For elite athletes, leaving a professional league often means more than stepping away from a sport. It can also mean losing the structure, pressure and purpose of year-round competition. The PRO Tour aims to fill that gap by creating a serious golf circuit exclusively for former professional athletes.
The invitation-only tour is designed for competitors with backgrounds in major professional leagues, including the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL. Rather than positioning itself as a celebrity outing or casual exhibition, The PRO Tour is built around performance. Players arrive with established athletic résumés, but on the course, results stand on their own.
Each tournament is expected to draw roughly 80 invited players for a three-round competition. The format uses Stableford scoring, which awards points for scores relative to par and encourages players to take calculated risks. After two rounds, the leading 60 players continue to the final round. The remaining competitors take part in a separate team shootout that includes guaranteed prize money.
A $500,000 purse is attached to every event, while results also feed into a season-long points race. That cumulative structure gives the tour more than a single-event focus: competitors are rewarded for consistency throughout the season.
Entry is selective. Prospective players must have at least two years of professional playing experience, a verified single-digit golf handicap and a demonstrated commitment to preparing and competing at a high level. Submitting interest does not secure a place in the field; invitations are managed through a rotation process that gives priority to strong finishers while incorporating new eligible athletes.
The season ultimately leads to a 40-player semifinal field. After the first six events, the top eight competitors from each of the four featured leagues qualify, alongside the next eight highest-ranked players overall. The field is then reduced to 30 for the championship, where the season’s top performer is decided.
The PRO Tour also plans a team-focused event, The PRO Cup, inspired by the Ryder Cup. Instead of competing only for individual standing, leading tour players will represent teams in head-to-head matches that place an emphasis on strategy, chemistry and late-round composure.
Founded by Tim Wilbanks and Robert Blevins, with former Major League Baseball standout John Smoltz serving as commissioner, The PRO Tour is backed by Texican Natural Gas Company. Its premise is simple: a professional career may end in one arena, but the desire to compete does not necessarily disappear with it.
