Each school receives $10,000 for student-athletes, coaches and equipment to fly United and compete in tournaments across the country

Program addresses one of the biggest barriers to golf programs’ growth and success: limited access to funds for air travel 

CHICAGO, Feb. 7, 2022 – United Airlines along with the PGA TOUR today announced that United will award 51 golf teams at Historically Black Colleges and Universities with more than half a million dollars in grants, divided equally among the schools, to fund travel for golf tournaments and recruiting efforts. The donation is part of United Airlines and the PGA TOUR’s shared commitment to diversify and grow the sport and provide resources that allow HBCUs to recruit and compete at the highest levels of collegiate golf. Each school will receive $10,000 in travel credits, enabling more than 250 student-athletes, coaches and their equipment to fly United to compete in high-profile tournaments that were previously out of reach. HBCU golf coaches attribute the lack of access to air travel among the greatest barriers to developing successful golf programs.

 “Removing barriers for HBCU students to have the same opportunities given to other collegiate athletes will open doors for countless young Black golfers to achieve their dreams and for HBCU golf programs to develop to their full potential,” said United President Brett Hart. “United is committed to advancing inclusion and racial equity and that begins with making meaningful mentorship and scholarship investments in the communities we serve.”

These grants will allow each team the opportunity to attend more tournaments this season, including events like the prestigious PGA Works Collegiate Championship, Mardi Gras Golf Invitational and Black College Golf Coaches Association Houston National Invitational. Previously, many HBCU golf teams would not have the resources to compete at these events or would have to drive, which requires student-athletes to take multiple days away from school.

“The golf program at Winston-Salem State University came back to the school for the first time in 10 years last fall. This year, the United Airlines grant will impact our program’s ability to travel tremendously,” said Winston-Salem State University Head Golf Coach Charles Penny, II. “It now allows for our program to consider more tournaments to play in the fall. Specifically, this past fall, we were only able to play one tournament due to limitations in our travel budget. This fall, we will be able to add close to four.”

For the student-athletes, the opportunity to compete in more tournaments isn’t just about improving their game – the relationships they build off the course with mentors and golf and industry professionals can make a difference in their ability to pursue the sport as a career.

“We are super grateful and excited to have the support of United Airlines to make for excellent and safe travel to our tournaments,” said Christyn Carr, a golfer at North Carolina A&T State University. “It gives us the freedom to compete in different states that we have not been able to go to before, and it allows us to have more time on the course than on the road. I’m looking forward to reaching new heights this semester, not only in our game but in our travel.”

United is the “Official Airline of the PGA TOUR,” and the organization’s first sponsor to support the TOUR’s larger HBCU Grant Program. Developed in early 2021 by the TOUR’s HBCU task force, the program aims to leverage the TOUR’s partner network in order to offset the financial burdens many HBCU golf programs face.

“On behalf of the PGA TOUR, I’d like to express my appreciation to longtime partner United Airlines for their support of HBCU golf programs and the many collegiate golfers who will benefit going forward,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “We have made a pledge to help diversify the landscape of competitive golf and this collaboration between United Airlines and these colleges and universities will be a significant step towards leveling the playing field and enhancing the student-athlete experience along the way.”

In addition to travel grants, student athletes will have access to mentorship and career coaching from United employees. ORLANDO, Fla. (Feb. 9, 2022) – Doug Smith and Will Lowery, hosts of NBC Sports’ Beyond the Fairway podcast, are partnering with leading tee-time provider GolfNow to celebrate Black History Month through social storytelling throughout February.

The NBC Sports Next initiative, titled The Next Round,” can be found on Instagram – watch the first post here – with additional exposure on Twitter and Facebook. The campaign features video conversations throughout the month with change-makers who are making an impact across the golf industry.

Smith and Lowery are both professional golfers who welcome celebrities, athletes and golf influencers to their weekly NBC Sports podcast, which examines golf from a cultural perspective. Lowery, a two-time cast member on the popular GOLF Channel reality series, Big Break, competes regularly on the mini-circuit and advocates for minorities through production and content creation in the entertainment space. Smith was the first African American to play golf at the University of Louisville and won the 2005 PGA National Minority Collegiate Championship during his time as a Cardinal.

