The program is designed to create a direct pathway for high-achieving students interested in careers in medicine or dentistry. Participants can earn either a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree in just seven years, shortening the traditional timeline while reducing financial barriers through scholarship opportunities.
The program specifically targets Black male high school seniors, urging community members, educators, mentors, faith leaders, and families to spread the word.
Program Eligibility
According to the announcement, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a Black male high school senior
- Maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA
- Earn a score of 28 or higher on the ACT
- Demonstrate an interest in pursuing medicine or dentistry
Students accepted into the program can complete the academic requirements leading to an MD or DDS degree within seven years and may qualify for a full-ride scholarship.
Addressing Representation in Healthcare
The lack of Black male applicants highlights an ongoing concern within the healthcare profession. Numerous studies have shown that increasing diversity among healthcare providers can improve patient outcomes, strengthen trust within underserved communities, and help address persistent health disparities.
Programs such as the TSU-Meharry partnership aim to build a stronger pipeline of underrepresented students entering medicine and dentistry. However, these initiatives depend on awareness and outreach to reach eligible candidates.
The public is asked to immediately share this information with students who may qualify. If you know any Black males graduating from high school this year and are interested in becoming a doctor or dentist, please pass this information along to them.
Contact Information
Families, counselors, and prospective applicants are encouraged to submit candidate information as soon as possible.
