Spoilers Men’s Golf Club Celebrate 30th Anniversary

The Spoilers Men’s Golf Club celebrated their 30^th anniversary and annual golf/fellowship event on June 15-18, 2017 at Legends Resorts in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Each summer the golf club gathers over 80 plus men who all come together to enjoy four days of fellowship and golf. The Club offers a great opportunity for young and mature men, low and high handicappers, to come together annually for fellowship through sport.

“Thanks to all those Spoiler Golfers who came out last weekend to enjoy the awesome and beautiful weather in Myrtle Beach. The fellowship was made even more special by the excellent service that was provided by the staff at the Legends Golf Resort,” said Club President Curtis Bolden whose organization has three successful decades of helping mentor young men and engage them in networking with each other throughout the year.

It was back in 1987, in Greenleaf FL, after a small gathering of seven golfers that the Club began. “We now have over 60 members on our roster and growing every year,” said Bolden. The “Spoilers” badge was originally used by a Boston, Mass., park league men’s basketball team, made up of some recent college graduates. Several of the original Spoilers basketball team members now make up the founding members of the Spoilers Golf Club. And that transition has been a continuous reward for the local community which benefits in many ways from the benevolence of the golf club.

Bolden recalls the long history of the club saying, “Our first trip took place 30-years ago, to Greenleaf, Florida, where seven Boston University friends and family members came together for fellowship. Many at that time had left the Boston area and moved to other areas across the U.S. Original Spoiler members were: Curtis Bolden, Derek Harps, Terry Harps, James Peirce, Bernard Johnson, James Garvin, Bob Keene and Thomas Perry. That was in 1987 in Greenleaf, Florida.

The Club’s annual outing/fellowship takes place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and has done so for the last 29-years.”There is no membership fee to join the club. “Our group has grown over the years to 75 plus men on our contact list. Over the past 10 years, we typically will get 40-48 golfers at outings. This year, June 15-18, we were blessed with 52 golfers who joined us.”

Participation costs for the annual outing typically range between $450 to this year $480 per golfer. It’s a real bargain, considering all that is included: 4 rounds of golf, 4 nights accommodation, breakfasts, lunches and a couple of drink (beer/wine/soda) tickets each day. Additionally, there is an exciting Friday evening cocktail reception and lively Saturday night buffet banquet as a part of the package! “Grab golf giveaways are included with dinner,” said Bolden. “This year to benefit the Sharone Lee Garvin Fund we held a raffle which included some great donated prizes, like 3 golf bags, 2 putters, 3 wedges, golf gift basket, and several other items.”

Today members of the Spoilers Men’s Golf Club hail from a variety of states across the nation: Illinois, Arkansas, Maryland, Nebraska, Minnesota, D.C., Massachusetts, Oregon, Florida, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Connecticut, North Carolina, New York, California, Washington, Texas, and Virginia, just to name a few. The membership roster is comprised of a wide range of persons across various industries and business sectors including college students, retirees, business owners, corporate executives, ministers, and educators.

As Club President Bolden relies on his strong administrative team to help keep things rolling smoothly: Derek Harps, Treasurer; James Garvin, Chaplin; Bernard Johnson, Activities Director; Bob Keene, Secretary; Patrick Diamond and Terry Harps, Co-Chair Fundraising-SLGF.

“I feel that our Club can help maintain old friendships while it continues to build new ones,” said Bolden who is proud to announce the Club’s 501(c)3 status.

Among the accolades and mentions during the 30th celebration from President Bolden were his heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in the celebration. “Congratulations to Raymond Washington as the recipient of our 4th Annual Tilman Avery Sportsmanship Award; and special thanks to Terry Harps and Patrick Diamond, SLGF Fundraising Co-Chairs for their extraordinary efforts.”

