2026 Masters Overview and McIlroy’s Win

The 2026 edition of The Masters Tournament was held from Thursday, April 9 through Sunday, April 12, 2026, at the iconic Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta. The tournament concluded on Sunday, April 12, when Rory McIlroy secured the victory and claimed his second Green Jacket.

McIlroyā€™s win came after a dramatic final round that showcased both resilience and championship poise. After a roller-coaster front nine, he regained control on the back nine, highlighted by a pivotal birdie at the par-5 13th hole. Despite a tense finishā€”including an errant drive on the 18thā€”he held steady to finish at 12-under par, enough to outlast a tightly packed leaderboard. The victory marked a significant milestone in McIlroyā€™s career, placing him among the rare players to win back-to-back Masters titles.

Born in Northern Ireland, McIlroy turned professional in 2007 and quickly became one of the gameā€™s brightest stars. Known for his powerful swing and competitive edge, he entered the 2026 Masters already as a four-time major champion. His continued success at Augusta reflects both his growth as a player and his ability to navigate one of golfā€™s most demanding stages.

Masters 2026 Delivers a Leaderboard Full of Drama

The 2026 edition of The Masters Tournament delivered exactly what fans have come to expect from Augustaā€”drama, shifting momentum, and a leaderboard that remained fluid until the final holes on Sunday. Played at the historic Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, the tournament once again proved why its leaderboard is one of the most closely watched in all of sports.

A Leaderboard in Motion

Throughout the week, the 2026 Masters leaderboard was anything but static. Early rounds saw a tightly packed field, with several players hovering within striking distance of the lead. By the weekend, the competition intensified, and the top of the leaderboard became a revolving door.

Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, and Cameron Young each held the lead at various points during the final round. Meanwhile, contenders like Tyrrell Hatton and Russell Henley surged into contention, adding to the tension. Even Scottie Schefflerā€”a proven Masters championā€”made a late push, reminding everyone how quickly fortunes can change at Augusta.

The back nine on Sunday, often referred to as the most dramatic stretch in golf, lived up to its reputation. Shot by shot, the leaderboard updated as players navigated Amen Corner and the closing holes. Patrons gather around these boards throughout the day, watching the tournament unfold in real time, often learning about shifts in momentum before seeing them on the course.

A Tradition Rooted in History

The history of the Masters leaderboard dates back to the tournamentā€™s earliest years in the 1930s. From the beginning, founders like Bobby Jones emphasized simplicity, elegance, and traditionā€”principles that still define Augusta National today.

Over the decades, while other tournaments embraced digital displays, the Masters preserved its manual leaderboard as a symbol of its heritage. It has become an iconic part of the fan experience, reinforcing the tournamentā€™s commitment to tradition while enhancing the drama of the competition.

The leaderboard has also been the stage for some of golfā€™s most unforgettable momentsā€”historic charges, heartbreaking collapses, and legendary victories. Names like Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Arnold Palmer have all climbed those boards on their way to Masters glory, each adding to the tournamentā€™s rich legacy.

MASTERS DAILY REPORT: Sunday, April 12

Sunday at the Masters

I reported yesterday that the final round would be a dogfight among seven playersā€”and it was, plus two I didnā€™t see coming, as Henley and Hatton made some noise as well. McIlroy, Young, and Rose each held the lead at one point, and others were quietly moving along.

As usual, you cannot count Scheffler out, as he sent notice that he wanted another green jacket. However, in the final analysis, Rory made the statement of statements with his roller-coaster play on the front nine and more confident ball striking on the back.

I donā€™t know if any of you attach any significance to the number 13, but he finally broke through on hole 13 with a birdie, taking his score to 13-under. He continued to keep everyone in suspense with his errant drive on hole 18, of all placesā€”then again, fairways in regulation have been his challenge all week. He closed the hole with a bogey and dropped to 12-under, which is the number needed to make him a back-to-back winner. He is the 90th Masters Champion.

He became only the fourth player in Masters history to go back-to-back, joining Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods. Pretty good company.

People on The Course

Makayla Clay

Makalyla is from Atlanta with family ties in Augusta. She is completing  her first year at South Carolina University. A very engaged and high energy young lady who was recruited to work at Augusta. She explained that representatives of Augusta National visited the school and presented the various opportunities. If interested, you had to apply online and if selected, take a course on Golf Tourism. Along the way, additional representatives visited the school presenting information on fashion, merchandising and other aspects of the Augusta National experience. She was selected into the program and considers this to have been a great experience. As part of the training, she and others are encouraged to take advantage of the networking opportunities in golf.

She took it seriously and had business cards printed ā€“ very savvy.

She plans to major in sports management with an emphasis on operations and logistics. Regarding her views on Augusta, she loves getting to see the people and feel the excitement.

