USGA, R&A propose plan to roll back the golf ball for pro players
The USGA and R&A have proposed modifying testing conditions for golf balls used in elite competition via a model local rule, which would come into effect by January 2026. The proposed changes would alter launch conditions to reduce hitting distances at the game’s highest levels. The governing bodies plan to change the conditions for determining if a ball conforms to the overall distance standard, reducing the average driving distance of elite players by 14 to 15 yards.
The proposed MLR would not affect the recreational game, and other organizations, tours, and tournaments would have the option to employ it. While there has been talk of bifurcation, the USGA maintains that this is not the start of two different sets of rules, but simply an option around a piece of equipment. The changes are not designed to curb the more modest distance averages produced by the majority of golfers worldwide, and there is a chance that the MLR could benefit low club speeds and beginners by allowing for the removal of the initial velocity test.
“Hitting distances at the elite level of the game have consistently increased over the past 20, 40, and 60 years. It’s been two decades since we last revisited our testing standards for ball distances,” USGA CEO Mike Whan said. “Predictable, continued increases will become a significant issue for the next generation if not addressed soon. The MLR we are proposing is simple to implement, forward-looking and does so without any impact on the recreational game. We are taking the next steps in this process, guided first and foremost by doing what’s right by the entire game.”
The initial areas of interest, posted a year ago, aimed at golfers of all skill levels and proposed various potential changes, including ball size and mass, club lengths and clubhead dimensions, and a reduction in the overall distance standard. Tuesday’s update, however, focuses solely on the ball and proposes stricter regulations on the clubface, specifically with reducing MOI and the spring-like effect.
Chris Word, CEO, Greenwood Golf, weighs in on the subject saying, “As a golf ball company ourselves, Greenwood GOLF believes that this rule will have limited impact on the game of golf. In fact, it may work to improve the game by making it more competitive in elite competitions. The fact is, the USGA already has performance requirements that golf balls must meet in order to use during competitive play, one of which includes a flight restriction under certain performance metrics (higher swing speed, launch angles, etc.). Effectively, this new rule is adjusting the flight restriction down a little more to help offset the advancing technology and player performance. There are a lot of parts to the game of golf. Driving distance albeit fun does not determine overall skill level or score. Our signature Greenwood GOLF ball is not designed for distance but aimed to provide the golfers with better accuracy around the green because that is where the game is won.”
The effort of the USGA and R&A are in response to the 2020 Distance Insights Project, which found that golf’s distance boom was harming the game, particularly by lengthening golf courses. Some of golf’s most influential figures, including Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley, support the effort to address the issue of distance. However, not all parties view the issue of distance through the same lens, and equipment manufacturers are expected to push back.
The USGA and R&A have stressed that they are not considering changes that would reduce distance at all levels, and the proposed MLR would enable golf event organizers and committees to use specific balls for certain elite championships and tournaments but would not impact the current recreational game. The USGA and R&A believe that their role is to protect the future of golf, both in terms of its overall integrity as a sport, its broad mix of skills to deliver excellence, and its environmental responsibilities over the next 20 to 30 years.

Golf is one of the most popular sports in the world today. Millions of people worldwide watch, practice, and play golf. The game’s popularity is biggest in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. In the USA, the sport has reached unprecedented levels of fame, with some of the country’s best sportsmen being golfers. In this article, we would like to pay respect to the numerous black athletes that have swung the club. So, without further ado, let us look at three of the best African-American golfers of all time.
Tiger Woods
Was there any doubt that Tiger Woods would make this list? Not only is he one of the best African-American golfers, he is one of the best golfers of all time, if not the best. For a long time, Novibet sports betting websites placed Tiger Woods as the odds-on favorite to win any golf tournament in which he was involved. Golf betting is surprisingly popular, mainly because a game takes place no matter the season. So, the fact that Tiger Woods’ success was so momentous is quite the achievement.
And speaking of achievements, let’s go over some of Woods’ most notable ones. He holds the joint-record for most PGA Tour wins, he currently ranks second in men’s golf (behind Jack Nicklaus), he holds a whole slew of golf records, and has been inducted in the Golf Hall of Fame. In 2019, he was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contribution to American sports and culture. Without a doubt, he is deserving of a spot on the list of the greatest golfers of all time.
Jim Thorpe
Jimmy Lee Thorpe is without a doubt one of the greatest players in the world of golf. At 74, he is still going strong, playing golf in the Champions Tour. He began playing professionally in 1972, meaning that his career spans five decades. Mr. Thorpe’s accomplishments are numerous. In the 1980s, he won three PGA Tours.
However, his skills have only strengthened at the senior level. Since playing in the seniors he has won over ten tournaments, and has ranked among the top ten in the Champion’s tour career money list. In 2010, Thorpe was charged with tax evasion, for which he served a year in prison. Upon being released, he has been playing in the Champions Tour, still ranking among the best golfers.
