STEPHEN CURRY’S SECOND ANNUAL UNDERRATED GOLF CURRY CUP AT LAKE MERCED COUNTRY CLUB, AUGUST 20-22
In a whirlwind of golf swings, skill-building, surprises, and camaraderie, the second edition of the Underrated Golf Curry Cup, hosted by none other than Stephen Curry, came to life at Lake Merced Country Club from August 20 to 22. With steadfast support from corporate partners and a determined spirit, the Underrated Golf Tour’s sophomore season concluded with a thunderous victory, crowning Lucky Cruz and Roisin Scanlon as the 2023 Underrated Golf Tour Champions.
Spearheaded by KPMG, the Underrated Golf Tour‘s final stop was nothing short of a golf extravaganza at Lake Merced Golf Club. A cadre of 24 talented boys and girls descended upon the course, ready to vie for the coveted Curry Cup. The competition was fierce, the stakes were high, and the atmosphere was electric.
Underrated Golf had a surprise up its sleeve, showcasing appearances by luminaries such as Underrated Golf Ambassador Mariah Stackhouse, former Golden State Warriors player Andre Iguodala, PGA golfer Brandon Wu, and retired Davidson Basketball Coach Bob McKillop. The festivities didn’t stop there, featuring a CarMax Putting Contest and a fireside discussion that warmed hearts and inspired minds.
After a rollercoaster of a season, filled with intense competitions, skill-enhancing training, enriching education, and enlightening panels, the Underrated Golf Tour reached its grand finale—the Curry Cup. Presented by KPMG, this crescendo was a culmination of dedication, passion, and a celebration of young talent.
The action kicked off on Sunday and Monday, as the chosen 24 participants gathered to put their golf prowess to the test. These young athletes were handpicked after an extensive search across four U.S. cities—West Palm Beach, Akron, Las Vegas, and Seattle—to find the diamonds in the rough, the unsung heroes of the golf world. Flown in from different corners of the country, these finalists converged in the Bay Area to give it their all at the Curry Cup.
Tuesday dawned with an unexpected twist: the appearance of none other than Stephen Curry himself. The basketball legend mingled with the young athletes, adding an extra dash of excitement to the final matches. Amid cheers and high-fives, Lucky Cruz emerged as the top boy, hailing from Magnolia, Texas. On the girls’ side, Roisin Scanlon reigned supreme, journeying all the way from Rushden, England. Beyond the trophies, Cruz and Scanlon secured the opportunity to compete internationally in the upcoming year—an honor that solidified their status as champions.
The Curry Cup ceremony unveiled a game-changing revelation: the Underrated Golf Tour’s expansion on the global stage in its 2024 season (the location remains tantalizingly undisclosed). Joining Scanlon and Cruz on this international adventure are Roman Solomon, Evan Pena, Ashley Shaw, and Krishny Slwin.
The event wasn’t just about the winners; it was a celebration of fortitude, commitment, and potential. Scholarships were bestowed upon standout athletes who embody Underrated Golf’s values. KJ Ofahengaue and Krishny Elwin received the prestigious Dell Curry Scholarship presented by Cisco, each receiving $25,000. Thomas Reid and Myla Robinson walked away with the 2K Foundation’s Merit Award, earning $10,000 each. These scholarships not only reward achievement but also sow the seeds of education for a brighter future.
And what’s a tournament without a bit of fun? CarMax threw a putting contest that pitted all 24 junior golfers against each other. In a delightful twist, Blayne Brown claimed victory for the girls, while Roman Solomon reigned supreme among the boys. Both earned the ultimate prize: tickets to NBA or WNBA games in their hometowns.
LPGA Tour player and KPMG + Underrated Golf brand ambassador Mariah Stackhouse led a “KPMG Leadership Development Day.” The day featured interactive workshops and sessions with leaders across various domains, enriching the student-athletes’ leadership prowess on and off the golf course.
KPMG LLP, the driving force behind this endeavor, aimed to champion equity, access, and opportunity for underrepresented and underrated youth in golf.
Underrated Golf’s accomplishments wouldn’t have been possible without the backing of corporate partners such as PGA, Callaway Golf, Wiz Kid, Subway, AJGA, Golf Pride, 2K Foundation, United Airlines, CDW, Cisco, Chase, and Stephen’s very own Curry Brand under the umbrella of Under Armour.
In a dazzling crescendo of talent, passion, and camaraderie, the second Annual Underrated Golf Curry Cup proved that these young athletes are anything but underrated.

