It’s been almost two decades since Tiger Woods won the Masters. It’s been nearly TWO DECADES since 21-year-old Tiger Woods won the Masters. Woods is one of a handful of African Americans to dominate the sport. Even so…it hasn’t done much to increase the number of minorities playing the game. A program at the University of Maryland looked at some of the reasons why. See what’s happening behind in this report by CNS-TV Maryland.
“Golf is more of a teacher than I,” says T.J. Dorsey, DDS, Founder of the Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association (OMYGA) based in the City of Orlando, Florida. Dorsey began the organization in September 1991, the result of a successful and encouraging meeting that he conducted between several concerned citizens. Now, over two decades later, Dorsey is still sharing of himself, his energies and his time to benefit youth.
The mission is targeted: To acquaint inner city and urban minority youth with the sport of golf in order that they may reap the rewards of the game. These rewards enhance character. The following character qualities are developed through the quest for good golf skills.
Without a doubt, OMYGA has succeeded in being a positive influence in the lives of Central Florida youth. The youth who actively involve themselves have participated in numerous golf tournaments and brought home plenty of trophies and awards. Because of the work and efforts of OMYGA, dozens of the youth have been accepted and successfully played on high school golf teams. Many of the students have also earned golf scholarships at universities of their choice and gone on to become honorable members of society.
Where There’s A Will, There’s A Way
Upon seeing the progress and commitment that the organization was achieving under the leadership of Dorsey, the city’s Recreation Department agreed to provide practice space and several pieces of equipment for the youth to use including used clubs, gloves, a field designated for practice and golf course playing when available. Videos and tapes were also provided by the City Recreation Department. The Center for Drug Free Living agreed to provide assistance in recruiting youth and to provide drug prevention education. With Dr. Dorsey as Chief Administrator, the program was underway.
The OYGA season begins each year in January and ends in November. Thus far, there have been well over 100 members and participating parents, the organization prides itself in being family oriented, while nurturing you in the professionalism and disciplines required to play the game of golf and to leave a well-balanced life.
The organization helps transition youth from a life of mediocracy to developing strong characteristics of self-discipline, self-control and self-confidence and self-actualization.
With each season, the OYGA continues to successfully introduce minority youth, ages 6 to 18, to the many benefits of the sport. The organization’s passion has spread throughout the community and others have embraced their efforts, offering volunteer time, and other services.
Dorsey has made great strides for his organization and his influence and impact resulted in the State of Florida providing a $200,000 state-of-the-art golf facility at the City of Orlando Dr. J.B. Callahan Neighborhood Center for his organization to use.
Role Models Make All the Difference
“By teaching the skills required to succeed on the golf course, these inner-city and urban-area youth learn the importance of discipline which will help them grow in almost every aspect of life,” states the organization’s website. Dorsey, affectionately referred to as “Doc”, is a true soul, he knows the power of getting the attention of youth, especially in today’s world, filled with distractions. He has created the perfect platform gain their interest and to help them get a step ahead in life.
OMYGA golf teams have gone one to win state championships and scholarships have been provided for many of their participants.
“The youth also develop various character traits such as positive self-esteem, self-motivation, self-direction and self-respect. Additionally, the OMYGA program aids in producing quality golf athletes that then qualify for high school and college golf teams.”

“I believe that I was born with an ability to play golf and be successful sportsman. But I also believe I was born with an ever greater calling to contribute towards humanity,” starts the gracious feelings of professional golfer Gary Player on the back cover of his book, Don’t Choke. Player is considered one of the greatest golfers of all time, having eighteen Major Championship victories (nine of the regular tour, nine on the senior tour).
He resides on his thoroughbred racehorse stud farm in Colesberg, South Africa and is known as one of “The Big Three” of golf’s golden era (with Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer), he helped launch golf s a major international sport. A Grand Slam champion, he build a reputation of being fearless on the course and steely on the greens. Now in its second edition, revised and up updated, Don’t Choke is Player’s look at what is needed to achieve success when the pressure is on. Player explains how and why he became a champion and what it takes to win in big-time golf, but he also explains how learning to cope in high-pressure situations can help anyone.
This book is not all about golf. Player has had a long, successful career in business since his playing days—designing almost 400 golf courses, marketing an active lifestyle collection of luxury products, and more. If you want to do better in a boardroom or in you next job interview, Player’s advice contained in a brand-new chapter on “the true meaning of success” will help. This glimpse into the mind of a champion offers lessons to everyone who faces pressure. The foreword is written by Dr. Bob Roetella.