In addition to their vast charity work, on June 10, 2017, Mia Alvarado, Executive, Director at Roxbury Youthworks and her staff welcomed President Bolden, his lovely wife Michele along with fellow Spoilers Tom Perry and Jerry Womack to their offices at 841 Parker St, Roxbury Crossing, Massachusetts. There, the group heard from Roxbury Youthworks staff about the many rewards, challenges, and passion they have found in their work. “Our $4,000.00 Sharone Lee Garvin Fund check will definitely provide counseling opportunities for some young folks in the greater Boston area this summer,” stated Bolden.

The work of Roxbury Youthworks helps save at-risk teens by providing services and support in hopes of keeping them from incarceration, teen prostitution, child trafficking or worst, death; and the Sharone Lee Garvin Scholarship is a tax deductible 501(c)3 charitable fund that supports sending underprivileged youth to summer camps. To date, the fund has supported over 900 young people in multiple cities over the past three summers.

As demonstrated for the last 30-years, the Spoilers Men’s Golf Club is serious about making a positive difference in its community, way beyond the golf course.

“Queen of Katwe” will open for screening at The Newark Black Film Festival

“Queen of Katwe” will open for screening at The Newark Black Film Festival being held at the Newark Museum in Newark, New Jersey. Since its inception in 1974, the Newark Black Film Festival (NBFF) has become known among its peers as the longest running black film festival in the United States.

On July 5, at the outdoor screening of Queen of Katwe, the museum plans to welcome a robust audience. The screening is free but registration is required.

The Queen of Katwe is the colorful true story of a young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.

The film is directed by Mira Nair (“Monsoon Wedding”) from a screenplay by William Wheeler (“The Hoax”) based on the book by Tim Crothers, “Queen of Katwe” is produced by Lydia Dean Pilcher (“The Darjeeling Limited”) and John Carls (“Where the Wild Things Are”) with Will Weiske and Troy Buder serving as executive producers. The film stars Golden Globe (R) nominee David Oyelowo (“Selma”), Oscar (R) winner and Tony Award (R) nominee Lupita Nyong’o (“12 Years a Slave”) and newcomer Madina Nalwanga.

For 10-year-old Phiona Mutesi (Nalwanga) and her family, life in the impoverished slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda, is a constant struggle. Her mother, Harriet (Nyong’o), is fiercely determined to take care of her family and works tirelessly selling vegetables in the market to make sure her children are fed and have a roof over their heads. When Phiona meets Robert Katende (Oyelowo), a soccer player turned missionary who teaches local children chess, she is captivated.

Chess requires a good deal of concentration, strategic thinking and risk taking, all skills which are applicable in everyday life, and Katende hopes to empower youth with the game. Phiona is impressed by the intelligence and wit the game requires and immediately shows potential. Recognizing Phiona’s natural aptitude for chess and the fighting spirit she’s inherited from her mother, Katende begins to mentor her, but Harriet is reluctant to provide any encouragement, not wanting to see her daughter disappointed. As Phiona begins to succeed in local chess competitions, Katende teaches her to read and write in order to pursue schooling.

She quickly advances through the ranks in tournaments, but breaks away from her family to focus on her own life. Her mother eventually realizes that Phiona has a chance to excel and teams up with Katende to help her fulfill her extraordinary potential, escape a life of poverty and save her family. Disney’s “Queen of Katwe” will open in U.S. theaters on September 23, 2016.

Trump Changes to U.S. Rules for Cuba Travel Still Permits Tour Groups

June 19, 2017– President Trump signed a new Cuba policy into effect on Friday that ends individual peopletopeople travel to Cuba, though travelers still can visit the country as part of tour groups.

The policy is a reversal of the eased restrictions put in place in 2016 by the Obama administration. “Easing restrictions on travel and trade does not help the people, it only enriches the Cuban regime,” Trump said in a speech shortly before signing the new order. “The profits flow directly to the military. The regime takes the money and owns the industry.”

“It’s hard to think of a policy that makes less sense that the prior administration’s terrible and misguided deal with the Castro regime,” Trump said. “They made a deal with a government that spreads violence and instability in the region. Those days are over.”

