PGA National Resort & Spa – As Good as it Gets for a Traveling Golfer

Few destinations have a golf pedigree as storied as PGA National Resort & Spa and its Champion Course. The legendary South Florida vacation spot’s vaunted resume includes hosting the 1983 Ryder Cup, 1987 PGA Championship, and nearly two decades of the Senior PGA Championship.
Currently, PGA National hosts The Honda Classic, one of the PGA TOUR’s premier events and the first stop on its famous “Florida Swing.” Recent tournament winners include elite TOUR players such as Rory McIlroy, Camilo Villegas, Ernie Els, Luke Donald, Padraig Harrington and Adam Scott. Harrington says that outside the majors, The Champion is “the best course we play on TOUR.” The Bear Trap took a bite out of Adam Scott, but it still wasn’t enough to knock the Aussie out of the top spot at the 2016 Honda Classic.
PGA National is also home to the trifecta of holes named “The Bear Trap” on The Champion – holes 15, 16 and 17 where designer Jack Nicklaus famously said, “It should be won or lost right here.” Why so hard? Water, water and more water. Play them at your own risk.
PGA National boasts four other excellent layouts including The Palmer – an Arnold Palmer signature course with a subtle nod to the game’s Scottish roots. Don’t miss a chance to play its splendid new Fazio Course – a thrilling renovation of “The Haig” which was the resort’s original 18-hole course opened in 1980. The shortest of the five courses at PGA National, The Squire is named after the immortal Gene Sarazen, the first golfer ever to win the professional Grand Slam. Dubbed, “the thinking man’s course”, George and Tom Fazio designed The Squire to be the ultimate test of accuracy and precision. Lastly, a short drive from resort grounds, The Estates features a masterful mixture of sand, water and lush fairways and greens. Winding through open meadows lined with Florida Pines and subtropical foliage, this course provides a scenic challenge.
For those who don’t yet play like a pro, PGA National has the distinction of being home to three of the most world renown golf schools; the David Leadbetter Golf Academy, Dave Pelz Scoring Game School and Every Ball Counts, the world’s first science-based, statistics-driven training system for golf improvement at the off-site Estates Course. Loft Golf will bring out the best in a player’s game with its custom PGA TOUR-level club fitting as well.
Long known as one of the true innovators in instruction, David Leadbetter’s creative teaching methods set the gold standard for improvement from beginners to golfing superstars like Ernie Els, Michelle Wie, and Trevor Immelman. Multi-day schools are offered as well as two- and three-day retreats and private lessons.
The “Score-Focused” program at PGA National is developed by Dave Pelz, the game’s foremost authority on the short game and putting. The curriculum encompasses distance wedge shots, pitching, chipping, sand play and putting. PGA TOUR professionals such as Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, and Mike Weir have all relied upon Pelz’s master instruction. A variety of classes are available.
Every Ball Counts offers players of all levels a unique goal-based improvement methodology validated by PGA TOUR players and elite Olympic athletes for over 30 years. The training center is specifically designed to seamlessly incorporate all aspects of golf performance. A key focus at Every Ball Counts is to develop a knowledge and understanding of the desired mental state conducive to the production of efficient and repeatable golf swings. EBC teaches the player to perform the same golf swing whether in practice, club championships or The Masters.
PGA National also offers individual golf lessons from PGA Instructor and Certified Titleist Performance Institute Level 2 Coach Steve Cox. Cox is passionate about teaching all skill levels and assisting elite professionals. He’s a Certified Trackman Coach as well as an expert on new player development programs backed by the PGA of America, Titleist Performance Institute, and Aimpoint Green Reading.
One would think PGA National would simply rest on its golf laurels. However, that’s not the case as the legendary resort just unveiled its recent $125 million revitalization that has turned entire property into a spectacular “must visit” vacation destination. Guest rooms are generously sized with private balconies and modern work stations with iPad docking stations. In addition to 339 renovated standard rooms and 40 two-bedroom cottages, the resort offers specialty suites. One-bedroom media suites feature large HDTVs, gaming consoles and sectional sofas. These “specialty” suites are ideal for golf buddy trips, football “big game” weekends and group getaways. Guests will discover luxurious high-tech living areas with stunning property views from a private terrace or balcony and creature comforts galore.
Most notable is the new 33,000-square-foot high-tech Sports & Racquet Club which recently underwent an impressive $4 million comprehensive facelift. Upgrades include state-of-the-art exercise equipment, indoor racquet ball court, three aerobics studios with new sound systems, five-lane saltwater lap pool, spin room with video road mapping, indoor volleyball court, two lighted pickle / paddle ball courts, 18 Har-Tru tennis courts (11 lit for night play) and one lighted hard court with a hitting wall.
The Sports & Racquet Club also offers more than 75 classes weekly and is staffed by 12 nationally certified personal trainers focused on individual service. Classes include yoga, Pilates Barre, Zumba, belly dancing, Tabata Boot Camp, Tai Chi, and an array of dance, strength and cardio sessions. TRX, cardio boxing, kickboxing, rowing and heavy ropes offer a higher intensity workout.
Before or after a rough day on the course indulge in one of more than 100 treatments offered by The Spa and Salon at PGA National, which has long been a spa destination favorite. The Spa blends stunning surroundings, lavish amenities, and impeccable personal service with the ancient restorative powers of “The Waters of The World” — a collection of healing mineral pools with salts imported from around the globe. Whether you desire an invigorating massage or a specially designed treatment, it is all here at this 40,000 square-foot sanctuary.
Those who prefer some R&R can lounge in the zero-entry pool or savor some of the finest cuisine on PGA Boulevard with nine onsite dining options. Chef driven Ironwood Steak and Seafood radiates elegance and sophistication. This contemporary American Steak and Seafood house takes a wonderfully fresh and unexpected approach to classic steaks and local, fresh, Florida seafood. The classy iBAR in the lobby is the perfect spot to recount your fortunes or misfortunes on The Champion’s Bear Trap, while iDeck provides stunning views of the property’s serene landscaping, picturesque pool area, and tranquil lake, making it ideal for dining under the stars.
Play at PGA National Resort & Spa with golf packages that fit like a custom set. PGA National’s most popular golf offer, the Gold Golf package features a daily round on one of the resort’s five layouts (surcharge for The Champion Course). Rates start at $279 (per person, per night, double occupancy).
The Unlimited Escape and Play golf package starts at $94.50 for the summer and $279 for the fall (per person, per night, double occupancy). Guests enjoy daily golf on The Champion (surcharge), Palmer, Fazio, Squire and Estates courses with complimentary replay rounds for cart fee only (booked after daily round completion).
Included in both golf stay-and-plays are nightly deluxe accommodations, complimentary cart fees and club storage, access to PGA TOUR quality practice facilities with unlimited range balls, and full daily breakfast in the Palm Terrace. Resort fees and taxes are additional for both offers.
If you’re a traveling golfer, PGA National Resort & Spa is just about as good as it gets. For more information visit www.pgaresort.com, or call (800) 533.9386.
Jamal Hutchison Wins at Western North Carolina Junior Golf Association

