A tragic accident at an Illinois golf course has claimed the life of longtime grounds worker Jay Roush after a riding mower reportedly overturned into a pond at Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Edgar County.
According to authorities, emergency responders were called to the course shortly after noon on Friday after another employee discovered Roush unresponsive and trapped beneath the mower in the water. The Edgar County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as 64-year-old Jay Roush. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said concern grew when Roush stopped answering phone calls during his work shift. A fellow employee began searching the property and eventually located the mower submerged in a pond on the golf course. Officials have not yet determined what caused the machine to enter the water, and the incident remains under investigation.
An autopsy was scheduled as authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident. Local officials have not released additional details regarding possible mechanical issues or environmental conditions at the time of the incident.
The tragedy has shaken the local golf community, where grounds crews play a vital role in maintaining course conditions and daily operations. Golf course maintenance workers often operate heavy machinery on uneven terrain near ponds, bunkers, and steep embankments, making safety procedures critically important.
Eagle Ridge Golf Course, located near Paris, Illinois, has long served area golfers and community events. News of Roush’s death prompted an outpouring of condolences from residents and fellow golf workers familiar with the demands and risks associated with golf course maintenance.