The new policy was not expected to affect flights or cruises from the U.S. to Cuba, according to press reports, including how the new policy might affect meetings and incentives, as they become available. Click here to view details of the policy.

The New York Times pointed out that lovers of Cuban cigars and rum, as well as Starwood Hotels, which has a deal to run a hotel in Havana, can rest easy. According to the paper, “The policy represents a middle ground between hardliners in Congress, including Senator Marco Rubio and Representative Mario DíazBalart, both Florida Republicans who have called for a complete reversal of Mr. Obama’s Cuba policy, and business leaders, human rights groups and many of Mr. Trump’s own advisers who wanted to preserve it.”

The final round did not disappoint! The word of the day was “WIND!”– Winds from 15-20 mph gave the players an extra challenge throughout the final round of the 117th US Open.

Erin Hills showed its teeth today, even with the soft conditions that were created from the massive rain that relentlessly drenched spectators during the week.

Tournament action saw the leader Brian Harman, one of the few left-handed players on tour, in the lead at 12 under par. Harman played some phenomenal golf throughout 11 holes, to remain at even par until bogeying both the 12th and 13th, to drop behind by 1 at 11 under par at the time.

Meanwhile, 2 of the 3 players that began the day tied for 2nd at 11 under (ToFleetwood and Justin Thomas) started out with high hopes of catching and overcoming the leader. But just could not mount enough of a charge to get it done. Fleetwood played solidly to end at 11 under in a solo third place finish.

Meanwhile, Justin Thomas couldn’t follow-up his record-setting performance of the day before, struggling to control the ball in the wayward Erin Hills wind. Thomas bogeyed holes 2, 4 and 5 on the front, as well as 13 on the back, to reach 3 over par for the day. This dropped him to minus 8 and his U.S. Open chances dissipated with the wind.

The third person of the trio, Brooks Koepka seemed to be feeling it…navigating the wind; hitting fairways and greens, and posting birdies at holes 1, 2 and 8 on the front and at holes 14, 15 and 16 on the back. These shots resulted in Koepka taking a commanding 4 -shot lead over the field, at 16 under. These birdies would prove to make a big difference for him on this day!

Hideki Matsuyma made a furious charge posting 5 birdies on the back 9, for a 66, which was low round of the day and putting him into the clubhouse with the lead at 12 under par.

Matsuyma showed strong confidence throughout the day making shots that demonstrated how he won the Asian Amateur Championship in 2010 and 2011.

Tour winner, Matsuyma played excellently at the U.S. Open. But, it wouldn’t be enough, as Brooks Koepka caught fire and reeled off three birdies in a row on 14, 15 and 16, to put the tournament out of reach for the other competitors and giving him the winning score of 16 under par.

Brooks Koepka arrived at the 2017 U.S. Open with one career victory on the PGA Tour. He left as a major champion. He’ll also take home a winner’s share of $2.16 million out of the $12 million purse.

Both Brian Harman and Hideki Matsuyama finished at 12 under par, tied for 2nd place.

Other noteworthy performances include the rookie Xander Schauffele who played to a 3-way tie for 5th place with Bill Haas and Rickie Fowler. Schauffele and Hass both shot 3 under 69’s and Fowler shot an even par 72.

Brooks Koepka Wins 2017 US Open to Capture 1st-Ever Major Championship.

Jeff is the father of Amateur Golfer Cameron Champ and he had a terrific time following his son around the course (outside the ropes) this week. Cameron, a native of Sacramento, Calif., is an up-and-coming star on this Tour and most certainly, will take home the prize one day!

Cameron, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Thursday, played the week among some of the best players in the world, where he held his own. Champ qualified for the U.S. Open by finishing T-6 in the Newport Beach, Calif., Sectional. With some impressive shotmaking, he finished up the 177th U.S. Open even par, and in a tie for 32nd place in the 117th U.S. Open.

