In honor of the late James Black, esteemed golfer and legend, the Minority Golf Legends Scholarship of The Junior Tour Powered by Under Armour will undergo a significant renaming. The scholarship will now be known as “The James Black – Charles Sifford and Calvin Peete Minority Golf Legends Scholarship”. Starting from 2024, the revived scholarship program will grant a $2,500 award at all World Championship Events held by The Junior Tour Powered by Under Armour as a tribute to these remarkable individuals, said a July 14th Facebook post by Ray Taranto, The Junior Tour Powered by Under Armour, President.
The scholarship is specifically designed to recognize a deserving minority candidate who embodies the exceptional character, kindness, and generosity exemplified by three legends of golf: James Black, Charles Sifford, and Calvin Peete. To be considered for the award, the recipient must be present at the World Championship event.
“Mr. Black was a dear friend of mine,” says Ray who started the Eastern Shore magazine 15 years ago, at the same time that the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) started its PGA Golf Management Program. UMES is the only HBCU that has this program and guarantees job placement for its graduates.
“We’re excited to keep the memory of these three great men and all the things they went through for the game as pioneers and leaders,” said Ray. He and the recently passed Mr. Black became dear friends over the years, “He had a beautiful swing, was a beautiful man, came to many of our Championships, and he’s going to be missed dearly.”

The Junior Tour Powered by Under Armour is a nationwide youth golf league catering to boys and girls aged 6-18, regardless of their skill levels. Under Armour Junior Golfers participate in a fun, friendly, and competitive environment that fosters skill development and self-confidence. The league operates during the Spring Season (March-May) with a Summer National Championship in June, as well as the Fall Season (September-December) with a Winter National Championship held in February during the Presidents Day Weekend.
