Congratulations to Randy Newsome, winner of the 2020 Mid Atlantic Golf Association (MAGA) Senior Amateur Senior Division. Newsome was a formidable contestant at the event, held at Fountain Head Country Club in Hagerstown, MD, Thursday–Friday, October 15–16.

Seniors competing in the tournament played the challenging par 71, 6158 yard course on a beautiful fall day. When asked about his victory Newsome said, “It makes me feel like I can win at this level and after this was over, all I could do was think about my mentor (Scott Deloatch) who gave me the inspiration.”

For Nesome, the toughest part of the event was “The grind.  It is such a mental game.  Also, competing against former champions of this event, and former state senior open champions the final group made me focus on the here and now.” His playing strategy, “One shot at a time basically.”

Newsome’s future participation plans are in the works, he adds, “I usually play in a few events in Florida in the winter, but I think COVID-19 will prevent it this winter.  I will play in most state (VA) and mid Atlantic events in 2021.

Newsome recently competed in the 2020 Virginia State Senior Amateur, August 11-15 at Westwood Country Club in Vienna, VA.  However, things did not go as planned for the 58-year-old Haymarket, Va., resident. Newsome plays at a 1.2 handicap and remained confident that the season would still end on a high note.

Following the VA Senior Amateur Newsome said, “I was exempt from qualifying due to my top 15 ranking in the 2019 VSGA point totals.” The upbeat player has been practicing and participating in tournaments and continues to prepare himself for the competition.