In chatting with Cameron stated that “The experience was phenomenal this week and I played a practice round with Rory McElroy.”–whom Cameron so happened to out-drive significantly. Cameron also shared with us that during his practice round with Rory, the Northern Irish professional golfer gave him some advice, telling him that his driving distance is a “real advantage,” and that Cameron should use it to his benefit, “because it’s definitely a weapon out here on Tour,” he said Rory told him.

Cameron was number 1 in driving distance for the week, coming in at 334.5 yards. And he said that he’ll continue playing amateur tour events. he is slated to finish his senior year at Texas A&M next year.

With a good-natured, humble, personality and soft-spoken demeanor, Champ lived up to his name during the tournament, making strokes that surprised many spectators.

On Friday, completing the second round, he was a part of the hunt and actually, leading the field in driving distance. He’s a long hitter, and that’s something that can take golfers that know how to control the ball, a long way in tournament play. At this year’s Open, golf fans all around Erin Hills are noticing Champ. His 6-foot frame is full of substance and power.

In my opinion, regarding Cameron, I’ll say that the Tour should get ready for this young man….he’s got the game to be there right now!

(June 17, 10:28pm) Today’s scoring started out at a frantic pace. With the course receiving an inch of rain overnight, players were hitting darts into soft greens but the greens were still fast, rolling out in excess if you misjudged the speed!

We’ve got a heck of a golf tournament brewing!

Paul Casey was tied for the lead at the beginning of the day, teeing off with Brian Harman on hole number 1, but Casey was derailed at hole number 3 with a triple bogey that sunk his ship on the day. He finished +3 and is 4 under for the tourney.

Brian Harman, on the other hand, stepped on the gas and is now the solo leader in the clubhouse at 12 under par.

Charley Hoffman, who at the time was in the lead at -9, eyeing a birdie putt at the par 3 ninth hole.

There was tremendous golf being played today and the scoring is the indication of that statement! The third 65 of the tournament was shot today by Patrick Reed who, at the time, entered the clubhouse at 8 under and tied for the lead, which would not hold up!

This was followed by the record-breaking all-time lowest round ever shot in a US Open. It was accomplished by Justin Thomas, who at the time entered the clubhouse with the lead, shooting 9 under 63 for a total of 11 Under Par, which also would not hold up!

Late round battle for the lead was ongoing between Brian Harman and Tommy Fleetwood, who both hit into the 18th green and tied for the tournament lead at 12 under. Once these two left the 18th green, there was a single leader after Fleetwood boogied.

Interesting spectators whom I spotted and met while walking the grounds today include Sean Reeves and Cedric Meyers.

These guys traveled from Nashville, Tennessee to attend the U.S. Open. When asked how they were enjoying the tournament, they (…like many other spectators) let me know they were truly amazed at the low scores being shot at this Major.

Their favorites? Sean smiled and said, “Justin Thomas” was his guy. He went on to remark about the second shot on the 18th hole that Justine hit into the green, to set up an Eagle putt. (The 18th played 667 yds. today….yikes! )

Cedric stated that D.J. (Dustin Johnson) and Tiger (Woods) are usually the guys he’s following, but Brendan Steele was being tracked in their absence.

Cedric and Sean are avid golfers and have attended other tournaments, namely The Players and St. Jude. Cedric says his handicap is about 15 and Sean is at 12; both respectably. It was great talking with these guys and they picked a heck of a day to come to Wisconsin to a major tournament.

Sunday is sure to be a barn burner!

117th US Open at Erin Hills with Derrick and Craig Stingley Reporting June 16

(June 16 9:40p.m.)–Another fantastic day of golf at the 117th U.S. Open at Erin Hills! Rickie Fowler and Paul Casey started out the day in the lead at 7, but a number of players had strong rounds to make what seemed to be a 2 man race, a legitimate tournament, that was sure to thrill spectators on this coming Saturday and Sunday.

