The annual golf tournament was kicked off with a celebration the night prior with a Hawaiian themed VIP Pairing Party & Welcome Reception hosted by Lexus at Agoura Hills’ iconic Canyon Club. After an incredible saxophone rendition of the National Anthem by Mike Phillips, the tournament kicked off with celebrities from the entertainment and sports world teeing off for a great cause. Players joining Cedric included Smokey Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Malik Whitfield, Byron Scott, David Justice, Marcellus Wiley, Jimmy Rollins, Brooklyn McLinn, Gary Sheffield, Pete Shaw, Adrian Holmes, Willie Gault, Michael Irby, and many more hitting the golf course.

In addition to the friendly competition, the prior evening’s LEXUS VIP Pairing Pary & Welcome Reception featured a silent auction, and live auction which raised significant funds for this year’s beneficiaries. In addition to the tournament’s players, Cedric was joined by Anthony Anderson, Matthew Knowles, and Shalea at the celebratory reception.

“SICKLE ON THE GREEN” SUPPORTING PATIENTS LIVING WITH SICKLE CELL DISEASE

Golf tournaments across the country support many great causes. Cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s … how about Sickle Cell Disease? Yes, Sickle Cell Disease, the most commonly inherited genetic disorder, according to Google. Sickle Cell Disease… let’s talk about it.

If you know anyone who lives with this debilitating illness, you know their days can be hard and a constant challenge. From the cradle to the grave, sickle cell disease can bring a lifetime filled with pain, hospitalizations, organ failure, and a host of complications for every part of the body. Sickle Cell Partners of the Carolinas (SCPOC) uses their tournament to raise awareness about sickle cell and to support patients and families who live with this hereditary condition.

The goal of Sickle on the Green, like most tournaments, is multi-faceted. Sickle on the Green seeks to raise funding for our non-profit and to raise greater awareness about sickle cell disease in circles where it may not be commonly known or discussed. The mission of our organization is simple: We seek to provide a network of support for patients and families affected by Sickle Cell Anemia; to raise awareness and educate the community; and to advocate for a cure. We have “partners” in our name because we cannot do that alone. SCPOC was established in 2009 by a small group of parents, patients, and healthcare providers who care deeply about the sickle cell community. Through the years we have hosted an array of events including our signature event, “Sickle Cell Disease…. Let’s Talk About It,” an annual day conference; the annual University City Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day; family fun days, blood drives; paint and sip events for adult patients; spring break bowling; and we offer annual scholarships for students attending a college, university, or a trade school.

Junior Tee Masters Shine in Historic PGA Jr. League Match in Nashville

On a bright and promising Saturday, July 20, the Junior Tee Masters Golf Club made history at the iconic Ted Rhodes Golf Course in Nashville, Tennessee. The occasion? A PGA Jr. League Match, where 16 young athletes and their families from St. Louis traveled to Nashville not just to compete but to celebrate a shared heritage and passion for golf.

The Junior Tee Masters began early as they arrived at the historic course named after Ted Rhodes, one of the pioneering African American golfers who broke barriers in the sport. Rhodes’ daughter and granddaughters greeted them, sharing inspiring stories of his legacy and profound impact on the game. It was a moment of learning and inspiration, setting a powerful tone for the day ahead.

Afterward, the group reviewed the rules and nuances of the competition, which was essential for many of the younger participants who were about to experience their first competitive golf match. The excitement was palpable as they moved to the practice range, where nerves were calmed, and confidence began to build.

The competition was fierce but friendly. The Junior Tee Masters were split into pairings with their Nashville counterparts, showcasing their skills across different age groups. The 7-9-year-olds secured third place with Austin Wafford. The 10-13-year-olds and 14-17-year-olds excelled as both groups clinched first-place victories.

A standout moment was the match’s closing stages, with the younger competitors rallying around the 9th green, their cheers of “COME ON YOU GOT THIS” to their older teammates. Notable performances included a stellar 29 (-2) from John DeLuca and a solid 34 (+3) from Christian King. Post-match, all 75 participants enjoyed camaraderie and BBQ. The juniors built friendships over food, sharing swing tips and recounting stories from their round.

To cap off the memorable trip, the Junior Tee Masters and their families headed to Main Event for some fun. They raced go-karts and played games, burning off any remaining energy and enjoying their last night in Nashville.

