The Location | Detroit, Michigan. The North Course, Detroit Golf Club
The Dates | July 26-August 2, 2026
The phrase “the second time around” means an event, experience, or attempt happening all over again after the first time. It often describes a situation where someone gets a new chance to do something with more wisdom.
Many may remember my 2025 experience last year at The Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Ct. Ct. Approaching this familiar situation this year with more maturity, feeling wiser and more at ease, I am excited about Day 1 of the 2026 Rocket Classic.

I feel wiser because I know what “Fluff the Rough” means, more at ease because I am and excited because this year I have with me South Carolina State University graduating Senior Kevin White, Jr who received his Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness with a 4.0 GPA. I must also share that Kevin was on the Dean’s List and an Agricultural Innovation Scholar.

Kevin has a strong interest in turfgrass and golf course operations. He is dedicated, detail-oriented, and eager to expand his knowledge in golf course agronomy, irrigation, turf maintenance, soil management, and landscape operations while wanting to contribute to a high-performing agronomy team.

Yes, The Detroit Golf Club‘s Agronomy team, under the leadership of Sam Moynihan, Director of Agronomy and Darryl Jackson, Deputy Golf Course South Superintendent eagerly awaits meeting Kevin White. Kevin has the talent and skills to one day be a top Golf Course Superintendent, but the chances of this happening for him are slim to none if he never meets the right people and is not put in the right rooms at the best golf courses. You see this week is about Kevin learning more about his trade and about the decision-makers getting to know and learn more about Kevin.
Our experience began today
I am looking forward to our week ahead.
