It’s not so much the bunkers and water hazards golfers need to be wary off, but rather the wildlife that roams freely.
Skukuza Golf Club, nestled within South Africa’s renowned Kruger National Park, offers a golfing experience unlike any other. Established in 1972 for park staff, this 9-hole, 18-tee Par 72 course has since opened its doors to the public, inviting golfers to play amidst the untamed beauty of the African bushveld. The course spans 5,950 meters for men and 5,059 meters for women, challenging players with its unique layout and natural obstacles.
What sets Skukuza apart is its unfenced design, allowing wildlife such as hippos, impalas, warthogs, baboons, and even members of the Big Five to roam freely across the fairways. This integration with nature means golfers might share their game with a curious giraffe or observe a pride of lions in the distance. The signature 9th hole, a par 3, requires a shot over Lake Panic, adding both beauty and challenge to the round.
In 2022, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary with significant upgrades, including new greens and a refurbished clubhouse, enhancing the overall experience while maintaining its rustic charm. Safety remains paramount; daily patrols ensure the course is clear of potential dangers, and all players must sign an indemnity form before teeing off.
