Golf Instructor Lindsey Mason III Takes His Passion From the Range to the Billboard

by AAGD Staff

For nearly four decades, Lindsey Mason III has dedicated his career to teaching the game of golf while helping young people and adults build confidence, discipline, and opportunity through the sport. As an International PGA Class A Member with 38 years in the Michigan Section, Mason has become one of the most recognizable golf instructors in the Detroit area, offering lessons six days a week at Cherry Creek Golf Club and C.J. Barrymore’s Golf Dome.

Known for his energetic teaching style and commitment to player development, Mason works with students beginning at age three through adulthood. His instruction program focuses on fundamentals, confidence-building, and creating pathways for young golfers to pursue higher levels of competition and education. According to his official Mason Golf profile, he has helped numerous student-athletes earn college golf scholarships while mentoring hundreds of players throughout Michigan and beyond. “I have over 20 high school students on full college golf scholarships throughout the country. What I try to do with my program is to let the youngsters take their game to the next level. Yes, the kids play and have fun, but I want them to improve their opportunities in life”

Mason’s visibility across Metro Detroit reflects the reputation he has built over the years. His golf instruction services are promoted on large electronic billboards located along major Detroit-area corridors, including 8 Mile Road and John R., 9 Mile Road and John R., and near I-75 and I-696 in Hazel Park. Those high-profile advertisements have helped make him one of the area’s most familiar golf personalities, especially among families seeking youth instruction.

At the heart of Mason’s success is a belief that golf can open doors for young people. “What I try to do with my program is to let the youngsters take their game to the next level,” Mason said. “Yes, the kids play and have fun, but I want them to improve their opportunities in life.”

Mason’s teaching career has included work with corporate golf instruction programs and clinics for Detroit Lions rookies. His experience as both a player and instructor has given him credibility among beginners and advanced golfers alike. A low-handicap player himself, Mason combines technical instruction with motivational coaching that emphasizes patience, preparation, and self-belief.  In 2023, Mason was honored as Coach Of The Year by the African American Golfers Hall of Fame.

The Lanny Wadkins-designed facility features an award-winning practice area with a 50-station driving range, multiple putting greens, and short-game practice facilities that provide an ideal environment for instruction. The club has earned recognition as one of the best practice facilities in Southeast Michigan and has hosted numerous notable golf events.

At C.J. Barrymore’s Golf Dome, Mason continues year-round instruction opportunities for students seeking to improve during Michigan’s colder months. His dual-location teaching structure allows him to serve a broad range of golfers across Macomb County and the greater Detroit region.
