Shady Rest Golf and Country Club occupies a singular place in American history. Established in 1921, it is recognized as the first African American-owned and operated country club in the United States. At a time when segregation shut Black Americans out of most private clubs and golf courses, Shady Rest opened its doors and created a welcoming space where African Americans could gather, compete, socialize, and thrive.