The success of this historic event has already sparked plans for a rematch in 2025. The Junior Tee Masters’ trip to Nashville was not just a victory in the match but a triumph for the community of young golfers Tee Masters is building. As the next generation of African-American golfers competed in a first-of-its-kind event, the spirit of Ted Rhodes shined brightly.

PGA of America REACH Foundation Announces PGA WORKS John & Tamara Lundgren Scholars for 2024-25

25 Students from 15 schools earn $8,000 Scholarships

FRISCO, Texas (Aug. 14, 2024) – The PGA of America REACH Foundation, the 501(c)(3) charitable foundation of the Association, has awarded scholarships to 25 students at 15 colleges through the PGA WORKS John & Tamara Lundgren Scholars Program for the 2024-25 academic school year. With the generous support of the Lundgrens, the $8,000 scholarships were presented to talented and motivated students from diverse backgrounds who are working toward PGA of America Membership through one of the 16 accredited PGA Golf Management University Programs across the nation.

PGA WORKS—an initiative designed to evolve the demographic composition of the golf industry’s workforce and the PGA of America’s Membership—leverages fellowships, scholarships, career exploration events and the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship to inspire and engage talent from diverse backgrounds to pursue key employment positions across the golf industry.

Scholarship recipients must be pursuing bachelor’s degrees in a golf industry-compatible major, with the ultimate goal of obtaining PGA of America Membership. Since its inception in 2018, a total of 93 individuals have earned PGA WORKS Golf Management University scholarships totaling $744,000.

“Our PGA WORKS John & Tamara Lundgren Scholars display the bright future of the PGA of America and the golf industry workforce,” said PGA of America President John Lindert, PGA Director of Golf at the Country Club of Lansing (Michigan). “We are grateful for the Lundgren family and their support of these young adults who will no doubt make their mark within our game as they become PGA of America Golf Professionals and find meaningful careers.”

Scholarship recipients were selected on the basis of academic record, leadership demonstrated through participation in school and community activities, honors and work experience, a statement of goals and aspirations, unique personal or family circumstances, an outside appraisal, active participation in the game of golf and playing ability.
To ensure success and perpetuity of the program, as well as objectivity in the selection process, the PGA of America REACH Foundation retained Scholarship America as a third-party administrator. Scholarship America is the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships, tuition assistance and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations and individuals to help students achieve their college dreams.

Gregory Odom Jr., a Howard alum, secures the win at the 2024 Mastercard APGA Tour Championship

Duluth, GA – Former Howard University standout Gregory Odom Jr. (Memphis, Tenn.) won the 2024 Mastercard APGA Tour Championship, held at TPC Sugarloaf (par-72, 7,259 yards) in Duluth, Ga.

Odom topped the 48-player field with an incredible performance, firing 15-under par (129) during the 36-hole event. After shooting 6-under par (66) in round one, he closed out the tourney with a 9-under par (63) effort, including nine birdies in the final round.

Jarred Garcia finished runner up, registering 12-under par (132), followed by Willie Mack (133, -11).

Fellow Bison Everett Whiten Jr. (Chesapeake, Va.), the 2024 APGA Bridgestone Collegiate Invite Champion, tied for 12^th overall. The Virginia product shot 4-under par (140) in two rounds of play with seven birdies.

During the 2023-24 collegiate season, both Bison ranked among the top golfers, based on their World Amateur Golf Ranking Points Average. Odom and Whiten finished second and fourth, respectively, in the APGA Collegiate Ranking.

In their final season, both Bison earned All-NEC First Team honors while leading the program to its first Northeast Conference (NEC) title and berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Andre Springs is a towering figure in the history of golf, especially within the HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) community. His journey began in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he picked up golf at a young age, driven by a deep passion for the game. His skills quickly became evident, leading him to Fayetteville State University, where as a freshman, he won the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) golf championship. This victory was just the beginning of a career marked by excellence.

After his collegiate success, Springs transitioned into coaching, where he made a profound impact. He became the head coach of the golf team at Livingstone College, a role in which he excelled for over two decades. Under his leadership, the Livingstone College golf team flourished, winning numerous CIAA championships and earning a reputation as a powerhouse in HBCU golf. Springs was not just a coach; he was a mentor, guiding young athletes both on and off the course.