The Howard University golf team celebrated a milestone as they made their television debut, featuring as cast members in the critically acclaimed series “Why Not Us.” This remarkable production was brought to life by Andscape, FILM 45, and ESPN+ Originals. The series premiered on Monday, August 21, with episodes one through four airing on ESPNU. Additionally, these episodes became immediately accessible for streaming on ESPN+.
Titled “Why Not Us: Howard Golf,” the series delves into the lives of both coaches and student-athletes. It chronicles their journey filled with triumphs and challenges as they navigate the path of a young Division I program. Their overarching goal is to bring national awareness and diversity to the world of golf.
Brian Lockhart, Vice President of Original Content, expressed his admiration for the Howard University golf team and Stephen Curry, emphasizing the inspiration they bring to the project. He noted that through the “Why Not Us” series, they aimed to shed light on HBCU culture and celebrate the institutions’ rich history while forging new legacies.
The Howard University golf program had been inactive for nearly half a century until Stephen Curry stepped in to revive it in 2021. The results achieved since then have exceeded all expectations.
Kendall Jackson, a junior majoring in sports management with a minor in economics hailing from Houston, Texas, is a member of the women’s golf team. She chose Howard because she saw an opportunity to make history. In her words, “I chose to play golf at Howard because I knew I had an opportunity to make history. My first year was the inaugural season of the women’s team. Also growing up in predominantly white spaces, the opportunity to attend the most prestigious HBCU and be surrounded by so many driven, passionate, and elite people of color, on top of having a chance to meet NBA superstar, Stephen Curry, the opportunity was too good to pass up.”
According to ESPN, in the three years since the program’s revival, the men’s golf team secured victory in the PGA Works Collegiate Championship (PWCC) and clinched the HBCU national title for the second consecutive year, outperforming North Carolina A&T by a staggering 57 strokes.
In just their second year of existence, the Howard women’s golf team earned recognition with three players making it to the 2023
All-American Scholar Team. The team also set its sights on a Northeast Conference championship.
Maya Brown-Edwards, a 2022 Howard University graduate and current ESPN Production Assistant, contributed to the production of the series. She emphasized the significance of doing justice to the university’s golf program. She said, “Being part of ‘Why Not Us: Howard Golf,’ especially as an alumna, is surreal and truly honoring. We, the producers at ESPN knew we had a gem on our hands and worked diligently to ensure the Howard Golf story was told authentically and to the highest standard.”
For the students of Howard University, this opportunity to be featured on ESPN is monumental. While the platform has the potential to work wonders for the university, many expressed their excitement about reaching a larger audience.
Raquel Simpson, a senior majoring in political science with a minor in journalism, is featured in the series for her role as the social media manager. She is thrilled about the impact this series will have on young Black golfers. Simpson stated, “This story will impact young Black golfers because it will show them that possibilities are limitless. Our program started from complete scratch and within three years we achieved so much great merit and success. I would hope young black golfers watching this know that they can achieve their goals both in the golf space and academic space, as institutions like HBCUs help amplify and excel students from our community.”

Tiger’s Impact Evident as Policy Board Explores PGA-LIV Deal, Says McIlroy
Hold onto your golf hats, folks, because Tiger Woods is strutting his stuff on the PGA Tour policy board like a pro – and it’s only been a mere two weeks! Rory McIlroy spilled the beans with a twinkle in his eye on Wednesday.
Imagine this scene: the 15-time major champion, decked out in his golf gear, gets himself a snazzy spot on the expanded policy board. The PGA Tour declared it with grandeur on August 8, just a day after 41 players raised their hands in a “Hey, let’s do this!” letter to PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan. It was like the coolest clubhouse move ever, according to Yahoo Sports.
Why, you ask? Well, apparently the tour wanted a sprinkle of transparency and a dash of zen vibes. Players were as perplexed as squirrels trying to figure out a Rubik’s Cube about the whole PGA-LIV deal, cooked up by Monahan and Yasir al-Rumayyan, the grand poobah of LIV’s backers, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).
But wait, here comes Tiger Woods, the sixth player to crash this policy board party. It’s like having the king of the jungle join your treehouse club. And guess what? Now the players are the board majority. Hold onto your visors, because this panel needs to give the nod to the PGA’s snazzy agreement with the PIF by the time the year wraps up like a Christmas present.
Rory McIlroy, the mouthpiece of the moment, couldn’t help but chuckle as he dished out the scoop. “Tiger being on the board, it’s like having a golf wizard who’s all in,” McIlroy laughed. “He’s more into it than I am into my post-round snacks.”
Apparently, Woods has been chit-chatting with everyone in sight. It’s like he’s on a golf-politics world tour, spreading wisdom like confetti at a parade. He’s determined to whip up the best outcome for all the PGA Tour players, and let’s face it, who can say no to Tiger?
