LPGA golfer Gladys Lee is receiving well-deserved recognition through three major upcoming events that highlight her extraordinary career, perseverance, and groundbreaking contributions to the sport of golf. From the heart of downtown Fort Worth to the prestigious Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame and the Trilogy of Her Story: Black Women Trailblazers in Fort Worth exhibition, Lee’s legacy is being honored in ways that cement her role as a true pioneer in athletics.
The celebrations began with the MLK Parade in downtown Fort Worth on February 17, 2025, where she served as the Grand Marshal. As she rode through the historic streets, Lee represented more than just her own success—she symbolized resilience, excellence, and opportunity, reflecting the ideals championed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Thousands of spectators lined the parade route, witnessing a moment of inspiration for young girls and aspiring athletes who saw in Lee a reflection of their own dreams. Her presence was more than a tribute to her achievements; it was a powerful reminder that barriers in sports, much like those in society, are meant to be broken.
The recognition continued on February 28, 2025, when Lee was inducted into the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame. This long-overdue honor acknowledges her significant contributions to golf and the opportunities she has created for future generations of Black golfers. Held at the African American Museum in Dallas, the induction ceremony celebrates Lee alongside other distinguished Black athletes and coaches who have left an indelible mark on Texas sports. The evening serves as a time of reflection and gratitude, as Lee shares her journey of overcoming challenges, breaking barriers, and forging new paths in the sport she loves.
In 1996, The Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame was established to honor outstanding black athletes, and coaches from Texas who would not or were not recognized. Many contributions by black athletes and coaches went un-noticed prior to 1996. However, there have been outstanding contributions to the black community by individuals of other races. We make every effort to keep that in mind as we make annual nominations.