Lloyd Christian

Lloyd is from Suwanee Ga. and is visiting Augusta for his second year. He obtained his Masters tickets from  ā€œA Friendā€. He Loves the game and would like to see more of our kids involved in the sport. He loves the fact that youth would learn courtesy, etiquette, decorum, discipline and sportsmanship. He also acknowledges that golf can be lucrative. I asked Lloyd his estimates on attendance and his responses were 30,000 total patrons and  0.5% African Americans.

Debra Graham and Michael Johnson

Debra is from Augusta and  lives in Virginia. She works for the Department of Defense. Her grandfather is Charles Graham a 93-year-old golf superintendent in Augusta. She and her family have ā€œlegacyā€ ticket status. This means her family is allotted a certain number of tickets annually.  Thanks to her familyā€™s legacy status she has been coming to the Masters for over 30 years. She has seen a lot.

I asked her about the improvements that have been made to The Patch, aka Augusta Municipal Golf Course, courtesy of Augusta National. Her concerns were that the course remains affordable, as The Patch is the place where many Black “brothers” and “sisters” play. She does not want to see it priced out of reach of those who have played it for years.

Michael Johnson

Michael is a retired educator who taught in the Columbia County school system. This is his 8th year at the Masters. He echoed Debraā€™s sentiments and, added that he would like to see more African Americans attend and participate in the Masters experience. I asked for his estimate on todayā€™s attendance and the percent he thought was African American. His response 30,000 and 2%.

Couple from Houston

This couple wished to remain anonymous and did not want a full interview. They did state that they were enjoying the tournament and had made their dent in the gift shop. They were Brooks.

The wait line was only 20 minutes today, and I am only going in to satisfy last minute requests from friends and family. No Sunday discounts at Augusta.

Its Moving Day at the Masters

On The Course at the Start

This is the day when the players are doing their best to move up the leaderboard and to be in, or near, contention on Sunday. Keep in mind, Rory McIlroy starts the day with a six-shot lead; however, golf has a way of rearing its ugly head at the most inopportune times, and the other players are not just going to hand him the title. I predict a fight and some drama. After all, this is Augusta, and it historically produces gut-wrenching drama on the weekend. Why should this weekend be any different? By the way, here is what is at stake monetarily.

Curtis and Othello

As usual, I go on my morning walkabout to get the vibe of the crowd and to make some new friends. So, I station myself at the 150 mark on hole 1 and just observe the crowd. After a while, I turn around to look in the other direction, and this young man yells out my name. Only then do I realize that I have been standing near Othello and Curtis from Omaha. It turns out they had connections for tickets and made the trip for their first visit to the Masters.

We talked about viewing and walking strategy to maximize their time at the course. I have taken the liberty of providing some background on these young men from Omahaā€”where I also live.

Curtis Marshall

Involved in a marketing company, he was Nebraskaā€™s Mr. Basketball of 1991. Curtis is the fifth-leading scorer in Class A history and was Nebraskaā€™s Gatorade Circle of Champions Player of the Year. He accepted a scholarship from North Carolina State, where he started for the Wolfpack his last three years, surpassing the 1,000-point mark and finishing in the schoolā€™s top ten in assists and three-point baskets. Curtis also played professionally in Germany.

Othello Meadows

Managing Director, Places at Blue Meridian Partners, and former President and CEO of Seventy Five North, a nonprofit organization proudly rooted in the historic Highlander neighborhood of North Omaha, one of the cityā€™s oldest communities. Since its founding in 2011, it has been dedicated to working to overcome the impacts of redlining and disinvestment. It is a member of the Purpose-Built Community Network, a national coalition of communities driving neighborhood revitalization. Warren Buffett, also an Omahan, was a major investor in this project. My understanding is that Mr. Buffett is a member of Augusta National.

Keita Cline is in financial services  from Florida and Rad Burns is a firefighter  from Bozeman, Montana. They are also first-time attendees to the Masters and was soaking it up watching players in the putting area warm up before their tee time. They also obtained tickets from ā€œA Friendā€.  I asked for their description of the course and the experience. Their responses, Surreal, Meticulous ,Traditional, Etiquette. Their advice was to take in as much as you can.

On The Course at the End of the Day

As I stated yesterday, either the field catches Rory or he comes back. Today was little of both. He shot a 1 over 73 to give his fellow competitors an opportunity. So, I am guessing that the winner will be one of these 7 players

Rory was scheduled to conduct a press conference this evening. I and others went to the interview room ready to ask a few questions only to be informed that he would not be coming. Instead,  he headed to the practice area to work on some mechanics. He is doing what he thinks needs to be done to  get ready for this dogfight tomorrow. Will it be enough? Tune in tomorrow.