His influence extended beyond coaching. Springs was instrumental in promoting golf within the African American community, working tirelessly to provide opportunities for young golfers to succeed in the sport. His commitment to nurturing talent and breaking down barriers in a predominantly white sport earned him respect and admiration across the golfing community.

The PGA Show has announced the continuation of its “Share Your Story” video contest in collaboration with the African American Golf Expo & Forum (AAGE) for the fourth consecutive year. This contest provides an excellent opportunity for African American Golf Expo exhibitors to showcase their brand stories and the challenges they’ve overcome in their journey toward business success.

Participants are encouraged to submit a three-minute video that captures the essence of their brand and narrates how they have navigated obstacles to achieve their business objectives. This contest aims to highlight the creativity and resilience within the African American golfing community, offering a platform for businesses to share their unique stories with a broader audience.

In addition to the opportunity to share their stories, all exhibitors at the AAGEF will benefit from a special reduced rate to participate as new exhibitors at the 2025 PGA Show. This initiative aims to foster greater diversity and inclusion within the golfing industry, supporting African American businesses in gaining exposure at one of the most prestigious events in the golf world.

The grand prize for the contest is a complimentary exhibit space at the 2025 PGA Show, scheduled to take place in Orlando from January 21-24. This prize, valued at $7,500, offers the winning exhibitor a 10 x 10 booth at the event, providing a significant platform for networking, brand promotion, and business growth. Entries will be judged based on the compelling nature of the story and the creativity in its execution.

It’s important for participants to include their company’s name within the video file name when submitting their entries. By submitting a video, participants agree to the official terms and conditions of the contest. The contest is open to U.S. residents who are 18 years or older and have not previously exhibited at the PGA Show.

The contest runs from August 1, 2024, to October 1, 2024, and is limited to one entry per person. Those who enter have the chance to follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner, Acouture, and make their mark at the PGA Show, a renowned platform for innovation and business in the golf industry. This contest represents a unique chance for African American golf businesses to elevate their profiles and connect with the broader golfing community.

Pinehurst Resort & Country Club to Host PGA High School Golf National Invitational from 2025-27

Top high school golfers from across the country to compete in North Carolina

FRISCO, Texas (August 6, 2024) — The PGA High School Golf National Invitational presented by Titleist and FootJoy will be contested at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina, for three consecutive years beginning in 2025.

Now entering its seventh year, the PGA High School Golf National Invitational takes place each July and was previously held at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club from 2020-22. This year, the Girl’s Invitational will be held July 14-16, 2025. The Boy’s Invitational will be held July 20-22, 2025.

The invitation-only field consists of the top high school golfers from small, large, public or private schools in nearly all 50 states who won their respective state high school championships as a team or as an individual.

Individual and team winners will be crowned following the three-day, 54-hole stroke-play event. Girls and boys medalists will receive exemptions into the same year’s Junior PGA Championships and North & South Junior Championship.

“Following back-to-back highly-successful editions of the PGA High School Golf National Invitational at PGA Frisco, we are ecstatic to take this great event back to another elite destination in Pinehurst,” said PGA of America President John Lindert, PGA Director of Golf at The Country Club of Lansing. “This Invitational continues to grow and showcase the talented young stars of our game. We look forward to seeing the action unfold in North Carolina over the next three years.”

Pinehurst Resort & Country Club first opened 130 years ago and now boasts 10 18-hole courses and regularly hosts numerous Championships, including the 2024 U.S. Open.

“As the home of American golf, we are steeped in history of hosting the best amateurs in the game,” said Matt Barksdale, Director of Golf at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. “We look forward to welcoming back the PGA High School National Invitational to Pinehurst Resort and Country Club to continue on with that legacy.”

At the 2024 PGA High School Golf National Invitational, held in Northern Texas, Georgia (RVA) captured its third-consecutive boys team title with a three-day team score of 12-under-par 852, a new tournament record. Josiah Hakala from New Hampshire (MSC) won medalist honors after finishing 14-under par 202.

California (SMC) cruised to victory in the Girls Invitational with a three-day team total score of 55-under-par 809. Leigh Chien from California (SMC) claimed individual medalist honors following a 4-hole playoff against Olivia Hung from Taiwan (IND) at Fields Ranch West at PGA Frisco. Chien and Hung finished the final round tied at 17-under 199.