“People have to see themselves represented if they are going to feel welcome in any space, including the golf course,” said Smith. “We want to put the spotlight on a few people who are helping to make golf more diverse and accessible but haven’t always had the platform to share their insight.”

“Our goal for this campaign is to highlight culture, education and opportunity,” said Lowery. “You can’t be what you don’t see, and we want to recognize those people who have a passion for our game and pay homage to the positive changes they’ve made.”

The GolfNow social media campaign featurea clips of video discussions between Smith and Lowery and golf industry professionals making a difference, including:

• Steven Outlaw, Director of Golf at Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club, who started his unlikely journey in golf from his hometown of East Chicago, Ind., and later gave a speech at the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001 that helped launch The First Tee Scholars Program. He has seen firsthand through The First Tee program the impact that golf can have on an individual and how it can change lives.
• Rachel Melendez-Mabee, an expert in multi-cultural marketing and program specialist for PGA Works, a strategic initiative designed to diversify the golf industry’s workforce.
• Jamie Taylor, an entrepreneurial golf instructor who launched JT Mobile Training in 2018 and founded the Black Golf Directory, which helps golfers find African American golf professionals, amateurs, juniors and businesses.

The Next Round is part of Better Together, an NBC Sports Next initiative that strengthens communities and culture through focused programs promoting inclusion and equity through education, resources and community impact. NBC Sports Next also is helping to generate funds throughout February for the Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association (OMYGA) through its TeeOff tee-time booking platform and round-up technology, which generated more than $1 million for charity in 2021.

“A part of Better Together’s mission is to highlight and support educational awareness opportunities surrounding racial disparities in the golf industry,” said Jerramy Hainline, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Golf, NBC Sports Next. “The Next Round is exactly the type of initiative we want to bring attention to – to help bring about the social and economic change that will impact the landscape of golf.”

Historically Black Colleges and Universities, commonly referred to as HBCUs, first emerged in the 19th century as an avenue for black students to pursue an education that had been denied to them by historically white institutions of higher learning. Their initial mission was to provide training and education for teachers and tradesmen. More than 150 years later, HBCUs offer full curricula – liberal arts, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degrees. 

HBCUs also offer lower tuition, increased minority access to STEM-related careers, and a thriving, supportive community and cultural experience for their students. They have long fielded impressive and accomplished football, basketball and baseball programs with a track record of placing athletes in the NFL, NBA and MLB. Super Bowl champions like Walter Payton, Deacon Jones, Shannon Sharpe and Michael Strahan all went to HCBUs. NFL and MLB star Deion Sanders now shines a bright light on HBCU football as the head coach of Jackson State. They’ve even made it into bestselling fiction. John Grisham’s novel Sooley was about a basketball star who plays at an HBCU. 

But these athletic accomplishments, real and fictionalized, have not yet extended to collegiate golf, particularly on the women’s side.

Currently, only fourteen of the 107 HBCUs even have women’s golf programs. 

The PGA Tour has recognized this long-standing disparity and has taken steps to try to address it. Last September, the PGA Tour selected Delaware State as one of four HBCUs to receive a $100,000 grant for its men and women’s golf teams. This was an important step in the tour’s mission to grow the game among minorities. 

Delaware State head women’s golf coach Rick McCall plans to use the grant for scholarships and to recruit new talent. Part of the grant will also be used to introduce golf to elementary schools by having his players actively promote the game. McCall’s players will not only teach golf skills but will focus on the game’s values. Coach McCall wants his players to serve as mentors and, more importantly, as role models for the youth in the Delaware State community.

Delaware State launched its golf program only nine years ago. But the evolution has been clear.  McCall quickly grasped the type of player he sought to fill his roster. Talent is an obvious component. But he also searches for well-rounded students who wish to have a full college experience. 

He still has trouble capturing the attention of a large pool of girls looking to play collegiately.   

The well-rounded college career pitch attracted Delaware State sophomore Amber Pennington. Introduced to golf by her father at the age of four, Pennington played her first tournament at age nine. Her father, who taught himself the game, passed his passion for golf on to his daughter. 

