TGR Learning Lab to Expand to Augusta, GA in New Initiative between Tiger Woods and Augusta National
The TGR Foundation has partnered with Augusta National Golf Club on a new initiative aimed at expanding educational opportunities and community impact in Augusta, Georgia. This collaboration will bring the TGR Learning Lab model—first established in Anaheim, California—to the Southeast, with a focus on reaching underserved youth through engaging, hands-on education.
Inspired by Tiger Woods’ original vision from 2001, the TGR Learning Labs have become a cornerstone of the foundation’s efforts to support student success. Since the Anaheim location opened in 2006, the program has served over 200,000 students with STEAM-focused education and career readiness training (TGR Foundation, 2024).
“This new learning lab is vital because it will open doors for students in underserved communities of Augusta,” says African American Golfer’s Digest Publisher Debert Cook. “It will help youth to explore real-world learning through engaging STEAM programs in a nurturing environment where they can gain critical skills, build confidence, and receive guidance from mentors.”
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, STEAM occupations are projected to grow 10.8% between 2022 and 2032—much faster than the average for all occupations (BLS, 2023). Additionally, research shows that students with access to mentorship are 55% more likely to enroll in college (MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, 2022).
“The Augusta National & TGR initiative, focused on expanding educational opportunities within the golf industry, presents unparalleled possibilities. It will allow kids to discover the varied career paths available to them through education, experience, and exposure,” states Craig Kirby, founder, Golf. My Future. My Game., based in Washington, DC.
The TGR Learning Lab Augusta will offer a safe and inspiring environment where students can learn after school and during the summer. By providing mentorship and skill-building resources, the lab aims to empower young people to pursue their dreams and prepare for success in high-demand careers. This partnership marks a significant step toward educational equity and long-term community development.

Augusta National and Tiger Woods Announce Education & Community Golf Partnership
Fred Ridley, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament, announced today that the Club will partner with five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods to enrich access to high-quality educational programming and affordable golf in Augusta, Ga.
The Club and Woods’ nonprofit, TGR Foundation, will construct a TGR Learning Lab in Augusta, Ga., which will provide access to science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) education and opportunities for young people to prepare for their future. Additionally, Woods and his course architecture firm, TGR Design, will design a new, nine-hole short course as part of the renovation of the Augusta Municipal Golf Course, commonly known as “The Patch,” for the community to enjoy and learn the game of golf.
“Today’s announcements mark an important milestone for Augusta and deepen the connection our community has with one of our greatest Masters champions, Tiger Woods,” said Ridley. “We are thankful to partner with the TGR Foundation and jointly invest in the Augusta community. This partnership, in the TGR Learning Lab, reflects our shared interest in increasing access to high-quality programming and impacting the next generation in a tangible way.
“At the heart of our effort at The Patch is a commitment to create an affordable and inviting golf experience. Equal importance will be placed on creating opportunities to learn and fall in love with the game as well as developing a pipeline for employment in the golf industry. We are proud to add TGR Design to work alongside our project partners to bring this dynamic plan to fruition.”
“Partnering with Augusta National Golf Club to serve its surrounding community is truly special,” said Woods. “My passion for education and golf dates back a long time, as does my relationship with Augusta National and the city of Augusta. This is a transformational opportunity to empower the next generation and deliver meaningful educational programming and access to fun and affordable golf. I am excited to work alongside Augusta National and see both projects become a reality.”
TGR Learning Labs provide students from under-resourced communities with inspiring learning spaces, access to the latest technologies and a community of support dedicated to their success. The programs at TGR Learning Labs are complimentary and focus on STEAM educational enrichment, health and well-being, and career and college readiness. Programs are offered year-round, including during the school day, on weekends and during the summer.
The TGR Learning Lab in Augusta will be located at the former site of Lamar Elementary School and will deliver programming available to all Richmond County School System students and the surrounding Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) school districts. The anticipated opening of the Augusta TGR Learning Lab is April 2028, with the launch of in-school curriculum, programs and community events in Richmond County prior to the opening.
Ridley additionally unveiled details from the master plan for the renovation of The Patch, as well as a new logo. The Patch Project, LLC is a partnership between Augusta Technical College, The First Tee of Augusta and Masters Tournament Charities, Inc. and will strengthen public golf in the Augusta community and foster opportunities to play and work in the sport.
The master plan features a re-designed 18-hole layout led by golf course architects, Tom Fazio and Beau Welling, a new 9-hole short course designed by TGR Design and called The Loop at The Patch, and expansive practice areas to serve a variety of golfers of all levels. More details about The Patch’s renovation, including renderings, are available here.
Augusta Technical College’s golf course management and workforce programs will relocate to The Patch and be linked with The First Tee’s mission to teach the game and its values to juniors and community members of all backgrounds. Their alignment will create the first partnership between these neighboring facilities, to create additional employment opportunities in the golf industry and expand available pathways to welcome those interested in the sport with affordable and sustainable public golf for the community.