Jamal Hutchison showcasing his trophy and scorecard.
Golf here we come!!
On June 15, 2016, it was a highlight day for skilled 11-year-old Jamal Hutchison “Sweetball”—a fond nickname that his loving parents gave him many years ago. Jamal was on a roll this day, in more ways than one.
At the finish, Jamal had succeeded in accomplishing his goal, winning 3rd place (in the 12 and 13 age bracket) to qualify for the second round of the Drive, Chip and Putt Competition.
The tournament, hosted by the Western North Carolina Junior Golf Association and held at the Links O’Tryon in Campobello, SC, this year, attracts superior talent each year. This year, it was Jamal’s time. It was a significant win for the youngster and means that the talented golfer will get to participate in the organization’s elite Masters contest this August.
The WNCJGA was started in 1996 and is patterned after the successful San Diego Junior Golf Program. LPGA Class-A teaching professional and 1997 LPGA Teacher of the Year Diane McHeffey began the nonprofit WNCJGA to make golf accessible to juniors in the local area. Her efforts and those of scores of volunteers have guaranteed the success and growth of this organization.
The Goal Is In Sight
“It was another great day shared with my son,” said doting dad Robert Hutchison who attended the tournament. The elder Hutchison who has been Jamal’s golf coach and instructor since he started playing golf “…then great golf came calling, Jamal played like a champ today!” The excitement was strong; the outcome uncertain. It was the final day of the two-day tournament that was held at Links O’Tryon, in Campobello, South Carolina, where Jamal had been trailing by one stroke after day one. He knew that he desperately needed to gain the lead to assure a win.

Jamal Hutchison (far right) displays his First Place win.
According to Course Architect Tom Jackson, Links O’Tryon is a course where you don’t have to hit driver on a lot of holes, but it’s still challenging. The course was also selected as one of the Best Places to Play by Golfweek magazine and rated Four Stars by Golf Digest the course is challenging yet enjoyable for players of all skill levels.