MASTERS DAILY REPORT: Friday, April 10

Itā€™s Friday, and I have so many thoughts running through my mind, so today will be a series of brief descriptions of my observations on and off the course.

Many players who had high hopes will be going home or heading to the next tournament after the end of play today.

Gary Woodland

I really really, really want to see Gary Woodland do well. He is so courageous and has been through so much. My admiration for him increases with every stroke. Woodland suffers from severe anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, having endured a series of personal trials and tragedies, including a brain lesion that was affecting his mental health. Despite having the growth removed in 2023, he still feels uneasy in crowds, leading him to keep a security detail on the course since he worries that somebody might try to hurt him.

Gary Woodland

I also like Xander Schauffele, Jason Day, and Justin Rose too. I actually interviewed Jason when he was playing on the Nationwide Tour now Korn Ferry Tour in Omaha, NE.

Miscellaneous

How will Rory do today? I asked him the following question yesterday: What will you focus on tomorrow?

RORY McILROY: “Getting the ball in the fairway a little bit more different, I think would be a good thing. I’m going to be playing later in the day when the greens are at their fastest and firmest. So again, just being very aware of hole locations and making sure that I’m trying to put the ball in the right spots on the greens.”

Rory McIlroy set a record today for the largest 36-hole lead in Masters history. He shot a sizzling 65 and is 6 shots clear in the lead over Sam Burns. In one stretch he had 6 birdies in 7 holes. THE CUT

 54 players, including competitors from 15 different countries, made the 36-hole cut from a starting field of 91.      The cut fell at four-over-par 148. Notables missing the cut  including former Masters champions Bubba Watson, Mike Weir. Vjay Singh, Fred Couples, Jose Maria Olazabal and 2-time U S Open Champion, Bryson DeChambeau.

The Womenā€™s Collegiate Golf Championship Continues to Elevate Women in Golf

The 31st Annual National Womenā€™s Collegiate Golf Championship, presented by Arcis Golf and PGA TOUR Sduperstore, was held April 4ā€“6, 2026, at The Golf Club at Cinco dRanch in Katy, Texas, and concluded as a resounding success, showcasing elite competition and the continued rise of womenā€™s collegiate golf.

2nd Place, Div. I, Alabama State

Now in its 31st year, the championship has become a premier platform dedicated to providing opportunities for womenā€”particularly student-athletes from Historically Black Colleges and Universitiesā€”to compete at a high level while gaining exposure and access to professional pathways. The event continues to emphasize empowerment, inclusion, and excellence both on and off the course.

The 2026 field featured an impressive lineup of participating schools, including Howard University, Southern University, Texas Wesleyan University, Lincoln University, and Central State University, among others. The addition of first-time competitors added depth and excitement to the championship.

1st Place, Division II, Edward Waters College

In Division I, Howard University delivered a commanding performance to win the prestigious Renee Powell Cup, solidifying its position as one of the top programs in the field. Southern Universityā€™s Salma Ibrahim earned individual medalist honors in Division I, securing an exemption into the Epson Tourā€™s Hartford Healthcare Womenā€™s Championshipā€”an important step toward her professional golf aspirations.

2nd Place, Division II, Savannah State

Division II competition saw Texas Wesleyan University make an immediate impact, capturing the team title in its first appearance and claiming the inaugural LaJean Gould Cup. Lincoln Universityā€™s Kaathi Gunasegar, the returning Division II medalist, once again demonstrated her consistency and talent, earning an invitation to participate in the LPGAā€™s Chevron Championship Pro-Am.

One of the standout moments of the championship came during Round 2, when Southern Universityā€™s Chloe Ajodha recorded a hole-in-one on the 12th hole, energizing the field and spectators alike. The achievement highlighted the level of skill and excitement that defined the three-day event.

Beyond the scores, the championshipā€™s success was driven by the collective support of sponsors, volunteers, and the dedicated staff at The Golf Club at Cinco Ranch, who helped create a first-class experience for all participants. The second round of the 2026 Masters Tournament teed off on Friday, April 10, at the iconic Augusta National Golf Club, where tradition, pressure, and opportunity converge for one of golfā€™s most important days. With the cut looming, Fridayā€™s tee times carried heightened urgency as players battled to secure a spot for the weekend.

Friday Tee Times and Featured Pairings

Round 2 followed the traditional Masters format, with players who teed off late Thursday heading out early Friday, and vice versa. Tee times began in the morning around 8:00 a.m. Eastern and continued into the early afternoon.Ā 

Among the notable Friday pairings:

  • Scottie Scheffler, paired with Robert MacIntyre and Gary Woodland, teed off at approximately 10:19 a.m.
  • Rory McIlroy, the defending champion, played in the afternoon wave at 1:44 p.m. alongside Cameron Young and amateur Mason Howell

UPDATE ON THE PLAYERS IN THE FIELD

There are 108 invitees and a starting field of 91players for the 2026 Masters. There are 22 first-time players, consisting of six amateurs and 16 professionals. On the first two days of play, each amateur is paired in a group with a Masters champion. In addition, 39 Honorary Non-Participating Invitees are expected in attendance.