McIlroy, with his eyebrows raised like he’s just heard a hole-in-one story that’s too good to be true, gushed, “You can already feel Tiger’s magical touch. And I’m not just talking about his golf swing. This is some serious, behind-the-scenes hocus-pocus.”
And what’s the whole hoopla about, you ask? A deal that’s about to brew up a for-profit entity involving the flashy LIV Golf League, the PGA, and the DP World Tour. But hold onto your visors again, because the nitty-gritty details are locked up tighter than a golfer’s handshake after a bogey.
Monahan dropped some hints on Tuesday like breadcrumbs on a treasure hunt, saying that he’s super-duper confident that they’ll have an agreement by the time 2023 waves goodbye with a golf clap.
But here’s the juicy bit: What’s going to happen to LIV and all those players who ditched the PGA Tour for bigger bags of gold and guaranteed deals? It’s like a golf-themed soap opera, folks, with more twists and turns than a fairway in a windstorm.
McIlroy, like the sage of the clubhouse, spilled the beans that not all the players on the board have to agree like they’re picking a restaurant for dinner. “It’s not like we’re voting on pizza or tacos. It just needs a thumbs-up from the majority. Democracy, baby!”
McIlroy let slip that all this wheeling and dealing had him in a tizzy. But hey, he’s been mastering the art of juggling boardroom shenanigans with top-notch golf. He even won the Scottish Open and strutted his stuff with a second place finish at the US Open. Clearly, he’s turning policy into birdies.
“Last year was like a roller coaster, with golf world mysteries at every turn,” McIlroy chuckled. “But now, it’s like we found the treasure map and we’re navigating our way through the golf jungle. It’s all a bit more settled now. Like hitting a hole-in-one and just casually walking off the green.”
So there you have it, folks. Tiger Woods is shaking things up on the PGA Tour policy board like a true legend. And while we’re still in the dark about the deal details, one thing’s for sure: with Tiger and this bunch of golf mavericks, the game’s future is as bright as a freshly polished golf ball. Swing on, heroes of the fairways, swing on!
In the sprawling greens of the Gateway Golf Course in Montgomery, Alabama, two remarkable young African American junior golfers, Miqwez and Jamarion Green, have embarked on a transformative journey that is changing not only their lives but also their perception of what’s possible. With perseverance, talent, and community support, these brothers are proving that the game of golf can transcend circumstances and pave the way to a brighter future.
Gateway to a New Passion
It all began with a chance encounter at the Gateway Golf Course. Introduced to me by a staff member, Miqwez Green’s story took shape. He initially visited the golf course for fishing but soon found himself wielding a golf club. Recognizing a latent gift, he was provided with a putter to explore the game further. Upon observing his swing, it was evident that Miqwez possessed a natural talent that warranted nurturing.
Miqwez’s younger brother, Jamarion, joined the golfing journey later. Inspired by the dedication of his brother, he too ventured onto the greens. What followed was a testament to their commitment. Regardless of their challenging home environment and lack of stable housing, the brothers diligently made their way to the golf course every day, practicing for hours on end. Their resilience and passion became their compass, guiding them through adversity.

From Novices to Competitors
Having only discovered golf in September of 2022, the Green brothers swiftly transformed into formidable players. Their dedication led them to participate in various golf tournaments, where their skills developed exponentially. What stood out was not just their progress in golf, but the positive influence the sport had on their lives. Their story touched the hearts of many in the community.
The Leo Golf Academy, St. Paul AME Church, Gateway Park, the Driving Force Women’s Golf Club, and Valiant Cross Academy rallied around Miqwez and Jamarion. These organizations and compassionate individuals saw the potential within the brothers and offered unwavering support to help them pursue their golfing dreams.
Turning Greens into a Brighter Future
Miqwez’s enrollment at Valiant Cross Academy, facilitated by the guidance of the school’s head, Mr. Brock, marks a significant step in his journey. With their newfound stability and a nurturing environment, the Green brothers are thriving. Their journey underscores the power of sport in molding character, determination, and a sense of purpose.
Coach LEO, an instrumental figure in the brothers’ golfing trajectory, shares his perspective. “These young men have tapped into golf as a means of changing their lives and their surroundings,” he says. The transformative impact of their dedication is evident as their tournament scores continue to plummet.
As the Green brothers persist in their golfing journey, they are a testament to the profound influence of sport on personal growth and community solidarity. Their story resonates far beyond the fairways, reminding us that through resilience, passion, and support, even the most challenging circumstances can be surmounted. The future of Miqwez and Jamarion Green shines brightly, illuminating a path that bridges dreams with reality through the unwavering pursuit of golf.