The new 2016 Chevrolet Malibu will finally give its rivals some serious competition in terms of size, style, features, fuel economy, and performance. A new Hybrid version of the Malibu, due out this spring, incorporated some Chevy Volt electric technology to strike some fear among its competitors as well.
The first impression of the midsize 2016 Chevrolet Malibu is its stylist exterior shape. Taking some styling tips from its big brother Impala, the 9th generation Malibu made some major improvements over the previous model.
Chevrolet took customer feedback seriously in designing the new Malibu, which should now be more competitive against rivals like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Ford Focus, and Hyundai Sonata.
Chevy was able to make the Malibu larger in size while making it 300 pounds lighter.
The 2016 Malibu is much roomier on the inside and has more legroom for backseat passengers to stretch out. Getting behind the wheel offers a more luxurious appeal than its predecessor.
Powered by smaller, more powerful engines, the base model gets 160 horsepower from a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission. fuel economy is about 27 city mpg with an average 37 mpg highway. The engine saves fuel by automatically shutting down at stops.
For more power and acceleration, the 2LT Malibu offers a 250 horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 2LT averages 22 city and 33 highway mpg.
The 2016 Malibu comes with some high tech features like the ability to become a WiFi hotspot, MyLink with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, navigation, and wireless phone charging. Pricing for the Malibu L ranges from $22,500 for the base L and goes up to $31,795 for the Premier model.
New for Chevy is Malibu Hybrid LT that averages 48 mpg city, according to General Motors. The Hybrid borrows some of the Chevy Volt’s electric technology without having to plug it in to charge. Pricing starts at $28,645 for the Hybrid.

USGA ANNOUNCES 2016 U.S. SENIOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFYING SITES
The United States Golf Association (USGA) today announced sectional qualifying sites for the 2016 U.S. Senior Open Championship, to be held at Scioto Country Club, in Columbus, Ohio, Aug. 11-14. Scioto Country Club is hosting its second U.S. Senior Open and its fourth USGA championship.
Conducted over 18 holes, sectional qualifying will be held at 34 sites across the United States between June 14 and July 11. Player registration is available now and continues through Wednesday, June 8, at 5 p.m. EDT (www.usga.org/champs/apply).
“The U.S. Senior Open is senior golf’s most prestigious championship, and we appreciate the support of state and regional golf associations that allows sectional qualifying to be conducted nationwide,” said Stuart Francis, USGA Championship Committee chairman. “The USGA is pleased to return to Scioto Country Club for the first time in 30 years, when it hosted its first Senior Open, and on the occasion of the club’s centennial.”
Founded in 1916, Scioto Country Club will also host Ohio’s sectional qualifier for this championship on Monday, June 27. This is the third time in U.S. Senior Open history that the championship course will also serve as a sectional site. Oak Hill Country Club, in Rochester, N.Y., and Scioto were the other courses that hosted both, in 1984 and 1986, respectively. Dale Douglass won the 1986 Senior Open at Scioto, by one stroke over Gary Player.
Sectional qualifying for the 37th U.S. Senior Open will be held on The Homestead’s Cascades Course, in Hot Springs, Va., for the 13th time since 2002. The club is the site of eight USGA championships, including the 1967 U.S. Women’s Open and 1988 U.S. Amateur. Sam Snead, a four-time U.S. Open runner-up, was The Homestead’s golf professional for nearly six decades.
Waverley Country Club, in Portland, Ore., is hosting Senior Open sectional qualifying for the fourth time since 2002. The club will host the 2017 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur, its seventh USGA championship. Waverley was the site of the 1970 U.S. Amateur, won by Lanny Wadkins, and the 1993 U.S. Junior Amateur, won by Tiger Woods.
Gold Mountain Golf Club’s Olympic Course, in Bremerton, Wash., and The Club at Carlton Woods’ Nicklaus Course, in The Woodlands, Texas, are among four other 2016 U.S. Senior Open sectional qualifying sites that have hosted USGA championships. Gold Mountain was the site of the 2006 U.S. Amateur Public Links and the 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur. The Club at Carlton Woods hosted the 2007 USGA Men’s and Women’s State Team championships and the 2014 U.S. Junior Amateur. Annandale Golf Club, in Pasadena, Calif., was the host site for the 1967 U.S. Women’s Amateur, while Indian Hills Country Club, in Mission Hills, Kan., hosted the 2001 U.S. Girls’ Junior.
For the fourth time in 13 years, Wynlakes Golf and Country Club, in Montgomery, Ala., is hosting U.S. Senior Open sectional qualifying. Diablo (Calif.) Country Club is a sectional site for the fourth time since 2000.
California has the most sectional sites with five. Three sectional qualifiers are scheduled in Florida, while Texas, Illinois and Pennsylvania will each host two qualifiers. There are qualifying sites in 25 states.
Don Pooley (2003) is the lone player to win the U.S. Senior Open after qualifying through sectional play. Last year, 24 players who advanced through sectional qualifying made the 36-hole cut in the Senior Open at Del Paso Country Club, in Sacramento, Calif. Grant Waite, who tied for third, was the top finisher from that group. It marked the fifth consecutive year that a sectional qualifier has posted a top-10 finish.
The 2016 U.S. Senior Open Championship will be the fifth contested in Ohio. To be eligible, a player must have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 3.4, or be a professional, and be 50 years of age at the start of championship play.