Cynthia and Natasha

Cynthia Austin of Aurora, Colorado, is retired from Ford Motor Company and is a member of the Greenseekers Golf Club. She and her friend Natasha Parks, who is from San Francisco, is retired from the San Francisco Fire Department and is a member of Sistas on the Links, were kind enough to spend a few moments with me. This is their first trip to the Masters. They secured their tickets through ā€œa friendā€ and had specific players they planned to watch, in addition to visiting Amen Corner.

When I asked their opinion about the state of Blacks in golf, their response was, ā€œWe were on the up, but it seems like now weā€™re stuck.ā€ I asked them to clarify, which they did by saying Tiger Woods brought much attention to the game, but since he stepped away, they donā€™t sense the same focus and attention. You be the judge.

The Greenseekers Golf Club, founded in the 1990s by a dedicated group of African American women, embodies the spirit of inclusivity and passion for the game. Established to increase opportunities for women in golf, the club has since flourished into a thriving and diverse community of golfers in Aurora, Colorado. While standing in line for my third trip to the gift shop (I will explain later), I struck up a conversation with the man in front of me after noticing the patron badge he had pinned to his cap. The badge is from 1986, the year of Jack Nicklausā€™ last win here. He told me that his grandparents had been ticket holders since 1957, and now he receives them. He went on to tell me that his grandparents are actually buried right behind Amen Corner on a parcel of land belonging to the Augusta Country Club. Now, I cannot verify his story, but I do believe him. Folks, I canā€™t make this up!!

The Adams Family

Sandra Page Adams is originally from Sandersville, GA, but moved to Augusta. She is a 1982 magna cum laude graduate of Paine College, located in Augusta, where she majored in business and accounting. She retired from the Internal Revenue Service and is enjoying life with her husband, Eric.

She and her daughter, Erica Adams, who graduated from Spelman in 2006 and is an HR/compensation executive, were just taking in the ambience, as this was their first time, as well as Sandraā€™s birthday. They received tickets from ā€œa friend.ā€

She summed up their day with a quote from Philippians 4:13, a popular Bible verse stating, ā€œI can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.ā€ You know they are also going to see Amen Corner.

Many players will need to say that  same prayer before the tournament is over.

The Gift Shop

OK, I made my third, yes, thirdā€”and hopefully lastā€”trip to the gift shop today. The good news is that it was only a 15-minute wait. The bad news is that more people in the gift shop know my name now.

Teeing up good health: Tips for preventing golf injuries

PHOENIX ā€” While sports news headlines may focus on injuries affecting professional golfers, includingĀ Achilles tendonĀ problems, back and ankle issues, most golf injuries are not sudden. They develop over time and are often preventable with proper warm-up, strength and mechanics.

As golfers head to the course, Mayo Clinic sports medicine and orthopedic experts share information about common golf injuries, how to prevent them and when to seek medical care.

“Golf may appear low impact, but the repetitive, rotational nature of the swing places stress on the spine, shoulders, hips and forearms,” says  John Tokish, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. “Over time, limited mobility, poor mechanics or lack of strength can lead to overuse injuries, especially early in the season when activity levels increase.”

Common injuries include:

  • Low back pain
  • Shoulder andĀ rotator cuffĀ injuries
  • Elbow injuries, includingĀ golferā€™s elbow
  • Wrist and forearm strain
  • Hip and ankle instability

The majority of golf-related injuries are linked to doing too much, too soon or returning to play without proper preparation, Dr. Tokish says. Three key prevention strategies:

  • Warm up before every round
    A dynamicĀ warm-upĀ prepares muscles and joints for the rotational demands of the golf swing.
  • Build strength off the course
    Resistance trainingĀ improves stability, balance and control. Strengthening the core, shoulders and lower body helps protect joints and supports a more efficient swing. Learn moreĀ here.
  • Focus on proper mechanics
    Poor mechanics can increase wear and tear over time.

Golfers experiencing persistent or otherwise concerning symptoms should consult a healthcare professional. Muscle soreness can be expected, especially early in golf season. However, certain symptoms may indicate a more serious issue:

  • Pain lasting more than a few days
  • Pain that wakes you at night
  • Pain that affects your swing or performance
  • Sharp or worsening pain with activity

Early evaluation by a sports medicine or orthopedic specialist can help prevent minor issues from becoming more serious injuries. With proper preparation, golf can remain a safe and lifelong sport for players of all ages.