When being recruited by several colleges during her sophomore and junior years of high school, Pennington knew that she wanted to attend an HBCU. Coming from a small, rural, and predominantly Caucasian town in upstate New York, she recalls feeling out of place. She envisioned attending a college that would allow her to celebrate and share in her African American heritage with other student-athletes while playing the game she loves. Pennington added that a lot of players choose HBCUs for similar reasons–-not merely for the college experience but also to experience a college with a more familiar culture.

Attending a golf tournament can be a wonderful experience but be sure to know that behind every successful tournament there was a Tournament Director of Tournament Planner who was directly responsible for the success of the event.

15. Start 6 months in advance to give yourself plenty of time.
16. Do NOT spend more than you bring in.
17. Stay in touch with golfers and sponsors throughout the year.

Malachi Knowles, a Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame member and the founder of Inner-City Youth Golfers, Inc. has been named as the Junior Golf Director for the Sunshine State Amateur Golfers Association (SSAGA). The SSAGA is the only principally African American statewide association of male and female golfers in the United States. Nine clubs currently comprise the association and approximately 1,000 golfers of all ethnicities from Daytona Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Pierce, Miami (two clubs), Orlando, Titusville, Sebring and West Palm Beach.

With the support of the SSAGA Board of Directors, Malachi is on a mission to “grow the game of golf through its current member clubs and start or partner with existing programs in other cities such as Tampa, Naples/Ft. Myers, St. Petersburg, Sarasota, Lakeland, Pensacola, Tallahassee, and St. Augustine to form the membership.”

Malachi Knowles has been involved in the game of golf since he was 10 years old when he began working as the “shag boy” at Everglades Country Club in Palm Beach. Knowles went on to attend Morgan State College in Baltimore, Maryland. At Morgan State, he worked with the athletic director to establish a golf team in 1960 that he captained for three years. After graduation, he went on to become the first African American to graduate with a master’s degree in regional and city planning from the University of Oklahoma. Knowles would go on to hold several executive positions with the government from 1965 to 1991.

In 1993, he returned to his home, Riviera Beach, Fla to found Inner-City Youth Golfers at JFK Middle Magnet School with a mission of combining golf and education to positively impact local youth. In 2004, he founded the African American Golfers Hall of Fame and later – the African American Collegiate & Youth Golfers Hall of Fame – all based in Riviera Beach, Fla. to provide future generations of golfers with role models within the sport. He was inducted into the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. He currently serves on the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Board of Directors.

Harold Varner III (-13) made a walk-off eagle putt on the 72nd hole of the Saudi International on Sunday. Varner beat Bubba Watson (-12) by a stroke to lock up the second professional win of his career in 224 starts. the 31-year-old North Carolina native pulled out the most spectacular finish to claim the $1 million prize money.

Varner led going into the final round but was 1 over on the day when he stepped to the par-5 closing hole, one back of new leader Bubba Watson, who was in the house with a round-of-the-day 66. Nobody else on the board really made much noise, so it was only Watson that Varner III needed to tie with a birdie or somehow even leapfrog with an eagle on the finishing hole.

After two shots to the front of the green and facing what would have been a tough two-putt to get into a playoff with Watson, Varner III laid down the hammer of his life and celebrated like he meant it.

Varner was so elated, he posted this on his Twitter page:

Five-time LPGA winner Danielle Kang outlasted number one women’s golfer Nellie Korda, Gabby Lopez, and Brooke Henderson, to secure her sixth Tour victory at Lake Nona Country Club. 

Teeing off on January 21, the LPGA’s season opener, the Tournament Of Champions, consisted of a mix of 50 celebrities and 29 LPGA winners over the last two years.  The tournament has quickly become a player’s and fan’s favorite to jump-start the new year.  It’s a party atmosphere, with Hall Of Famers, future Hall Of Famers, actors, musicians, and celebrities attending from multiple genres. 

