Stephen and Tanya Harris are Jacksonville, Florida natives.  Although he was born and raised in the area for 50 years, Stephen says he’s not a Gators fan —which is rare for his demographics.  However, he is a Jacksonville Jaguars fan by default, because they’re all available to him on a professional level.  Stephen works for G.B. Auto, out of Mesa, Fl. where he is a warehouse manager and been employed with the company for 20 years. Also a former U.S. Marine (1995 – 2002), “The only Army,” says Stephen.  It’s his one man’s opinion anyway.  The veteran has been playing golf since the mid-nineties and enjoys attending tournaments. His wife Tanya works for Comcast Cable Company.

In a 2021 interview with The New York Times, Brandon Johnson articulated his philosophy on golf course design, emphasizing the creation of something “fun, engaging, and interesting strategically.” While this sentiment may sound somewhat conventional — after all, which architect wouldn’t strive for such qualities? — its significance is underscored by Johnson’s tenure alongside Arnold Palmer from 2006 until the golf legend’s passing in 2016.

Collaborating with Palmer and Thad Layton, vice-president and senior golf course architect, Johnson prioritized crafting courses that prioritized enjoyment over the rigors of major championship-style challenges. These were the kind of courses that appealed to everyday golfers, enticing them to return again and again.f

Following Layton’s lead seven months prior, Johnson recently announced the establishment of his own design firm, Brandon Johnson Golf Course Design, headquartered in Mesa, Arizona. While the Arnold Palmer Design Company (APDC) phased out after Layton’s departure, Johnson remained on board until January 19, working on ongoing projects and fulfilling obligations. Now venturing solo, Johnson is poised to step out from under APDC’s shadow and forge his own path.

Reflecting on this transition, Johnson shared with TheFirstCall.com, “It feels like I’m refreshing and renewing my horizons.” With a background in both North Carolina State and Harvard, Johnson honed his skills as a course designer, including an internship with the PGA Tour. His five-year stint as design manager at First Tee, overseeing the development of 250 facilities, further enriched his expertise. Looking ahead, Johnson expressed eagerness to embark on this new chapter, dedicated to creating enjoyable and memorable golf experiences.

When asked about any sentiments of melancholy associated with severing ties with APDC, Johnson remarked, “Sad isn’t really the right word.” While he fondly reminisces about his time with Palmer, he maintains strong ties with the family and clients worldwide. His appreciation for the opportunities afforded by his association with the Palmers is evident, yet he embraces the prospect of charting his course.

Recalling his favorite design collaborations with Palmer, including the renovation of Old Tabby Links at Spring Island and the involvement in Lonnie Poole Golf Club in Raleigh, Johnson stressed his commitment to hands-on involvement in future projects.

While Palmer’s influence looms large, Johnson also draws inspiration from observing figures like Pete Dye during his time with the PGA Tour. He emphasizes the importance of on-site decision-making, a hallmark of effective course design.

Despite his aspirations for strategic complexity, Johnson shies away from creating instantly recognizable features. He aims to explore diverse aesthetics, preferring the focus to be on the overall experience rather than his personal brand.

Collaborating with experts like Sterling Garner, with whom he’s worked on various renovation projects, Johnson underscores the importance of effective communication and maintaining harmony on-site.

As he embarks on projects like the renovation of King’s North at Myrtle Beach National and the master plan for N.C. State’s practice facilities, Johnson remains steadfast in his commitment to creating engaging and enjoyable golf experiences.

At a press conference preceding the 50th Players Championship this week, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan assumed the spotlight, addressing a range of topics and expressing unwavering confidence in the progressing merger deal.

Back in June 2023, Jay Monahan sent shockwaves through the golfing community by striking a deal with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Governor of the Public Investment Fund (PIF). Since then, amidst scrutiny from fans and players alike, Monahan reportedly journeyed to Saudi Arabia recently to expedite negotiations with Al-Rumayyan, signaling a pivotal moment in the merger discussions.

During the press conference held at TPC Sawgrass, Monahan divulged that discussions between the entities are gathering momentum, affirming an optimistic outlook for the monumental deal. Monahan stated, “I recently engaged with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, and our talks are gaining pace… While it will require time, echoing my sentiments from the Tour Championship in August, I foresee a beneficial outcome for the PGA Tour and the sport in its entirety.” Monahan’s confidence in the merger talks finds support from outgoing DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley, although Pelley remained uncertain about the timeline for finalization.

Monahan remained guarded regarding the specifics of the negotiations and the extent of progress made, prompting speculation about whether the merger will conclude before the April deadline or necessitate an extension. As Monahan addressed merger concerns and provided updates on golf matters, inquiries arose about Jon Rahm’s transition to LIV Golf. However, Monahan noticeably sidestepped discussion of the 2023 Masters winner, indicating a potential strain in their relationship.

When probed about the potential exodus of players like Rahm during merger discussions and its implications, Monahan emphasized his focus solely on the PGA Tour’s interests and controllable factors. Regarding Rahm’s departure, Monahan redirected attention to the ongoing Players Championship and the promising season ahead, choosing not to delve into individual player movements.

Rahm, a key figure in the PGA Tour’s standoff with LIV Golf, had initially supported Monahan post-merger announcement despite fan backlash. However, Rahm’s departure to LIV Golf in December 2023, with a lucrative $600 million contract, suggests a shift in dynamics, possibly contributing to the apparent tension between the two parties.

Congratulations to Shyla Brown for winning the 25th Kathy Whitworth Invitational presented by Louella & Nicholas Martin Foundation. The event was held at Mira Vista Country Club, March 10-12 ,and Shyla had rounds of 73 and 69 for a two-day total of even-par 142.

Notably, as a 13-year-old Texas teenager, Shyla gained the distinction of being the youngest Black Junior Golf Champion in history. Her journey began at the age of eight, inspired by her parents’ love for the sport. “My parents both played golf. When you’re young, you tend to pick up what your parents do. I found it enjoyable,” shared the McKinney native with WFAA.

Aside from her golfing prowess, Shyla also excels academically and participates in the marching band. However, her sights are firmly set on a professional golfing career. “I aim to complete my education, turn professional, and not merely join the tour, but strive to become one of the greatest,” she affirmed.