Lee Elder
One of the most important figures in the history of golf, Lee Elder was the first African-American to play in the Masters Tournament. In 1974, Elder played in the Monsanto Open, and won the tournament. This achievement earned him an invitation to the Masters. His victory at Monsanto was the first of four major PGA Tour wins.
In 1976 he won the Houston Open, and two years later he won the Greater Milwaukee Open and the American Express Westchester Classic. He has also won eight Senior PGA Tour competitions, and has a 3 – 0 PGA Tour playoff record. Certainly, he is one of the best and most important golfers in African-American history.

Tiger Woods and Ex-Girlfriend Erica Herman’s Legal Battle Heats Up, “Locked Out of Residence”
Tiger Woods’ attorneys have filed a motion in a Florida court, denying that he ever had a written or oral tenancy agreement with his ex-girlfriend Erica Herman. The motion was filed in response to Herman’s complaint against a trust that Woods controls, the Jupiter Island Irrevocable Homestead Trust, alleging that he violated the Florida Residential Landlord Tenant Act. In the complaint, Herman claimed that Woods tricked her into packing a suitcase for a short holiday and then locked her out of where she was living when she returned. She also claimed that she had a verbal tenancy agreement with Woods, which had five years remaining, to share his Jupiter residence.
However, Woods’ attorneys dispute Herman’s claim, stating that during their relationship, Woods had invited Herman to live with him as his guest in the Residence. They further stated that Woods had never negotiated an oral tenancy agreement with Herman, nor was there ever a written tenancy agreement between Woods or the Trust and Herman. Woods had never transferred to Herman any ownership interest or rights of possession to the Residence, according to the court documents. The relationship getting lots of attention and generating a popular stir, such as Bitcoin News.
In addition, the court documents state that Woods had offered Herman assistance in finding a new residence and accommodation in a luxury hotel in the meantime. On October 13, 2022, Woods informed Herman that he was breaking off their relationship and that she was no longer welcome in the Residence. Woods arranged for Herman to stay at a local luxury resort and provided funds that she could apply toward a new residence.
It is important to note that Herman’s complaint against Woods is separate from another complaint she filed earlier in the week in Florida. In that complaint, she seeks to nullify a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) that she signed in 2017. Herman’s attorneys have argued that the NDA is unenforceable under the Speak Out Act, which was signed into law last year. The act prevents the enforcement of NDAs in instances of sexual assault or harassment.
The legal battle between Woods and Herman has been ongoing since October 2021 when Herman first filed her complaint against Woods. In her complaint, she alleged that Woods had breached their contract by locking her out of their shared residence. She also claimed that Woods had damaged her reputation by spreading false rumors about her. Woods has denied all of Herman’s claims and has filed a countersuit against her.
The legal battle between Woods and Herman is just one of the many controversies that Woods has faced over the years. Woods has been a controversial figure in the world of sports due to his personal life, which has been marred by infidelity and multiple public scandals. Despite this, Woods remains one of the most successful golfers of all time, with 15 major championship wins and numerous other accolades to his name.
Scottie Scheffler Wins Player’s Championship, while Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association is Transforming Lives
Looks like Scottie Scheffler is a lock to wrap-up the winners share of this year’s Player’s Championship. The richest purse on the PGA Tour, therefore those who are fighting for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place still has plenty at stake to play for. 2nd place alone pays over $2 million dollars.
I don’t like to get too ahead of myself with plenty of golf left at TPC Sawgrasss, but number two player in the world Scottie Scheffler is more than a confident front runner. Like Yogi Berra used to say, “it ain’t over, til it’s over,” but it’s over, trust me.
Congratulations to Scottie Scheffler in advance for playing an amazing four rounds of golf, on a very tough golf course.
Now it’s on to Augusta to defend his title from 2022. I, for one, wouldn’t be surprised if he repeats. He’s just that good. No brag, just facts.

Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association (OMYGA)
The OMYGA has served the community since 1991. Its mission is to acquaint inner city and urban minority youth with the sport of golf in order that they may reap the rewards of the game. Jariah Beard Sr., Augusta National caddie who was on the bag for Fuzzy Zoeller’s victory in 1979, dies at 82
Mr. Jariah Beard Sr., 82, entered into rest on Friday, March 3, 2023. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel on the campus of Paine College with Rev. Dr. R. F. Telester Leverett officiating. The interment will be at Westover Memorial Park.
Jariah “Bubba” Beard, a longtime Augusta National caddie, famously caddied for Fuzzy Zoeller when he won the 1979 Masters, becoming the most recent first-time participant to win the tournament. Zoeller, a rookie golfer at the time, praised Beard’s expertise in clubbing, yardage, and reading greens, and credited him with leading him to victory.