Jamal’s confidence soared on this beautiful course where he was surrounded by Bermuda 419 tees, fairways and roughs, and new Diamond Zoysia greens. Challenged on a Par 72 of 5338 yards, Jamal reigned in his focus and shot 73 on the final day, to win by 10 shots in the 13 and under division.

Above: Robert and Lisa Hutchison proudly surround their son Jamal
“I did witness his limitless ability to be a special individual with golf. He handled the pressure of finishing off a great round while competing against kids at least two years older than himself],” said the devoted father who is ‘super proud’ and happy for those that have enjoyed watching his son’s golf game continue to develop. “Jamal knows he has some genuine people rooting for him.”
Left: Jamal with his mother, Lisa, at his 5th grade graduation day—next chapter middle school— Jamal received the school’s Presidential Award for receiving all A’s, all year, and perfect attendance.
Jamal will also compete in the U.S. Kids World Championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina on August 4th, 5th and 6th.
The goal of the WNCJGA is to maintain a professionally run, nonprofit organization that enables newcomers and experienced junior golfers to play competitive golf and realize their fullest potential in the great game.
The WNCJGA tournament golf program will consist of two competitive divisions in order to accommodate juniors of all experience levels. A Varsity Division will play 18-hole events, while a Junior Varsity Division will compete in 9-hole events, all at WNC’s premier golf courses. Events will provide the best possible venue for competitive junior golf while teaching sportsmanship, golf etiquette, and the traditional game in a friendly environment.

Wyatt Worthington II Becomes the First African American Club Pro in 25 years to Play in PGA Championship
Worthington’s life changed dramatically when he was just 13-years-old after receiving a short golf lesson from Tiger Woods. That encounter was over 15-years ago, at the Tiger Woods Foundation’s junior clinic in Columbus, Ohio, and the impact that it had on Worthington has not faded. At 13, Worthington was already becoming very comfortable holding a golf club in his hand, learning how to successfully use each one through regular instruction that he received from his coach, Jerry Hammond, a skilled head instructor at The Golf Depot.
TIME TO REFLECT
This week Hammond is relishing the opportunity of watching his former student Worthington tee up at Baltusrol, perhaps recalling the many lessons as time well spent. While Worthington strikes his way around the fairways of the PGA Championship, the two share a bond that neither may have expected to deliver such profound results.
Worthington, now a 29-year-old teaching professional, will no doubt recollect many memorable days, and especially the moments that he spent with Tiger Woods, which precisely fall on the exact day this week.
For Worthington, his life has carved out many unique paths and with each unprecedented turn, he has successfully navigated his way. As a PGA Teaching Profession at his job with The Golf Depot at Central Park in Gahanna, Ohio, Worthington is one of only a very few African Americans who lay claim to this certified status. He is also the first African American Club Professional in 25 years to qualify for the season’s last major. The last time was in 1991 after Tom Woodard achieved it.

To gain the honor, Worthington put his golfing skills to the test and triumphantly finished number sixth at the PGA Club Professional Championship at Turning Stone Resort. The win earned Worthington a spot on this Baltursol PGA Championship.
This is a unique time for Worthington and his first-ever appearance in a PGA Tour event. No doubt the Methodist University graduate will again rise to the occasion.
“It’s like I’m trapped between a dream and a reality this week,” Worthington told Stephen Hennessey during a recent Golf Digest interview. “To be playing in a major and seeing my dream come true, it’s breathtaking, actually.”

The GNCGA is built on the professional playing career and instructional know-how of Greg Norman to provide a comprehensive development platform for golfers seeking to dramatically improve their ability to compete effectively and win.

Our aim is to provide golfers in the U.S. and abroad with an instructional program and training environment in which the ability to play collegiate and professional golf can be fully developed. By opening our doors to these young players, we can provide them with consistent, effective training based on direct experience of what it takes to compete and win at every level of the game.

