Herbert Lee Dixon, a beloved father, grandfather, community leader and accomplished golfer, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2026, at the age of 106. Born September 16, 1919, he leaves behind a remarkable legacy of family, faith, perseverance and service to his community.
A longtime resident of Bartow, Florida, Dixon was remembered not only for his love of golf, but also for the wisdom, character and kindness he shared with generations of family, friends and fellow golfers.
Dixon’s connection to the game of golf was an important part of his life and legacy. His accomplishments and contributions earned him recognition as a member of the African American Golfers Hall of Fame (AAGHOF), based in Virginia Beach, Virginia. His life represented an important chapter in the history of African American golf and the generations of golfers who helped create opportunities for others to participate and excel in the sport.
Beyond the golf course, Dixon was a man deeply connected to his family and community. He was affectionately remembered by his children, grandchildren and extended family, who gathered to celebrate a life that spanned more than a century. His family offered heartfelt appreciation to everyone who expressed sympathy, sent flowers, offered words of encouragement, visited and provided support during their time of loss.
A celebration of Dixon’s life was held Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Access Church, 905 S. Broadway Avenue, Bartow, Florida. The service featured reflections from Bishop Willie Watson Jr., overseer of Praise Temple Deliverance Center; Mayor Leo Long of Bartow; Malachi Knowles, founder of the African American Golfers Hall of Fame; and George Young, president of the Bartow Deacon and Stewards Alliance.
The service also included a saxophone musical tribute by Harvey “SaxMan” Lampkin III, musical selections by the Bartow Community Choir, and family reflections. Dixon was remembered by his sons, Lorenzo Dixon, Jonathan Dixon and Samuel Dixon; his daughter, Glenethel Collins; and his grandchildren, Felicia Woods and Joshua Dixon.
The eulogy was delivered by Dr. Tyrinda Dixon, assistant pastor of We’re For Jesus Ministries. Interment followed at Wildwood Cemetery, 800 S. Woodlawn Avenue, Bartow, Florida. A repast celebrating Dixon’s life was held at the Bartow Civic Center, 2250 Floral Avenue. Professional services were entrusted to Gause Funeral Home of Bartow.
At 106 years old, Herbert Lee Dixon leaves a legacy measured not simply in years, but in the lives he touched, the family he nurtured, the community he served and the doors he helped open through his love of golf. His memory will continue to live on through his family, friends and the generations of golfers who follow.
