August 24, 2019—Avis Brown-Riley, winner of the 1982 San Diego Women’s Amateur Championship has kept her momentum in sport and in life. A breast cancer survivor, Brown-Riley knows all about knock-downs, setbacks, and perseverance. Today, her strong will is in itself a true miracle. To this end, she tells all about her struggles and accomplishments in the release of her new book, Building of a Champion.

Brown-Riley works as hard on the golf course as she does in her home. Precociously balancing the demands of her sports and domestic lives, the loving wife, and mother of two children has seemingly found a recipe that keeps her focused, productive, and continuously achieving on both ends. Brown-Riley is popular on the social and professional scene and has been recognized for her on-course and life successes with inductions into the San Diego Hall of Champions and the African American Golfers Hall of Fame.

Her latest endeavor, the release her new book a few months ago Building of a Champion is a non-fictional tell-all of the high mountains and deep valleys which has permeated her life. The pages of Brown-Riley’s book takes no shortcuts around the many situations in golf —and in her personal life— which were seemingly at an end. She tells of desperate times when her faith in God was the only hope she could trust. “When my doctor first told me that I had breast cancer, I knew then that God had chosen me as the miracle of life, and I would be reborn again,” she told BlackNews.com “Today, my body is pure, and my skin is as soft as a baby, and it is very hard to see my true age.”
Riley-Brown believes that “God spared my life for a purpose, and this is my story, and my purpose is to share with the world that you must never give up even when someone discourages you, and prepare for roadblocks in your path. God will navigate you through your journey called life. Whatever path you choose, remember to ask God to take your hand and allow him to walk that journey with you. He will never steer you wrong.”
As a golfer, Riley-Brown has accomplished:
- First and only African American woman to ever win the prestigious Junior Wold Golf Championship.
- First and only African American to ever win the San Diego Women’s City Amateur Championship
- First African American to win the National Minority Collegiate Golf Championship
- First, ever African American golfer to participate in the Wickes Andy Williams San Diego Open (and played with Jerry Pate).
- One of few women to ever be inducted into the African American Golfer’s Hall of Fame
