Detroit native and acclaimed R&B singer, songwriter and producer KEM was honored by his hometown on July 23 during the 2nd Annual KEM Day, with the dedication of a secondary street sign bearing his name at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Third Street.
The dedication of “KEM Owens Ave.” marked a deeply personal milestone for the artist, whose life journey has been closely connected to Detroit, including a period of profound hardship that ultimately helped shape his music, faith and commitment to giving back to the community.
The ceremony took place on KEM’s birthday and sober anniversary, making the occasion particularly meaningful. For KEM, the location of the dedication represents far more than a civic honor. It is a place where his life came full circle.
The intersection of MLK Jr. Boulevard—known locally as “Mack”—and Third holds special significance because KEM once lived at the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries there during one of the most difficult periods of his life. Years later, that same intersection became part of his artistic and philanthropic story.
The location is referenced in KEM’s song “Matter of Time” and inspired the creation of his Mack & Third Foundation, an organization established to help address homelessness and provide support to individuals and families experiencing hardship.
For KEM, the street-sign dedication is therefore a powerful reminder of the distance he has traveled.
“I can’t overstate the personal significance that the intersection of MLK Jr. (‘Mack’) and Third holds for me,” KEM said in reflecting on the ceremony. “It’s a real Full-Circle moment.”
From Detroit Hardship to R&B Stardom
KEM’s story is one of perseverance and transformation. Before becoming a successful recording artist, he experienced homelessness and struggled with addiction. Music became an important part of his recovery and personal transformation.
Rather than allowing difficult circumstances to define his future, KEM turned to songwriting and began performing locally. He eventually recorded and financed his own independent music, selling CDs from his car and at local venues.
His determination eventually attracted the attention of Motown Records, which signed him in the early 2000s. His debut album, KEMISTRY, was released in 2003 and introduced audiences to his distinctive blend of contemporary R&B, soul, jazz and adult-oriented romantic music.
The album’s success established KEM as an important new voice in R&B. His follow-up, ALBUM II, released in 2005, generated additional acclaim and included the hit single “You Might Win.”
KEM continued building his career with albums including INTIMACY: Album III, PROMISE TO LOVE, and Love Always Wins. His music has earned Grammy Award nominations and collaborations with some of the industry’s most respected artists.
Among his best-known songs are “Love Calls,” “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” “It’s You,” “Why Would You Stay,” “Nobody,” “You’re on My Mind” and “Share My Life.”
His music has consistently reflected themes of love, relationships, faith, redemption and personal growth—subjects that resonate particularly strongly because of the experiences that shaped his own life.

Reflecting on the honor, KEM expressed gratitude to the people who have supported him throughout his career and personal journey.
“I continue to reflect on the ceremony and the journey that began with, and continues to be built upon the foundation of my love for the City of Detroit,” he said.
He also thanked his longtime supporters, affectionately known as the KEMUNITY, for continuing to stand with him through the years.
“Thank you all for the love and devotion, and for Rocking With Me through the years,” KEM said. “I’m in deep gratitude of your support, and for this magic moment.”
The celebration also comes as KEM continues looking toward the future. The artist revealed that he has been back in the studio working on something special, signaling that new music may be on the horizon.
