The Ridgewood Country Club is Golfing Bliss

by Jerry Roebuck

The Ridgewood Country Club is a private country club located in Paramus, New Jersey set on 314 pristine acres. Ridgewood Country Club has a rich history. The Club has been around for 120 years. It was founded in 1890 as a two-hole course called Ho-Ho-Kus Golf Club at another location.

At its present site in Paramus, New Jersey this A.W. Tillinghast-designed, 27-hole facility is one of the top-rated courses on the East Coast. The course has been home to numerous major tournaments and the 1935 Ryder Cup, the 1990 Senior U.S. Open, the 2001 Senior PGA Championship, and the 2008, 2010, and 2014 Northern Trust, formerly The Barclays PGA Tour events. Most recently it hosted the 2022 U.S. Amateur Championship.

The classic Clifford C. Wendehack Clubhouse hosts a beautiful presence, off the entrance to the Country Club. The staff were gracious and attentive, and the members I came into contact with, both on and off the course, were very friendly and gracious.

The practice facilities are above par with color-coded targeted flag pins for your warm-up preparation or practice on the range. A large putting area sits in the middle of the property with a centered flagpole flying the stars and stripes and the club flag surrounded by beautiful landscaping in a bed of flowers.

The course itself is pristine from fairways to greens. The three 9-hole layouts of the east, center and west course each provide a challenging but fair round of golf. The key to a great round is to keep it in the fairway, as the rough can be high and sometimes difficult to get out of with your second shot if you miss the fairway and need to get on the green in regulation of the par 4s.

The greens are pure and well-manicured. The luxury of having a caddy made my round even more enjoyable. His acute knowledge of the greens gave me several one putts and 2 birdies posting a lower putts per round than normal. If you’re playing off the back/championship tees you need to be a long hitter as one par 5 is 624 yards and two other par 5s are 593 yards and one 536 yards.

I finished my round with a great lunch at the golfer’s patio. The food was fantastic compliments to a great chef. Thanks to Alex Champagne, PGA Assistant Golf Professional, my round at the Ridgewood Country Club was one of the memorable highlights of my summer trip to New York and one of the most memorable golf course reviews to date.
