rapids, Flint or Traverse City and using rental cars to get to the resort. Dave informed us that there were better reasonable cost airline options to nearby Alpena, Michigan, which would get guests closer to the resort with low costs or complimentary transportation to and from Garland.
Garland is also a winter resort that includes various activities such as snowmobiling, ice fishing, and sleigh rides. Garland is open for golf beginning early April and closes its courses late October. Top Flight Golfers outing is held each year the week after Father’s Day.
The highlight of the outing was a hole-in-one one on the Par 3 hole number nine of the Fountains Course offered up by Johnny (aka Par 3) McGee of Orlando, Florida.

Nowadays, when the subjects of golf and networking come up there is a new approach being taken to this ‘green’ topic. For example, on the night of Thursday, April 10, 2018, Horace Barker, 1st Vice President, Financial Advisor for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, hosted a seminar at the Capital Grille, located inside of the iconic Chrysler Building on West 51 Street in New York City.
The 6:00 p.m. function was themed, “Take Your Investments and Your Golf Game To A New Level,” and it brought together 20 golf local enthusiasts from across a wide spectrum of businesses for a casual dinner.
Barker, a most gracious host, excellently paired the evening with a delicious meal and fine wines. Lively conversation and introductions were made across the room laced with African mahogany paneling and Art Deco chandeliers while Barker asked a few golf trivia questions then shared tidbits of his golf escapades in a warm, stately setting.
The avid golfer certainly knows his stuff in the realm of finance, too. Barker graduated from Claremont University and has over 22-years of experience in the financial sector. From his 399 Park Avenue Office in New York City, he works closely with individuals to help preserve and grow wealth for their long-term goals.
Among the services which he provides are wealth management, 401(k) rollovers, alternative investments, annuities, foreign exchange, life insurance, long-term care insurance and retirement planning. “I believe success in achieving important financial goals starts with a comprehensive wealth strategy. I will help you define what is most important to you and then formulate the strategies that are suited for your needs, whether you are accumulating wealth or investing for income, solidifying your retirement plan or devising a distribution approach that meets your lifestyle and legacy goals,” says Barker.
The highlight of the night was a video presentation and golf tips by PGA Professional Rick Nielsen, Director of Golf at Turtle Cove Golf Center at Pelham Park in the Bronx. Nielsen has over 30 years of experience specializing in golf instruction, clubfitting and golf fitness. Nelson offered up a swath of information on the various parts of a golf club, proper grip, clubface alignment and simulation of the proper golf swing.
All in attendance seemed to gain tremendous information from listening to Nielsen while wholly participating in the Q&A session that followed—where many shared their most difficult challenges and quirks with the game, seeking out Nielsen’s extensive experience.
So, take a lesson here.
If you’re looking to get in front of more prospective clients or to do business in a new way, try adding golf into the marketing mix—You’ll be surprised at who just may show up. For more information on developing a comprehensive wealth strategy, contact Horace M. Barker at 212-893-6542 or EMAIL [email protected]

The mission of the Midnight Golf Program is to improve under-served young adults’ personal development, educational preparedness and appreciation of the game of golf. The program was founded in 2001 by Reneé Fluker, a social worker and single mother who noticed the impact golf had on her son’s life—a student golfer who encouraged her to find a way to provide other young people with the opportunity to experience the game he loved and the doors he believed it had opened for him. It started as an offshoot of the safe streets initiative called Midnight Basketball. Over time, it has come to have another meaning.
Fundraising is a vital part of helping the Midnight Golf program meet its goals and raffle tickets are still available for an all-expense-paid trip for 2 to the 2019 Masters Tournament! Don’t miss this experience of a lifetime. Get your tickets today! Raffle and trip details are below:

Veterans get support from the Adaptive Golf Program of the Georgia State Golf Association

(left to right) William Roberts, Lee Butler, Cliff Williams, Tony Hightower. Just before taking this photo Mr. Roberts had a near hole-in-one!
These four gentlemen veterans in Atlanta are growing into the game of golf while being supported by the Adaptive Golf Program of the Georgia State Golf Association. The nubies enjoyed a 9 hole outing playdate in June at The Hooch club in Duluth, GA. Being inspired beginners, the men are working hard to improve enough to play occasionally in a 9 hole Texas scramble.
Fun at the HOOCH
They will be learning and be playing more as participants in the PGA HOPE program.
It is not always easy for them to get out on the course, but they find a way, and we are grateful for being able to play. Their friendship and enthusiasm are exciting to watch, as they ease into learning the rules of the game. They all agree that golf makes them happier, they are making additional friendship and looking forward to the next outing. During play, Mr. Roberts nearly made a hole-in-one by just before the photo was taken!