The tournament had previously been held at Tranquillo Golf Club, at Four Season Resort in Orlando, Fla., and before that, at Mystic Dunes Resort, also in Orlando.  It was sponsored by Diamond Resorts International.  Now it’s sponsored by Hilton Grand Vacations Inc.  Under a two-year contract to be held at Lake Nona Country Club in Orlando.
for winner Danielle Kang—it was sweet revenge after blowing a lead in last year’s event and losing to Nellie’s big sister Jessica Korda over at Tranquillo Golf Club.

Legendary Hall Of Famer Annika Sorenstam participated as a celebrity since she’s no longer a member of the LPGA Tour.  Annika, also a resident of the Lake Nona Community, gave the fans a real treat, as she and MLB great Derek Lowe flipped flopped back and forth with the lead amongst the celebrity players.  They ended up tied for first and forced a playoff.  Derek Lowe made a long par putt on the first playoff hole to close it out and win the Celebrity version of this unique format.

After winning the Advocates Pro Golf Association (APGA) Tour Farmers Insurance Invitational on Sunday, Patrick Newcomb has decided to pass his exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour on to fellow APGA Tour player Tim O’Neal. Newcomb won the event with a birdie on the 36th hole at Torrey Pines South Course, edging out O’Neal. Following the win, social media was filled with a mixture of both congratulations and rage for the non-Black player, with many posts directly referencing the mission of the APGA Tour as posted on its website: “to bring greater diversity to the game of golf by developing African Americans and other minorities for careers in golf.”

“Comments flooded our inbox” says, publisher of the African American Golfer’s Digest, Debert Cook. “After we shared the news of Newcomb’s win on our platform, emails, texts and even phone calls to our office—and even my personal cell phone— started to arrive immediately from readers and fans.”

One texter said, “…reminds me of the same thing that happened to the National Minority Collegiate Championship (now rebranded as the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship) when white golf teams at HBCU’s started taking all of the wins.”

Another said: “What part of ‘minority’ is not understood? For DECADES, we couldn’t play in the PGA. Now that we finally have OUR tournament, ‘they’ are free to enter.”

One reader texted: “I thought that the APGA Tour was for African Americans and ‘other minorities’ so how was a caucasian able to join this tournament, much less win it?).

Another said: “Many Blacks were banned from the PGA just because we were Black, no matter how good we were.”

Another: “Why did a caucasian win? I thought that the tournament was jus for ‘us’.”

The tournament was the first APGA Tour victory at a landmark event for the APGA Tour which included the Tour’s first ever nationally televised broadcast on GOLF Channel and the largest purse ($100,000) and winner’s check ($30,000) in APGA Tour history.

The APGA is a tour that was founded to give minorities more opportunities to play professional golf, but it has not closed the door on anyone either, according to GolfDigest.com. Tour officials estimate that about 15 percent of the competitors are white, and Newcomb is one of those golfers. He qualified for the Farmers Invitational by finishing fourth on last year’s APGA money list, having started to play the tour in 2021 because it offered more events than other circuits during the pandemic.

“We are thrilled that Patrick Newcomb’s request to pass along his exemption to Tim O’Neal has been approved. Tim has been a tremendous player on our Tour since its inception and has been an incredible role model to the younger generation on our Tour today. He proved on Sunday at Torrey Pines that he still has the game to compete on PGA Tour level courses and it is exciting to see him get the opportunity at the Simmons Bank Open for the Sneaker Foundation. Patrick’s decision to pass along this exemption to his friend, Tim, is a perfect example of the inclusivity and togetherness that best represents what the APGA Tour stands for,” wrote APGA Tour CEO Ken Bentley on the organization’s Facebook page Feb. 2.

When asked about his experience in being on the APGA Tour, 31-year-old Newcomb told GolfDigest.com, “They’ve been great, open arms. They had no issues with me coming out and playing. It’s been a fantastic atmosphere. What they’re doing is great for guys to grow their game and don’t have the money to. You know, this last year I didn’t really have the money to do it, so it’s been fantastic.”

Established in 2010, the APGA Tour is a non-profit organization with the mission to prepare African Americans and other minority golfers to compete and win at the highest level of professional golf, both on tour and in the golf industry.