3 shots separated the top 13 players on the leaderboard. Though the temperature was only mid-80’s, it was humid, with a scorching sun which seemed to cause a 94-year-old gentleman, who was reportedly attending the event for the first time, to succumb to the heated conditions and loose his life. CPR was performed onsite, to no avail. All indications point to death by natural causes, per the Washington County Sheriff’s Department who said that no foul play was involved. The county’s medical examiner’s office assisted with the investigation and says the death is the first of this kind to happen at the U.S. Open. Our prayers go out to the family.

Rickie Fowler and Brooks Koepka got off to a hot start, moving to -9, before coming back to the field today. Rickie cooled off mid-round with 3 straight bogies, to finish the day at 6 under and in a 3-way tie for 5th place.

During our movement around the grounds today, we met a couple of brothers, John and Andre Harvey, who had traveled up to the U.S. Open from Chicago, Illinois. They s shared with us that they are avid golfers with a love for the game, and they try to make it to most tournaments in the area; so they had to come up to this major. They were rooting for Rickie Fowler–but said, they just really like watching the young guns on the Tour. The brothers want to see who will ascend to the number 1 spot, watching to see if they’ll be able to maintain the ranking as long as Tiger Woods (which of course holds is a record that may never be broken). I asked the brothers if they attended the Rider Cup at Medinah in 2014, and with broad smiles, they replied, almost in unison, “Oh yes!”

We also spoke with a Wisconsin native who was working inside the ropes as a volunteer for the event, Joah Tucker. Joah said that this tournament was his first time volunteering to work a PGA Event. “It’s been an awesome experience being inside the ropes, watching the best players in the world tee it up!” he said. Joah’s an avid golfer but has not yet had an opportunity to actually play the Erin Hills track. He admits that the course is “definitely” on his bucket list. He says, he doesn’t have any favorites on the week but, it was awesome being inside the ropes with the biggest names in golf! The tournament is shaping up to be a real barn-burner for the weekend. If the rain holds off. This weekend there will be several players from the top 10 missing in action, such as Dustin Johnson, Rory McElroy Adam Scott, Jon Rahm and Jason Day. (June 14, 2017 9:50 p.m.) As Rickie Fowler was tying the record for lowest round in an opening round of the US Open, he was sharing a headline with a major incident this morning. A blimp–supposedly unassociated with the US open tournament–crashed about a half-mile away from the golf venue. According to reports, the pilot was flown to a local hospital and is recovering from his injuries.
Back at the Open though, the key to success for golfers was staying in the fairway and reading putts.

Rookie Xander Schauffele, who is tied for 2nd with Paul Casey, managed the course extremely well; and said, the fact that no one in the gallery knew who he was helped him to play a pressure-free round. He carded a 66.

Wisconsin native Steve Stricker stated that the fairways were generous and that he felt he missed a number of opportunities, which could have netted a round of 3-to-4 under par, instead carding a 1 over.
Errant shots and narley fescue created problems for several of the touneys favorites. Jhonattan Vegas actually hit a great shot out of the fescue within 4 feet of the pin on hole 18th…. Vegas is currently at +5. Other notables: Dustin Johnson +3, Bubba Watson +3, Daniel Burger +6, Rory McElroy +6 and Jason Day +7.

This midsize luxury sedan rises above the compact XE and the full-size XJ. Rear-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional. Three engines are available including a 2.0-liter gas turbo-four with 247 hp/269 lb-ft of torque, a 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4 with 180 hp/318 lb-ft or a 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 rated at 340 hp or 380 hp and 332 lb-ft. An eight-speed automatic is the sole transmission offered across the entire XF lineup.

The XF’s spacious trunk can be expanded via the available 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats in the Premium and higher trims. EPA fuel economy ratings are about the same to the 2017 model: 31/42 mpg city/highway for the rear-drive diesel models and 30/40 mpg with all-wheel drive.

( June 13, 2017 4:23 pm) — Got out on the course again earlier today and met “Paul”—an African American fellow who is the fitness trainer to the number 31st ranked player in the world: Danny Willett, an English professional golfer who plays on the European Tour. Willett is a solid player. In April 2016, he won his first major championship at the 2016 Masters Tournament, becoming only the second Englishman to achieve the feat and the first European in 17 years to win at Augusta National.

