Blog: July 2012
Hard to believe that we are now half way through the calendar year, but also only about 4 more months left to the golf season for those of us up North.
June was a busy month here at Clearview with several highlight events:
On June 10th, Franco Harris hosted the ” For the Love of the Game ” dinner as a fundraiser to honor my dad. It was a great evening which included a program where Franco interviewed Betsy King, who is the winner of 34 LPGA Tour events, one of the few women who is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and a winning captain of the Solheim Cup when it was played in Sweden.
Also interviewed was Lydell Michell, a former NFL player for the Baltimore Colts and college roommate of Franco’s. Jenny Lidback, who played the LPGA Tour for a number of years was born in Lima, Peru and is the holder of 14 hole-in-ones, gave a great deal
of insight into her love of the game of golf. Our SilverSport/Clearview LPGA Pro-Am was a wonderful event with Franco Harris’s company SilverSport as the title sponsor.
June 23-24 marked the 10th Anniversary of the Pioneer Golf Tournament which hosted nearly 100 golfers from over 15 states. We here at Clearview are so grateful to Jessie Brooks and Ron Fuller for their vision and the solid support of Bob Nicol, Chuck Ellis and Donnie Dunbar in creating this two day tournament to honor a true pioneer in golf, William Powell. If not for my dad many doors in golf would not have been opened and these two gentlemen began to recognize him while he could still enjoy their visits.
This past week The Golf Channel spent 3 days here to film our Clearview HOPE women veterans program which will air later this year. In addition 3 Vietnam Veterans who remembered my fellow LPGA Tour friend Mary Lou Crocker and me from the time we went to Vietnam to visit our troops in 1971. We visited many hospitals and firebase support facilities during our USO Tour and the place the guys remembered us from was Firebase Sherman. It was quite a reunion as these 3 came to meet us and to thank us for taking a part of home to them during a difficult time in their lives and a difficult time in our country.
Doug came from southern Ohio, Rodney from Salisbury, NC and Kevin from Minneapolis. Mary Lou now lives in Dallas, so it was also a ways for her to travel, but no one wanted to miss this special reunion which was 41 years later.
The game of golf has a way of uniting people. Mary Lou and I have been friends since our first USGA Junior Girls Championship in 1962. I made it to the quarterfinals, but she won the Championship, but our friendship has endured.
Good Golfing to all and have a great summer!
