For 25 years, College Career & Beyond | Midnight Golf Program has been helping Detroit-area young people turn ambition into opportunity. Now, the organization is preparing to welcome its next group of students as applications open for the Class of 2027.
According to the organization’s announcement, applicants must be high school seniors in September 2026. All applicants are also required to attend a mandatory Open House presentation on Monday, September 21, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Greater Grace Temple, 23500 W. Seven Mile Road in Detroit. The application deadline is Monday, September 21, 2026.
Founded in 2001 by Reneé Fluker, College Career & Beyond began as the Midnight Golf Program after Fluker saw firsthand how golf had opened doors for her son, Jason. Inspired by his experience, she wanted other Detroit young people—particularly those who might not otherwise have access to golf—to experience the game and the opportunities associated with it.
The program began modestly, with just 17 students meeting at Franklin-Wright Settlements, a Detroit community center. More than two decades later, the initiative has evolved into a comprehensive college-access, mentoring and career-development organization serving approximately 250 students annually.
Golf remains an important part of the program, but it has never been the sole objective. College Career & Beyond uses golf as a vehicle to teach discipline, confidence, focus, perseverance and relationship-building while helping students navigate the transition from high school to college and ultimately into the workforce.
More Than Golf
The organization’s flagship program provides a 30-week experience that combines life-skills development, mentoring, college preparation, academic support, career exposure and professional golf instruction. Students also participate in the Road Trip for Success College Tour, a weeklong experience that exposes them to colleges and universities, including HBCUs, as well as cultural and educational opportunities outside of Detroit.
Mentorship is at the heart of the program. Students are connected with adults who provide guidance, encouragement and real-world advice as they make important decisions about education and their futures.
The organization also stays connected with participants after high school. Its commitment extends through college graduation and into the workforce, reflecting the expanded College Career & Beyond name.
A Record of Success
The numbers demonstrate the program’s impact. College Career & Beyond reports that more than 3,000 students have been helped into postsecondary education, with participants attending more than 160 colleges and universities. The organization currently receives more than 2,000 applications for approximately 250 available spots each year.
The results extend beyond college acceptance. The organization reports a 98% college and postsecondary acceptance rate, while other reporting has documented that approximately 75% of participants earn a college degree within six years—a rate significantly higher than that of their Detroit-area peers.
Over the years, alumni have gone on to careers as educators, doctors, lawyers, corporate executives and professionals in numerous industries. Their achievements represent perhaps the organization’s greatest measure of success.
The organization’s growth has also included a new home in Detroit. In 2025, College Career & Beyond opened its headquarters at 7441 Second Avenue, a historic facility renovated to serve as a center for learning, mentoring and community engagement.
As College Career & Beyond celebrates its 25th anniversary, the opening of applications for the Class of 2027 represents another opportunity to invest in Detroit’s next generation.
The message behind the program remains simple and powerful: golf can open the door, but education, mentorship, perseverance and opportunity can help young people walk through it.
For Detroit-area high school seniors, the Class of 2027 could be the beginning of a journey that extends far beyond the golf course—through college, into a career and beyond.
