Tyre Nichols, Rhythm & Rhyme for a Sorrowful Time

by John Perry

Did I miss a chapter in our history books?
When the hell did Black cops start beating Black youth? —That’s not a good look;

After all the sacrifices Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made and all the abuse he took,
it’s sad to say I have no sympathy, or pity,
for these five Black officers.
I hope they get fried and cooked.

It’s almost unimaginable that we as a people have gotten to this point.
It ain’t make believe;
It ain’t non-fiction;
It ain’t no Spike Lee Joint;

And to happen during the month of January
which celebrates Martin Luther King Jr.,
in the same city where he brutally died,
how disgraceful and dishonorable,
I’m sure in heaven he cried;

Black people have we lost our way?
If he were here today, You can imagine what he would say;

Memphis didn’t get any more popular as vacation destinations go,
So to go there whether to live, or visit, I say hell no;

To the five Black officers involved in the case,
You set us back 100 years, caused us 50 million tears and embarrassed us as a race;

This 29-year-old young man was on his way home
to see his 4-year-old son,
You insensitive, so and so’s caused that not to be,
Instead look what you’ve done;

It was said that he called for his mother three times or more,
Could you imagine being that close to home and not able to make it to the door;

His parents and the entire community are outraged
and you can understand why,
Tyre Nichols was 100-yards away from home
and didn’t have to die,

As we wish the family sympathy and condolences, all we can do is cry;
For Black folks everywhere, you guys are at the bottom of the totem pole,
And trust me, I hope GOD don’t have no mercy on your souls;

After the “Black Lives Matter” movement and the George Floyd episode,
This was a real slap in the face,
Let the truth be told;

I just hope we don’t have any copycats of this kind,
and with a little luck, This’ll all go away in time.
“RIP TYRE”
