To all of the bettors who did not bet on Patrick Reed at the Farmers Insurance Open, Online sportsbook PointsBet has offered refunds. PointsBet is a partnership with the PGA Tour.

Reed, who won the Sunday tournament did so with much controversy that surrounded a high-profile rules issue. Deemed to be handled correctly by the PGA Tour, the issue brought forth a lot of discussion, as former Masters champion Reed went on to secure his ninth career tour victory.

Following the match, the online sportsbook company announced that refunds would be offered to all pre-tournament outright winner bets. This was the means by which PointsBet hoped to settle the much-publicized controversy of Reed’s ball drop during the third round.

“If you bet on a different golfer, we have your back!” PointsBet tweeted Sunday. “PointsBet is refunding ALL pre-tournament outright winner wagers on all other golfers in Free Bets!”

The refund to bettors who did not back Reed in the tournament will come in the form of a credit to be used on future wagers.

The situation occurred on the 10th hole, Saturday, when Reed received a free drop after he believed his second shot was embedded in the rough. The controversy arose because he picked up his ball — although it is allowed under the rules in order to determine whether it was embedded — before consulting a rules official. Although Reed did not know it at the time, the ball had bounced, making it less likely it could have embedded.

A rules official okayed the relief, and Reed took a free drop, then continued on to par the hole. He ended up winning the tournament by 5 shots.

At this week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open, the PGA Tour is debuting a second broadcast geared toward sports bettors with PointsBet.