Harold Varner III, doesn’t do anything halfway and doesn’t take anything for granted. As a skilled professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour, he realizes the momentous glory of his achievement. Despite his smaller stature, Varner is one of the longest drivers of the golf ball on tour and with Tiger Woods out of the field, on the mend—again—Varner is getting a taste of what it’s like to be among a handful of African American professional golfers, and the only active one on the Tour.
At the 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol GC (July 29-31) Varner missed the cut after day two: 72-72 — 144. In his first year on tour, he already has a top-5 finish and has 2 consecutive top-10s. This season he has earned $1,265,844. Yet ongoing challenges facing the PGA Tour rookie include making the cut at tournaments that are pure, fierce competition. Each event tests his skills, taxes his mentality and, undoubtedly, his self-confidence. But the 25-year-old Varner—whose birthday falls on Aug 15— has managed to pull through and keep his fans enthralled, watching his every move.
Varner has missed the cut at the Shell Houston Open “by a million,” in player-jargon—shooting eight shots on the leader board. It certainly disappointed him to have shot seven over par for two days.
“I’m just not hitting the ball well, but I know it’s there. I’m good at this game. I know it’s in there, and I’ll find it,” he was said to have shared in an interview.
Growing up outside of Charlotte, NC, he played on the Gastonia Municipal Golf Course (renamed Catawba Creek) at only $100 bucks annually. Little did he realize that only a few decades later he would be the only active African American on the Tour. Along with this success comes the fact that Varner is referred to by many Blacks as “our brother” whose out there by himself. His accomplishments are admired; his heritage undeniable.
The East Carolina graduate with a marketing degree wants his performance on the golf course to be about skill, rather than race. Spending two years on the Web.com Tour, there he cut his teeth on regular formal competitions. In 2004, he finished 30th on the money list, capturing the 25th—and last—regular-season big-tour spot last August. The placement surprised many of his fans and Varner prepared to tackle the big time.
His rookie season tested him further. He finished in a fourth-place tie after three rounds of the Frys.com Open. Yet, at the final round, he dropped down to a whopping 79 to tie for 48th. Amazingly, his strong playing skills pulled him back up to a finish of T-5 at Mayakoba and T-13 in Honolulu.

He garnered 66th on the FedExCup points following a downward spiral that came to a head in Houston, where he made another wad of money at Hilton Head, followed by a T-9 in San Antonio and a T-8 outside New Orleans. This is what pushed him over the top in May. Varner has more right now than thousands of golfers who have a dream to be on the PGA Tour; and he won’t give up, because, what he has right now is just not enough for him. His desire to succeed on the Tour is as big as his wide, contagious smile.

Today was the start of practice rounds leading up to Thursday – Sunday’s competitive rounds. Wyatt Worthington II is not exactly a household name on the PGA schedule of who’s, who, but he will be in the field this week when they tee it up on Thursday.

He was also the 2015 Omega SOPGA player of the year. He had at that time earned $5,762.60 and made 11 cuts out of 11 events. Rich Berberian Jr. of Derry, N.H. was the winner of the 49th PGA Professional Championship. Teaching Professional Wyatt Worthington II will be teeing off Thursday at 07:40 am and Friday at 12:55 pm. He will be paired with PGA Tour Pro’s Chris Kirk and Freddie Jacobson. I think it will be a nice story if Wyatt is around on Sunday. A long shot, maybe, but a no shot, anyone has a chance. After all, this is golf we’re talking about.

Carvon P. Johnson, of Newtown, Pa. was taking in the sights at Baltusrol on Sunday for the final round. Newtown, Pa. is about 35 miles north of Philly. Johnson is a Quality Engineer who previously worked at L’oreal for 16-years.
He is currently a consultant and adjunct Professor at his Alma Mater Drexel University in Philadelphia. He also teaches Operations Management & Quantitative Analysis. Before coming back to Drexel he did consultancy work at Johnson & Johnson and worked at General Electric for 7 years.

Janai is a junior at Drexel majoring in Marketing and Jayla is a junior at Council Rock North High School. This was Carvon’s fourth major that he has attended. He started playing golf in the mid- 90’s, inspired like so many others by non-other than Eldrick “Tiger” Woods.
Sun Going Down At The 98th PGA Championship
Well, this report is coming to a close. It’s just about 6:30 p.m. at Baltusrol Golf Club, with the Goodyear Blimp fading into the overcast skies in Springfield, N.J. a winner is about to be declared.
About 45 minutes later:
Jimmy Walker from Boerne, Texas holds on to his wire to wire lead to win the 98th PGA Championship. His not so pretty par on the 72nd hole wasn’t exactly a text book one, but it was good enough to capture his first major and the coveted Wannamaker Trophy.
Walker now joins Master’s winner Danny Willett, U.S. Open winner Dustin Johnson and British Open winner Henrik Stenson, as all first-time major winners. Although there were plenty household names at the top of the Leader Board to the very end, Walker kept his cool and his focus on the prize, and what a prize it was.
Winning any major brings with it all kinds of perks and fringe benefits. A BIG paycheck just for starters, numerous exemptions, life-changing experiences, and not to mention a little piece of golfing history. Defending PGA champion Jason Day gave it one helluva try in defense of his title, finishing just 1 stroke back at -13. He eagled the par 5 18th, to finish strong. He and Walker both had all four rounds in the 60’s and both finished with final round 67’s. Congratulation to Jimmy Walker, the 2016 PGA Champion.