Willett turned professional in May 2008, and earned his European Tour card for the 2009 season coming through qualifying school. “Paul” has been working with the Willett team for 4 years, so he was on board for the Majors win at the Masters a couple of years ago.

“Paul” was a little standoffish, but he did answer a couple of questions that he allowed me to pose– His Name and Tenure with the Willett Team.

Following a successful 2009, finishing 58th in the inaugural Race to Dubai with eight top-10s, Willett challenged at the 2010 BMW PGA Championship, taking the first-round lead before falling off the pace and finishing outright fifth, winning 190,800 euros. Following this performance, Willett moved into the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time. He finished the 2010 season ranked 23rd on the Order of Merit.

We also ran into Charles Woodward. Charles is an Independent PGA Tour Rep and seemed to roam freely throughout all of the player practice areas. He represents several products, one of which is Soft Spikes.

He became an Assisting Pro in 2003 and transitioned into Product Representation working with the Nationwide Tour, LPGA and as a full-time Rep for multiple products on the PGA Tour since 2013.

There was a delay of some 3 hours for players today to get on the course for their practice rounds due to storms last night!

Practice rounds started at 9 AM.
Asking several players– including Wisconsin Native Steve Stricker, how the course was playing, he said the course was “really good” and had softened up from the rain. If it stays this way the players could shoot some low scores, but some also stated, they hope there is no more rain although it is forecasted over the next several days.

The USGA surprised players on Tuesday by sending crews out to mow some of the deep fescue rough that lines Erin Hills. The rain caused the grounds officials to cut away some of the fescues (tufted grasses) on several holes, four to be exact. We discovered that during a maintenance meeting on Monday afternoon officials addressed how certain types of fescue have a tendency to lay flat when it rains or when the wind blows. As a result, crews “trimmed” portions of the fescue rough on Nos. 4, 12, 14 and 18.

Although some players have criticized the rough, most notably Kevin Na– who posted a video to social media on Monday attempting to hit out of the fescue, a USGA spokesman said that Tuesday’s maintenance had “nothing to do with reaction from players.” Well, that’s something to think about.

[June 12, 2017) Hot and balmy, 91 degrees on the first day of practice rounds. Threatening storms are forecasted Monday through Wednesday this week, with clearing and cooler temps predicted for start of the tourney on Thursday.

Some say that the easiest golfer to root for at U.S. Opens over the last 20-years–and definitely most recently, has been Phil Mickelson. This Lefty has finished runner-up a record six times at this tournament and has eight (yes, 8!) top-five finishes here in his career. But Mickelson will be missing on the tee box this year, choosing to spend the time at his daughter’s high school graduation in California.

Jordan Spieth, “Kid America” has had a brilliant time during 2015. The holder of two major championships at the age of 23, he’s an assertive shotmaker who is worth watching, as he’ll probably win more in the future. Will he succeed in making three majors before the age of 24? Well, at this year’s U.S. Open at Erin Hills Spieth has a real chance to do just that.

ENDALZ Charity Golf Tournament Shoots For A Cure

The ENDALZ Charity Golf Tournament was a huge success on June 7, 2017, and—in spite of having to end early due to excessing rain—a great time was had by all at the Innisbrook Resort, Palm Harbor, Fla. “We had 17 teams compete on the challenging Copperhead course,” said organizer, Rufus Lewis, whose wife of 52-years, Cynthia, is a victim of the disease. “Everyone enjoyed themselves and had lots of fun.” Golfers chowed down on a delicious lunch and received gift bags full of goodies. Proceeds from the tournament benefited the Walk to End Alzheimer’s that is being held in Tampa, Florida, Saturday, November 18, 2017, at 8:00 a.m. at the Amalie Arena. All are welcome to join the Walk.

In attendance was Mr. Belvin Brown from St. Petersburg,Fla.—the oldest player. Brown has been playing golf for more than 70-years.
