The dfcu–Serena Golf Club Day has highlighted a growing shift toward sustainability in sport and hospitality, with a new Plastic-Free Golf Initiative aimed at reducing single-use plastics and promoting environmentally responsible practices.
Launched at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa, the initiative is a partnership between dfcu Bank and Serena Hotels focused on encouraging greener lifestyles while tackling the environmental impact of plastic waste across Uganda.

Speaking at the event, dfcu Bank Executive Director and Chief Corporate and Institutional Banking Officer, Kate K. Kizza, emphasized that sustainability must be practical and embedded in everyday actions, not just corporate discussions. She noted that the bank continues to integrate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles into its operations.
dfcu Bank Chairman Jimmy D. Mugerwa also described the initiative as a deliberate step toward aligning business success with environmental responsibility, stressing that sustainability should be viewed as a long-term way of life rather than a slogan.
The campaign will promote reduced use of plastic bottles and packaging during golf tournaments and related events, while encouraging recycling and the adoption of reusable alternatives among golfers, corporate partners, and guests.

Uganda continues to face major challenges linked to plastic waste management, particularly in urban areas and around water bodies such as Lake Victoria. Stakeholders say initiatives like this are increasingly important in supporting national environmental efforts and raising awareness around sustainable consumption.
The Plastic-Free Golf Initiative reflects a broader movement among private sector institutions to integrate sustainability into sports, tourism, and corporate engagement, positioning golf events as platforms for environmental awareness and action.