Richard Papa “Rico” Marshall, former golf caddie for President Dwight D. Eisenhower Dies
Richard Marshall Standing on the 19TH HoleRichard “RICO” Marshall was born on November 7, 1938, to the late Exie Hamilton Marshall and Lloyd Marshall Sr. in Thomson, Georgia. As the eldest of his parents’ three children, he embraced his role as a guiding figure for his younger brothers. From an early age, Richard developed a strong sense of faith, attending First Mount Carmel Church in Thomson, GA, with his family.
He pursued his education with dedication, graduating from Lucy C. Laney High School in Augusta, GA, on June 2, 1957. Shortly after, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the ARMY in 1962, where he played a role in the Cuban Missile Crisis. His time in service instilled in him a profound sense of patriotism and loyalty to his fellow servicemen. Beyond his service, Richard embraced fatherhood with devotion, becoming a loving and dedicated father to two wonderful children from a previous marriage.
Richard, an accomplished golfer, had the unique honor of working as a golf caddie for President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a role he cherished and often reminisced about with fondness. He had the opportunity to play golf with President Eisenhower, giving this President golf tips and lessons. “RICO” caddied for numerous celebrities including Masters winner Henry Picard, “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias and 44 time PGA winner Don January. In 1995, “Rico” met and advised Earl Woods, when Tiger Woods fresh off his 1994 U.S. Amateur Championship win, made an appearance here at Douglass Golf Course in Indianapolis. He told Earl Woods and young Tiger about the speed of the greens at Augusta National and to obtain an Augusta local caddie there. “Rico” mentioned caddie Tommy Bennett. Earl later hired Tommy to caddie Tiger’s 1ST Masters!
As a young Black Golfer, Richard faced his share of racial inequities at various golf courses in the south where Black Golfers were not allowed to play. Raised in Augusta, GA, as a child who truly loved golf, he’d sneak onto THE AUGUSTA NATIONAL in late evenings and play holes #15 and #3 over and over. He knew every inch of the course! In 1964 Richard’s foursome was the FIRST BLACK GOLFERS TO TEE off and play the once segregated “THE PATCH” municipal GOLF COURSE IN Augusta, Georgia! “The Patch” became the home course for Elite Black Caddies and BLACK golfers.
In 1955 Richard attended his 1st Masters tournament and continued to attend the Masters for 60+ years! Locally he was passionate about our young golfers supporting Douglass Golf Club’s Jr. Golf and First Tee of Indiana programs.
Richard’s skill as a “2” handicap Golfer commanded him the respect and recognition in the golf world, being invited to play in Pro-Ams and winning numerous tournaments nationwide. Richard Marshall was a Golf Pro who loved to sponsor and invite fellow golfers to attend and play the best golf courses throughout the USA, including THE AUGUSTA NATIONAL. He grew up caddying and playing there for years!
It gave Richard great pleasure to take his friends, colleagues and family to THE MASTERS GOLF TOURNAMENTS. On the amateur golf circuit, Richard was often mistaken for Pro Golfer Raymond Floyd because of his long, drive, perfect fade and slight resemblance to Floyd!
Richard’s talents went beyond playing golf. From 1996 thru 1998 he was a co-producer and writer for the television series “Tales from the Links” shown on ESPN. He also starred in three episodes, portraying the character of mercurial golf hustler “Dyke” Lancaster in “No show, No Dough” and “Twin Cities.” Richard’s acute sense of comedic timing made the Lancaster character bigger than life. Most recently, Richard was the consultant for the show’s future 2025 revival and another project, a semi-documented series, about the history of minorities in golf. He was also instrumental in developing and procuring numerous great golf stories for the 19th Hole Project and Bogey Men, LLC. Many of these tales wil make its streaming debut in 2025-2026.
Richard was a man of strength, charisma, and unwavering determination. He lived life on his own terms, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met. Known for his sharp wit, confident demeanor, and generous spirit, he had a presence that commanded respect. Richard found joy in the simple pleasures-starting his mornings on the golf course, engaging in spirited conversations, and taking pride in his sharp sense of style. He valued family above all, always bringing people together with his warm heart and undeniable charm.
On March 12, 2025, Richard peacefully made his transition to the 19TH HOLE in Heaven, with his family at his side.
“RICO” was preceded in death by his brother, George Marshall. He leaves to cherish his legacy: Devoted Life Partner, Arletta “Teale” Rhodes of Indianapolis, IN; Three Children, Zanetta Faye Satterwhite (Fernando) of Decatur, GA, Richard Sterling Marshall of Fayetteville, GA, and Bonus daughter Stacey Cobb of Indianapolis, IN; One Brother, Lloyd Marshall Jr. of Augusta, GA; Four Grandchildren: Fernando Corbin Satterwhite, Fernandez Camden Satterwhite (Brandi Jo), Richard
Cameron Marshall, and Nadia S. Arletta Kimbrough; Two Great Grandchildren: Imani Stetler and Josiah Thomas Satterwhite; Beloved Cousin, Lucille Hamilton; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and other relatives.

New Lee Elder Photo Exhibit Debuts at Langston Golf Course Beginning April 11th
50 years ago, Lee Elder shattered racial barriers becoming the first Black golfer to compete in the Masters Tournament. His career was filled with historic achievements, including four PGA Tour wins, a groundbreaking Ryder Cup appearance, and inspiring a new generation of Black golfers. But Elder’s impact extended beyond competition, he dedicated himself to expanding access to the game, ensuring future Black golfers had the opportunities he fought so hard to attain.
Elder’s commitment to growing the game led him to our beloved Langston Golf Course, a rare sanctuary for Black golfers during an exclusionary era. In 1978, he took over its management, working to revitalize the course and launching programs to support young Black golfers. Today, Elder’s influence still resonates. As we mark the 50th anniversary of his historic Masters Tournament appearance, we will celebrate his legacy with the unveiling of a new photo exhibit – From Langston to Augusta: Lee Elder’s Legacy in Golf – available for viewing beginning next week.