Beard was born on January 19, 1941, in Columbia County and moved to Augusta, Georgia, at a young age. He began caddying at the age of twelve when he was introduced to the game of golf. A graduate of Lucy Craft Laney High School, his path to the caddie yards at Augusta National was unusual. He served as an apprentice caddie at Augusta Country Club at the age of 11 and graduated to Augusta National at 16, gaining a steady job at the Masters Tournament that lasted 40 years.
From 1957 to 1983, he caddied for a variety of players, including Bob Toski (known as “The Mighty Might”, who later became a world-renowned golf instructor), Doug Sanders, and Don January, with whom he caddied with for nearly thirteen years. Beard was known as the unofficial historian of Augusta National caddies and had a deep knowledge of the caddies’ nicknames, family members, and the influence they had on winning players’ games.
Beard continued working for Zoeller at the Masters tournament until 1983, when the ban on non-Augusta caddies was lifted, making Beard, and many other Black caddies essentially unemployable. Since that time, he has never worked another Masters. Zoeller called Beard a “very special person” and reached out to him before his death to express his gratitude for their times together. Beard passed away due to cancer, one month before the 2023 Masters.
Beard is a revered figure in the world of golf and is widely regarded as one of the greatest caddies of all time. His remarkable story is chronicled in Ward Clayton’s book, “MEN ON THE BAG, The Caddies of Augusta National,” where he is ranked as the seventh-best caddie. In addition, Beard is featured in the upcoming film “Loopers” The Caddie’s Long Walk, set to premiere in select theaters on June 7th.
In addition to caddying, Jariah was also an accomplished golfer. He participated in several golf tournaments over the years and won the Jim Dent Invitational at Forest Hill Golf course in 1991, which he considers his greatest achievement. Despite having potential as a golfer, he chose not to pursue a career in the sport due to his responsibilities as a husband and father of five children. To do so —loving the extra cash that caddying brought in— he worked the night-shift at International Paper as a filter-plant operator. The well-paying job that allowed him to support his family. He would arrange to take his vacation time from the plant during Masters Week, so he could caddie.
In September 2017, Beard was honored by the African American Golfer’s Digest as an “Outstanding Leader In Golf“
Beard was preceded in death by his wife, Gracie Beard. Survivors of Beard are his children, Prudence (Lee) Ingram, Eric Beard, Stephanie (Timothy Sr.) Cook, Jariah (Shatara) Beard, Jr. and Leonardo Beard; eleven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; sister, Jennie Warren; brother, Rev. Dr. R. F. Telester Leverett; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Please send cards to the family of Jariah Beard, Sr. 2707 Oakland Ave. Augusta, GA 30909. Williams Funeral Home, 1705 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Augusta, GA handled the arrangements.
Swing Strong: Using Pilates to Prevent Golf Injuries and Improve Performance
By Dr. Femi, Club Pilates trainer and doctor of Physical Therapy.
Pilates has been found to be a great form of strengthening for various physical activities; however, the least thought-about activity that would benefit from Pilates is golfing! Due to the high levels of rotational power required from one’s lower extremity and core, Pilates can be utilized to optimize these muscle groups.
Starting with the core, specifically the core rotators such as the obliques, are essential. That’s because you are generating optimal force during a swing. When these muscles are weak, other muscle groups in the core compensate for this, leading many golfers to back injuries.
In regards to hip strength and mobility, golfers need optimal hip joint range of motion as well as stability strength. In order to consistently generate high amounts of force so one could hit a ball with power and accuracy. Lastly, shoulder girdle stability and strength is essential as the upper extremity is the final link to distribute force to one’s golf club for the perfect stroke.
Shown here is an exercise of various moves that are great for improving shoulder girdle, core, and hip strength/endurance. All exercises can be done in 3 sets of 10, and if one doesn’t have a Reformer or can get to a studio, an exercise theraband can be utilized instead.
KNEELING TRUNK ROTATION
Focuses on maintaining head, neck, shoulders, and hands centrally while resisting reformer with oblique/core muscles and helps improve rotational power. Be sure to check with your doctor before performing any exercise.
How to perform:
- Begin by kneeling with knees shoulder width apart.
- Maintain head, neck, and shoulders in the center of the chest.
- On the exhale rotate up and over while keeping hands centrally to head, neck, shoulder alignment.
- Turn and repeat on the other side.
KNEELING SHOT PUT (above)
Focuses on proper shoulder and neck alignment while resisting reformer with oblique/core muscles – helps improve rotational core power and shoulder girdle power.
How to perform:
- Begin by kneeling with knees shoulder width apart.
- Maintain head, neck and shoulders in the center of the chest.
- Bend elbow of arm holding strap/band.
- On the exhale rotate and press through the strapped hand until turned and facing the footbar.
- Turn and repeat on the other side.
